MBAM cannot run, no solution found (HJT log included)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, I'm attempting to assist a friend with their computer troubles and almost 100% of the time I can find solutions by just searching on google. I have finally lost my nerves, and am going to turn to you well-informed individuals for a solution. My friend has a Dell Laptop that went on the fritz a couple days ago:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP 3

Dell Inspiron I6400

ATI Mobility Radeon X1300

1.00 GB of RAM

Direct X 9.0C

Virus protection: McAfee Total Protection

The laptop has been completely compromised, though most of the computer is still accessible. However, the computer is near useless. Here are some of the symptoms:

1. Internet Explorer cannot run.

2. The network connections folder is completely empty.

2. MBAM cannot be run, I receive the error 'Run-Time error '372' : vbalgrid6.ocx ... etc.' (I have already found the fix for this on the forums, but I could not fix it because of the next problem:

3. I cannot install any programs. Windows Installer is disabled and cannot be run. If I try to run windows installer I receive the error 'Could not start the Windows Installer service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

4. All fixes I have found for all the error codes I receive cannot be fixed due to the windows installer error.

I have finally resorted to getting a HJT log via a flash drive on the computer. Here is the log:

Hi,

This is no malware related issue though. You're dealing with the same as this user:

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=47876

This is caused by a faulty update by McAfee, deleting the svchost.exe, which is an important system file and when this file gets deleted, you indeed have the problems you are talking about.

Please read and follow the instructions posted here:

I thought that the website you posted had all the answers as of yesterday, but when I finally got a hold of my friends computer to fix the issue. I ran into another problem. The file sdat5959.exe is no where to be found. The link given on the leoblogger site is an invalid address and does not work. I had not luck finding any other previous sdats either from any reputable sites.

Miekiemoes, thank you so much for the link to the solution. After a great deal of frustration I finally got the svchost.exe copied and the update on McAfee fixed. The computer is FUNCTIONAL now, and I can once again use all programs including MBAM. However, I have run into one last problem.

The touch-pad mouse and keyboard are extremely laggy. I don't know if this is related to the newly copied svchost.exe or some other issue I might have run into while messing in the system32. Basically, the mouse lags for a half second before moving and is extremely spotty, and I have to type letters multiple times for them to finally work, as well as double clicking has become quintuple clicking. I apologize for speaking of MBAM unrelated issues, but I thought I'd continue in the same thread.
