iexplorer.exe and Rundll32 - buffer overrun detected

Hello,

I purchased this computer this past January, it has Microsoft Vista. This problem first began last night. I have Norton Anti Virus, I also tried Ad-Ware, Vundo Fix, VirtrumundoBeGone and also Spybot Search and Destroy and I am still having the same problem Any help in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated. It think it either started from Frost Wire or Veoh Video Network. I have removed Veoh Video Network and also Frostwire.

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes. Just what is the problem? Never use tools like Vundo fix and VirtrumundoBeGone without someone instructing you. I would like to see those logs please.

Please delete the version of HJT you have and get this one HiJack This! Post a log from and and tell me what your problem is.

Thank you for the warm welcome. A few days ago I downloaded Veoh Video Network and I also downloaded some video files from FrostWire. So I'm not sure where the problem occured from. But I have a strong feeling the problem is from Frost Wire. The files from frostwire were downloaded into a FrostWire folder. Everytime I click on the folder and try to click on a video, I get the buffer overrun detected error first stating that there is a problem with rundll32 and then two more pop up saying the same buffer overrun detected but with iexplorer.exe. When I click out of the error, my computer flashes and my desktop icons disappear and then suddenly repair. I then tried to move all the contents of the folder into another folder and I keep getting the same errors.

The error reads as: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library pop up alert: Buffer overrun detected! Program: C:\Windows\explorer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cant safely continue execution and must now be terminated

I have tried Adware, Norton, Vundo Fix and also VirtruMundoBeGone. I did a little research and thought I may have a vundo.trojan on my computer. I have also started my computer in safe mode and I am able to click on the same folder with out any issues. I have not tried a system restore. I have removed Veoh Network and also Frost Wire from my computer. Should I delete all of the videos that were downloaded also? I have attached all of the requested logs with the exception of VundoFix, that program showed no problems. Thank you for your help!

You have a ton of stuff running that is not needed. Also using Symantec antivirus a known resource hog. Viewpoint service is the worst thing I'm seeing, but you have TeaTimer running too.

Open SB S&D
Make sure you are in Advanced Mode. Click on the Mode link at the top of the program and then Advanced Mode.

Click on the Tools section and then Resident.
You will see two items.
1. Resident "SD helper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker.) active
2. Resident "Tea Timer" (Protection of over-all system settings.) active.

Uncheck number 2..
Leave number 1 checked always.

You can enable Tea Timer again if you wish once all special fixes have been done.

Now run a quick scan with updated MBAM post that log and a new HJT log. You can eliminate several startup processes you don't need by getting our free program StartUpLite .

Ok I followed through will all the steps above. Do you recommend I remove my Norton AntiVirus? I also have Trend-Micro should I install that in its place? Thanks for all your help! ;)

You did not follow the steps. TeaTimer is still running. You need to turn this off, it could be blocking MBAM from removing anything leftover.

No Trend-Micro is no better than Norton. Both are inferior to others such as Avira Antivir, Avast or NOD32.

Turn off TeaTimer and run an updated quick scan of MBAM and a new HJT log.

I did follow directions and I did remove the check from TeaTimer. I even restarted my computer afterwards. But even after doing so I saw that TeaTimer was still showing up on the logs. I even double checked Spybot to make sure it was unchecked and it was. I just now shut down my computer fully and checked my task manager and HighJackThis was still running. So that maybe why it was not showing an accurate reading of the logs. I skimmed through the log and I didnt see TeaTimer, hopefully these logs will suffice. Thanks!

Nope no symptoms, just the problem of everytime I click on the folder and attempt to click on any file in that particular folder I get 3 buffer overrun detected errors (as explained in my second post). I even tried to do a system restore last night to see if I can restore the computer to its original state before this bug, but it would not allow me to do so. Any suggestions? I'm trying to avoid deleting the folder and all of its contents, but it seems like I may have too. Thanks for your help....

Now let's update MBAM one more time, new version is out and do a quick scan.

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

Post the new MBAM log and a new HJT.

As for the Buffer Overrun what I find using Google is either a malware issue or a program like QuickTime, RealPlayer etc has gone corrupt. Try this use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions. It will also identify anything with a newer version and you can repair that way. Something else might be a disk error check and sfcscannow the system file checker to see if there is a corrupt file. Malware can do damage to all sorts of system files. Also you might post this issue in the general PC Help forum and it opens it up to many more with more knowledge in this area.

Ok I removed the HJT registries above, I updated Java and I also found out using Secunia Software Inspector that I needed to update Quicktime. I'm not sure if this helps but I noticed today that when I click the folder causing all the issues, and try to delete all the files, all files are removable from my laptop except one file. When I click that file I get several more buffer overrun errors and the file will not open. Initially when I open the folder about 3 errors pop up. When I click on a file that I am able to remove successfully from my laptop the error does not pop up again, the error continues to pop up when I try to access the file that I am unable to remove. I have tried to remove the file by right-click and deleting and also by dragging the item to my recycle bin, but all that comes up is a box that says removing file 0 out of 100% and it remains at 0% until I click out of it. I I believe the file may be corrupted. Thanks for your help.

Secunia didn't flag Java as outdated?

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

What is the folder? I need specific error info. Exactly what they say.

Thank you for your help, I figured out the problem. The folder and file were both corrupted. I was able to remove them using the command prompts. Thanks Again!
