Original post @ link above. I'm making progress but I'm certainly not clean yet. Infected machine still not able to navigate to this forum. Page comes up in asian text and pop-ups start BIG TIME. I have now managed to get MWB to install and run. After that I was able to get SpybotS&D to update and run. So...I have two MWB logs to post. The first is from the run before Spybot was able to run, the second is from a run after. The next step suggested was a PandaActive Scan. I was not able to access their site before but will be trying again directly. My "friend" Antivirus 2009 is still active after all this. If I can't get to Panda on the infected machine, will a HJT log still be helpful?
Thanks very much in advance.

Who does this machine belong to? Are you running a repair shop? You have already said you don't own the machine.
That is not a full HJT log. Update MBAM quick scan again, post that log, and the full HJT log.

The affected machine belongs to a young lady who works for me. No, I am by no means running a repair shop. I do, however, occaisionally agree to take friends or employees computers here to my home and attempt to clean them up. This is probably the 6th such one I've done...all on a "volunteer" basis. Sound familiar?
This is the first one which gave me such a hard time so I came to you folks for expertise far beyond my own. Sorry for the incomplete HJT log. I don't know how I managed that. Below please find the complete logs as requested. MWB says nothing infected now. Spybot still found 2 non-cookie related issues:
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled: [SBI $2E20C9A9] Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc\Start

Yes it sounds familiar, and one of the clues of something to hide is an edited log, we see shop owners trying to make $ off our free help. I had to ask.
The first item SBS&D found is not malware, it's alerting that the security center is turned off. Not a bad idea to have it on, it does use resources but will alert to the AV being outdated if it is one MS recognizes. If not it's useless for the most.
The second, would most likely be removed by MBAM, if you follow my instructions to update it and scan again. The last log indicated a reboot to delete, you must do that. Please only run scans requested. You can cause the malware to mutate to a whole new mess, tampering before we have it removed.
Update MBAM, quick scan, post that log and a new HJT log please.

Jack, I have just been given info about this machine that seems to be a bit contradictory to your story. Seems this is usually used to process credit cards? If that's the case you need to reformat period no further discussion. Your putting lots of people at risk here. It has P2P software on it against our policiy.

Jean,
To be perfectly honest, I can't say for sure where this machine originated. I do know who uses it now and don't believe there is any way she is scanning any credit cards. I can talk to her today at work and ask who gave her the computer. She did say that it had been given to her within the last few months. As convenient as it sounds, I know for a fact she is just a young, recently single mom of two youngsters who probably got it from someone associated with her church.

I'm not clear on how this entry could be putting people at risk. Can you explain any further or advise on how to eliminate that risk? I assure you I have no bad intentions and I certainly believe that the owner doesn't either.

The trace needs to be removed with HJT. If the machine was still being used for a business and gathering credit card info it is all compromised. Consider all info on the machine compromised. If she did online banking etc, those places need to be notified and passwords changed.
P2P programs and the downloading of illegal files with those programs is most likely how she got infected.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares ultra] "C:\Program Files\Ares Ultra\Ares Ultra.exe" -h <======= That is a P2P program. Ares, uninstall it.
Her java is out dated and exploitable and so is the Adobe reader.
You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.
Your running an outdated and unsafe version of Adobe Acrobat Reader latest version. Or get the alternative faster lighter on resources Foxit PDF Reader and Editor Look at the Downloads tab here or Downloads if you don't want to see the features etc.
Is the machine running ok now?

Yes, the machine seems to be running well. I will follow the instructions re. the updates to her software tonight when I get home. I had recognized Ares as a p2p program and uninstalled it through add/remove in control panel. I don't think it shows up there anymore, but I see there is still an entry for it in the HJT log. Can I use HJT to get rid of it as well? I'm quite sure the p2p file sharing is how this all started. I uninstalled two other similar programs as soon as I got into the machine. Thanks again and I will let you know when your instructions have been completed. That'll be tonight after I take care of this annoying day job.

I think I've got it all done...you tell me. MWB was updated again tonight and was clean. Sorry this has been so tough to get to this point.

OK, looking good. Few things to clean up. Run HJT again in scan only put a check next to the lines below and then click fix.

Reboot and update MBAM scan a quick one, if its clean, move onto the next steps.
You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.
Windows needs updated to SP3
Your log looks clean. We need to now reset a clean System Restore point. If you don't and you need to use System Restore you will reinfect yourself. Go to Start>Control Panel>System. Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. Then click OK.
Now go to Start>Help and Support > Undo Changes to Your System or System Restore depending on the make of your PC. Click on what ever will open the System Restore box. You will see two options, Choose Create a System Restore Point. Give it a name like Clean Restore Point and today's date. Now if you need to use it you have it.
Many infections can be avoided with an added layer of prevention. All recommended programs are free and easy on system resources. You should install them as part of your protection arsenal. Keep MBAM and Spybot Search & Destroy and always immunize SBS&D when you update. You will also need at least one other scanning program Asquared or SuperAntiSpyware are good and there are several other excellent programs with free and paid versions. Read the overviews of what each program below does so you have an understanding of their importance and how to use.
A firewall and antivirus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP and Vista is not sufficient.
Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.
Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I use and recommend Online Armor Free
Also the full protection of MBAM is offered at a very low price, from the link in my signature.
