[clueless]

I had a virus- turned out to be antivirus pro 2009 and finally found MBAM which took care of it- it thought.

I was advised in another thread to post certin logs-

You didn't run a Panda virus scan. That scan is for disk fragmentation. You must turn off Tea Timer in SpyBot Search & Destroy.

Open SB S&D
Make sure you are in Advanced Mode. Click on the Mode link at the top of the program and then Advanced Mode.

Click on the Tools section and then Resident.
You will see two items.
1. Resident "SD helper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker.) active
2. Resident "Tea Timer" (Protection of over-all system settings.) active.

Uncheck number 2..
Leave number 1 checked always.

You can enable Tea Timer again if you wish once all special fixes have been done.

Run HJT in scan only and remove this line by checking next to it and then click fix.

You have a critically outdated Adobe Reader.

Your running an outdated and unsafe version of Adobe Acrobat Reader latest version. Or get the alternative faster lighter on resources Foxit PDF Reader and Editor Look at the Downloads tab here or Downloads if you don't want to see the features etc.


You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

I would remove the adware program ViewPoint also from Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

AVG is soon not going to support the version your using, you need to get something that will keep updating. There are many good free programs.

Once you have turned off TeaTimer and fixed the HJT entry. Reboot, install the needed updates to Adobe and Java. Update MBAM scan again. If there are no items found great, if there are I need to see a new HJT log too.

Here is the HTJ log but first I would like to ask which program/programs do you recommend to replace AVG?

- not complicate things but in reviewing what happend when I was trying to disinfect the virus, a couple of .dll files got "changed". If that matters I can list those for you.

I recommend Avira. I use it and it's free. Runs very well with MBAM http://www.free-av.de/en/index.html

Did you update MBAM and scan? You didn't uninstall Viewpoint or update your Adobe and Java.

Please update MBAM run a quick scan post that log and a new HJT log.

Oh dear I'm becoming more clueless. Are you running Symantec Antivirus and AVG? I totally missed that before in your HJT log. You need to choose one and in all honesty I wouldn't choose either I would go with Avira. But you can't run two active antivirus.

Symantec is Norton right? That has been deleted for a year or so and to my knowledge is not active.

AVG -both antivirus and antispyware were running at the time of the infection and I think that windows defender was running.

Since I installed the other three products I have cut off the active scan for AVG antispyware- I think.

Yes Symantec it Norton, but it's a messy program and leaves crap even after install. You have an active service running from it and it needs to be shut down.

Last questions- I have MBAM running. I am downloading Avira as I type. Do I delete the AVG? If so both the antivirus and anti-sypware?

I'm glad we got it fixed up for you. You uninstall. Not delete. I'm not a fan of either AVG program anymore, they basically ruined a good program with junk. If you like the antispyware keep it. I think it's still supported. You should not use HJT unless someone is helping you. It is not a scanner to find malware on its own. It shows parts of the system that malware likes to go to. Deleting the wrong things can ruin your system. This stuff below needs to be done, resetting the System Restore needs resetting. The rest is a good selection of free protections and you should install them for a good layered protection.


We need to now reset a clean System Restore point. If you don't and you need to use System Restore you will reinfect yourself. Go to Start>Control Panel>System. Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. Then click OK.

Now go to Start>Help and Support > Undo Changes to Your System or System Restore depending on the make of your PC. Click on what ever will open the System Restore box. You will see two options, Choose Create a System Restore Point. Give it a name like Clean Restore Point and today's date. Now if you need to use it you have it.

Many infections can be avoided with an added layer of prevention. All recommended programs are free and easy on system resources. You should install them as part of your protection arsenal. Keep MBAM and Spybot Search & Destroy and always immunize SBS&D when you update. You will also need at least one other scanning program Asquared or SuperAntiSpyware are good and there are several other excellent programs with free and paid versions. Read the overviews of what each program below does so you have an understanding of their importance and how to use.

A firewall and antivirus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP and Vista is not sufficient.

Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.

Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.
