Hi,

Initially, I noticed that some google search result links would take me to addresses other than what the status bar in IE 7 showed when I hovered over the link. If I clicked the same link again I would then get to the intended page. (So, it only seemed to redirect on the first click). I started trying to figure out the problem myself and quickly noticed that the Task Manager had also been disabled. I ran online scans at microsoft live onecare and trend micro's HouseCall (I had already ran my installed McAfee VirusScan Enterprise). I was seeing several threats in these scans, including keyloggers, some of which were removed and some of which couldn't be cleaned by the various tools. Throughout, the google redirections kept occurring. For example, when I tried to find Ad-Aware to download and run, I searched in google for adaware and tried to open the lavasoft link in a new tab, but what actually opened in the new tab was a site for some other adware program. When I tried the same link again though it took me to the right place. Anyway, I finally decided to try HijackThis from Trend Micro and they had a link to your forum. When I tried your pre-posting instructions it seems to have fixed all of the issues I had, including the redirections. However, I am now so overwhelmed and confused, I would still like to have an expert look at the logs to confirm whether I am really in the clear yet.

I have attached the mbam log and the panda activescan log, but I could not upload the hijackthis log so I will try a separate post.

Thanks in advance,

Ron

Hi RonN and Welcome to Malwarebytes

Please follow the directions posted in the PRE-HiJackthis forum post which includes a Spypot Search & Destroy scan and then running and posting in the given order.
Also, please do not attach the files but rather post their contents directly into your reply.

Once you're ready post the information back here and someone will be happy to assist you.

Thanks.

Hi,

Sorry I wasn't clearer in my first post. I did follow the instructions in the Pre- HJT Post Instructions forum post.

The Spybot Search & Destroy scan and removal cleaned out a lot of stuff. I then ran the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as instructed and here are the log contents:

Since I only saw tracking cookies reported by Panda, I thought maybe most of the dangerous stuff was already removed. Although I am a bit concerned that it reported my McAfee VirusScan Enterprise was not active.

Finally, I ran HijackThis, and here are the contents of its log:

Since my google search results are not being redirected anymore (yet), I am hopefull that the original malware may be gone. But my machine is slightly sluggish - especially on startup - presumably since I have several spyware protection programs running now in addition to McAfee.

Thank you so much for your help.

Sorry for the delay Ron. I think when I posted that someone would help you the others thought I was already working on your post and so did not take on your post. Give me some time and I'll review everything and get back to you soon.

Well after reviewing the logs I don't see anything currently to indicate an infection is present.

Let's do this first and then we'll do some other things later on as needed.
Please Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
 • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
 • While connected to the Internet, Click on the green CleanUp! button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.
 • It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.
 • DO NOT allow it to reboot your system when asked.
 • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
 • Close OTMoveIt2

NOW please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process and post back the details you copied from OTMoveIt2
So, if my system appears to be clean for now, should I keep Ad-Aware, Spydoctor Starter Edition, and Spybot Search & Destroy all active. Do their benefits add, or is there a diminishing return - if so, which would you recommend keeping and which would you uninstall?

Thanks a lot for your help & advice. It's so frustrating how much effort goes to waste dealing with all this malware.

I would at least disable them from starting every time the system boots. They have some tools to stop home page changes, etc but for the most part without a paid version they don't do too much. Please review the information below and the product suggestions which may prove to keep your system a bit safer.

Review each of the 04 Items in the HJT log and do some research with Google to see if you need them to start with Windows each time, generally speaking most are not needed.
At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
 • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
 • Click Properties.
 • Click the System Restore tab.
 • Check Turn off System Restore.
 • Click Apply, and then click OK.
 • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
 • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
 • Click Properties.
 • Click the System Restore tab.
 • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
 • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster.
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
You can find a tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/...p2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I recommend Online Armor Free

A little outdated but good reading on how to prevent Malware

Keep safe online and happy surfing.
