Greetings :)

Are you performing an upgrade or are you trying to do a clean install with a full retail disc?

Did you already try running the installer from inside Windows?

Yes, you'll need that much free space on your hard drive to install it because it backs up your current Windows installation and all the files to a folder called Windows.old on the hard drive. The upgrade installation options for Windows 7 can be found here. You can also do a clean installation, in which case it wouldn't save any of your files or programs as detailed here

Alright, hopefully you'll get it to work. If not then you might consider just doing a backup to another hard drive or some recordable DVD's and then using the Custom Installation option described in the second link which should allow you to delete the existing Windows installation which would certainly leave you with enough space.

It sounds like it doesn't have the appropriate drivers to detect your hard drive, possibly because of the SATA or IDE controller on your motherboard that your hard drive plugs into. What brand of computer do you have and did it come with Vista originally?

Can I have the model number? It's possible that you need to download a specific driver for the Windows 7 disc to be able to detect your hard drives.

If it's a laptop, likely on the bottom on a sticker. If it's a desktop, either on one of the side panels or the back.

Nope, that's not it. You can find the list of models here and see if any of them is it or you can use their auto-detection tool located where it says New users should click here. That should tell you what your model number is.
