Hey,

Recently my desktop has been restarting itself due to system errors (usually: Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 f769c45b, parameter3 baa30b3c, parameter4 00000000.), it happens at least once or twice a week. Everything's supposedly up to date. I've run MBAM full scans as well as Norton scans and nothing's been coming up. Just today I've noticed that Firefox is acting a bit funny--there was a random BHO installed (dealio?) which I quickly removed and deleted, so I'm suspecting that there's got to be something going on.

So, below is my HJT log, and I would really appreciate your guys' help.

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

My apologies for the delay. Do you still need help?

No problem; delay is expected, I guess. Thanks for getting back to me, though!

And, yes, I'm still having issues. The error code has shifted to 1000007e (parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 ed4df32a, parameter3 f7bb6bf8, parameter4 f7bb68f4.) and says that the system restarted to do an error caused by a device or driver. I was initially concerned that either the cpu or case fan was dying, which I read could cause such an error (and 1000008e, which I haven't gotten for a few weeks now), but I'm not sure that's the case anymore. I downloaded SpeedFan and so far temp ranges have been just fine--though the case fan rpm has so far always been zero (I just assumed it wasn't needed because temp was ~40C?). The computer seems to incur the error specifically after resuming from sleep or hibernation, when of course I can't view fan information.

I also read some solutions saying I need to look at third-party drivers, but I haven't done that yet; the process seemed a bit involved and I wasn't sure about it. I learn fast, but, it didn't seem like a good idea for me to be messing with drivers when I didn't actually know what I was doing or whether or not it was warranted. My desktop is a Gateway, and I pulled up the available driver updates posted by Gateway for my system's components. According to Windows, none of them seemed all that necessary, so I've held back with that, too.

I'll attach a new HJT log, but let me know if there's anything else you need; specific driver information and so forth (you might have to specify how to look it up if that driver info isn't accessible through properties in Device Manager, though, as that's the only route I know).

StarStrider,

Thanks for the detailed report.

I do not believe this is malware related, and I am leaning toward a hardware issue.

Run the following diagnostic tool:

Download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post both logs.

Haha, I'm not sure if that's any better.

Hopefully this isn't a failure on my part, but the link for DDS generates a page of garbled symbols and text and nothing sensible or download-able?

Hi,

Do you remember when exactly this began to occur? Perhaps after a new software or hardware installation?

Does the error message indicate any sort of driver associated with the error?

It's been happening for about a month, maybe a little longer. I don't think it coincided with any updates, at least not any that I'm aware of.

The message that comes up only says that Windows rebooted to prevent damage due to a device or driver error, and never specifies a driver or what equipment caused it. Otherwise all it gives me is error and parameter codes. (The latest, which occured this morning was: Error code 1000007e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 ec93732a, parameter3 f7bbabf8, parameter4 f7bba8f4.)

:/

P.s. (Realized I didn't answer all your questions and didn't see an edit button.)

I didn't install any software or hardware around the time it began to happen. Since it's happened (as in, last week), I've installed some software, but I doubt that has any corelation as I had already been getting the error for several weeks.

I checked the back logs on Event Viewer, and the earliest I can find (that still exist) was 11/4. Don't know if this is pertinent, but *right* before that error there was a savedump info log ("The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000007e (0xc0000005, 0x804f47a3, 0xf7bcea38, 0xf7bce734). A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini110409-01.dmp.") Is there a way to view updates that occurred that day? I didn't spot any listed in the Event Viewer (under System) near that error, in case they would be reported there.

Check System Restore for the (unlikely) possibility that there is a Restore Point from before November 4th. If there is, restore to it. If not, let me know.

I found a restore point for 11/3 and tried it, but system restore said that it was incomplete because no changes were made. I tried a point from 11/1 (the earliest accessible) and that also was incomplete because no changes were made.

Are there any on 11/4?

Yes, and choosing that also resulted in "no changes were made."

Hmm.

This may be an indication of failing RAM.

Run this memory test and see if it reports any issues:

Let's check your hard drive then.

Restart the computer, except instead of booting into Windows, boot into the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press Enter. At the command prompt, type in the following command exactly.

chkdsk /r

Let it scan (it may take a while). Afterward, enter this command which will exit the Recovery Console:

Exit

Press Enter and let your computer restart normally; let me know if you still get blue screens.

It was an adventure getting RC to work...at first it wouldn't let me access it; it wanted an administrator password but wouldn't accept anything. Then I couldn't install RC as a boot option because the cd and local setup files were older versions. Ended up slip-streaming a bootable SP3 disc in order to run it.

Anyway, I did finally run chkdsk /r, and it fixed "one or more errors." Unfortunately, none of those errors seemed to relate to my problem. Same symptoms and error messages as before...

Well if it's not RAM and not the hard drive....... hmm.

What graphics card are you using?

In addition, download and install SpeedFan. Tell me what temperatures it is reporting (take a screenshot please).

Let me know if you have any difficulties settings it up.

It's turning into a lovely puzzle, eh...

Graphics card: NVidia GeForce4 Ti 4600. Driver version 4.5.2.3 from 7/28/2003. (Has nView Desktop installed as well, if that matters.)

SpeedFan: Local is 41c, Remote 36c.
Screenshot for you.
