Malwarebytes IP Test Site

That's an excellent idea, and one that I've been considering as well :).

At the moment, I simply find a known safe URL that happens to reside on a bad IP address (meaning the majority of sites on that IP or range are malicious, while the site itself is not) and use it for testing. A permanent blocked site that is safe would be much better, and more consistent for testing.

A riskier but probably more real-world test would be to deliberately go to a few malicious sites of various sorts and test it in realtime. A testing in the field, so to speak.

One would need to disable any running firewall and any webshield/surfshield/web-scanning anti-infection software while keeping one's updated resident AV running.

As a precaution one should be using a limited user account and have a recent full disk image/backup done (preferably more than one and with copies saved on disconnected drives) with the means and ability to restore it if need be.

And then jump in with your eyes closed, feet first :)

I agree, it would be useful to users who wish to make sure its running properly. And if not, the page could come up at say something like "We're sorry, but MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Protection Module is not running or working properly. You may not have the full version or you have not enabled protection. Please either enable the module, purchase Malwarebytes, or reinstall and reactivate MalwareBytes to see if this fixes the problem."

I've tested this; the page took a fairly long time to load and ended up with an "Internet Explorer cannot open this page" message with a 69.162.79.76 IP block popping up.

Is that what is supposed to happen and can it be confirmed that the IP address is correct please.

Yep, that's exactly what's supposed to happen. This IP is for testing to make sure that the IP Protection component in the Pro version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is functioning as it should be. As I said, the site itself is safe, it's simply been added to the database for testing purposes. If it was blocked by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware running in realtime, then that means it worked and MBAM did what it's supposed to do :D.

When you right-click on the red Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware tray icon next to your clock, is there a check mark next to Website Blocking? If there isn't, then check that option and to enable it to run at startup, open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and click on the Protection tab and make sure that Start malicious website blocking when protection module starts. is checked.

If none of that solves the problem then it's possible you're using some sort of proxy within your internet browser (Opera Turbo is one of these), in which case the Website Blocking component won't work with your internet browser.

If none of that explains or fixes the issue then please do the following to see if it corrects it:

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start vista-7-start.png button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks :)

A test IP has now been set up. It resides on Malwarebytes' own servers and is perfectly safe. The test address is iptest.malwarebytes.org.

Thanks everybody for the input

Hello Samuel:

I believe this deed is worthy of a separate announcement posting in the "Malwarebytes News" category and that it's assigned to IP address 69.162.79.76

Thank you for this testing procedure.

Don't know how I missed this posting but I tried it and it works (didn't work?? *grin*) as advertised - "MalwareBytes blocked this site, etc, et al."

Pleased to see this idea from last month was so promptly implemented.

Thanks!

Shy

Weird .. I am receiving this message in IE10

This page can't be displayed

and "Unable to access the network" in Chrome.

My internet connection is *working* correctly on other websites. Any ideas on what may cause this?

Thanks for all the help!
