Hijack.DisplayProperties - False Positive ???

Recommended Posts

I ran malwarebytes and received an alert:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoActiveDesktopChanges (Hijack.DisplayProperties)

I quarantined it but am not sure it is a real threat.

Before I quarantined it I ran HiJack this, below is the report along with MalwareBytes report:

Thanks for any help.

If that's the only thing that the Malwarebytes scan finds then it's nothing to worry about. All it means is that the ability to make changes to active desktop is disabled and Malwarebytes is trying to enable it again. If Malwarebytes finds this lone registry entry again you can just add it to the Malwarebytes ignore list.

I posted this same thing in the F/P forum. I got this result the first time I ran MBAM on a brand new laptop and thought it was some sort of error (the other malware programs I have on the computer don't find anything). MBAM took no action, though, so I haven't made any changes.

Hi Trueborn -

This remover is designed to remove much of the 'pre-installed' extra programs from new computers - Some come with too much extra 'pre-installed' items - This was designed by an expert here and some friends when they found bits of anti virus and bits of other usless stuff that you do not need - Use it if you think there are unrequired items already installed -

Good Luck -

I would restore it and then add it to Malwarebytes' ignore list after your next Quick Scan.

Regarding your HijackThis log, the policy of this forum is that logs can only be analyzed in the malware removal forum, not the general forums. However, as active desktop changes being disabled is a known NON-malware related issue in your version of windows, and the Malwarebytes scan did not find anything else at all, I would think it unlikely that your system is infected.

But, if you are worried that you may be infected, please print out, read and follow the directions here:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9573

Try to complete all the steps, but you can skip any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=7

If your computer is un-bootable, just post a description of the problems you are having there.

One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.

After posting your new post make sure under options that you select Track this topic and choose one of the Email options so that you're alerted when someon has replied to your post.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org
