Windows Profile Question...

This week, my notebook is having an issue.
Twice, I have logged in to Windows XP PRO (SP3) and was told...

"Your profile cannot be located. A temporary profile will be used instead.
Any modifications you make to this temporary profile will be deleted upon reboot."

When I reboot Windows XP PRO (SP3), it usually finds my profile without any issues.
There are some indications via google that this may be a *new* kind of virus.
I am thinking this may be a hard drive issue.

What do you guys think ?
HJT and MBAM have done complete scans and they come up clean.
AVG IS 9.0 also comes up with a clean scan.
Any further suggestions ???

Not finding profiles on boot up should be VERY rare. If you continue to get it you've got something going on preventing it from loading the hives properly.

If this is XP please try running the following.

You may have corrupted files on your disk. Please try running the following.
First close ALL Applications as this routine will automatically restart your computer.
Click on START - RUN and copy / paste the following entry into the box and click OK
CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /F | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

Yes it is Windows XP PRO SP3.

Checkdisk ran fine.
The files are all okay.

I will continue to monitor this.
The laptop is a Lenovo R61i with a Hitachi 80 GB drive.
The drive has had its firmware upgraded in the past for Lenovo problems.

The BIOS may have some onboard drive diagnostics, if not then you might want to contact Lenovo and have them assist you in looking at it again.
As always on any system, make sure all your data is getting regular backups.

This is usually caused by registry corruption. I had it happen on our work computer a few times (XP SP3), but each time it occurred I simply rebooted and tried logging in until it didn't have the error any more. I haven't seen the error in a very long time now :) .

I ran the Lenovo Hard Drive Diagnostics and the according to the tests
the hard drive is failing random seek tests and the Extended
SMART Testing.

Looks like it is time to upgrade to a larger drive.

Thanks !

Yuck, better back up your data if you need it. I'm sorry that your drive is failing, but it's good that you found the cause.

For future reference (for anyone interested who's come across this issue) you can take a look at this article.
