Hi

I have just used Malwarebytes Anti-malware to remove the vicious Virtumonde and PrivacyRemover.m64 virusses. The Anti-malware software detected infections and removed them and, as far as I can see, they have been removed as I can now use IE and the desktop warning image has disappeared. I'd like to be 100% certain that everything has been removed. Can someone take a look at my Malwarebytes log that I saved (after the infections were removed) and also a Hijackthis log and let me know if these virusses have been fully removed?

Thanks very much for helping me with this, Jean.

Some of the files had the same file names you gave me but didn't have the .exe extension. I've copied all files with the names you've given from the paths specified even if they don't have a .exe extenson. There were 3 oembios files. One of them (a "VLC media file (.bin)" file) was about 12,000kb so I haven't included it as it's too large to upload. Please let me know if you do need it.

Hi Jean

Just to let you know, I've just had the blue screen of death, which I've been getting for about 2 months now. I'm not sure if it's caused by the virus as this is what happened every 12 minutes when the virus became obviously visible (the red desktop screensaver saying "warning!win32/adware/virtumonde ...privacyremover.64" appeared).

I've just sent a windows error report when the pc re-started and was then taken to a microsoft page with the following message

"Blue screen error caused by a device or driver
You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem. "

MBAM updates its database frequestly and the one you used yesterday was out of date by nearly 20 versions .

Thanks for letting me know. I've updated it, run a quick scan, it found 8 infections (oembios was one of them) which I've now removed. My pc has just re-started.
Here's the result of my scan. According to the report it all seems to be fine. Should I do a full scan this evening and post the results?

Please download this file:

SDFix.exe and save it to your desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its
own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe
Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should
appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press
Enter.
* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to
start the script.
* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt
you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal
process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and
load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and
also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
* Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file
Report.txt with a new HijackThis log
Reboot your system in Normal Mode. Then post the SDFix log and a new HJT log please.

I'm unable to type as the keyboard doesn't work when I go into Safe Mode/Safe Mode With Networking. This means that I'm unable to type my user id to load my settings/access pc. My mouse however still seems to work, although previously, when trying to fix virtumonde virus, it also didn't work in safe mode. I Googled this problem when I was trying to fix the virtumonde virus as many solutions required me to re-boot in safe mode, but couldn't find a solution. Can I run the download and not be in safe mode?

Safe Mode should not disable the keyboard. Set up your account without a password for now. You need to follow the instructions. The down load is NOT in safe mode, the removal is.

Nightmare. I had to use someone else's keyboard as I couldn't even type the Y. Thankfully the new keyboard worked.

I'm not seeing anything in the logs. You need to clean up temp files.

BUT since this is a malware issue, starting over is always a good plan.

You will be amazed at the amount of space on the HD you gain and probably notice improved performance.

If your not having any symptoms I think your clean.

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

Your log looks clean. We need to now reset a clean System Restore point. If you don't and you need to use System Restore you will reinfect yourself. Go to Start>Control Panel>System. Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. Then click OK.

Now go to Start>Help and Support > Undo Changes to Your System or System Restore depending on the make of your PC. Click on what ever will open the System Restore box. You will see two options, Choose Create a System Restore Point. Give it a name like Clean Restore Point and today's date. Now if you need to use it you have it.

Many of these infections can be avoided with an added layer of prevention. All recommended programs are free and easy on system resources. You should install them as part of your protection arsenal. Keep MBAM and Spybot Search & Destroy and always immunize SBS&D when you update. You will also need at least one other scanning program Asquared or SuperAntiSpyware are good and there are several other excellent programs with free and paid versions. Read the overviews of what each program below does so you have an understanding of their importance and how to use.

A firewall and antivirus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP and Vista is not sufficient.

Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.

Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I use and recommend Online Armor Free

Also the full protection of MBAM is offered at a very low price.

- that I will have everything covered with all this software (below)
- are you aware of any clashes any of these might have with my Norton Anti-Virus 360?
- that I'm not doubling up/duplicating unnecessarily

If your Norton has a firewall do not install another. CCleaner and Defrag once a month is probably good enough. You can check Windows Updates by going to the update site.
