Hello, I'm trying to help a friend with a laptop running XP for home. After booting up all of the folders on the desktop have been moved to another location and the files within have been moved as well to another location other than the original folder.

A system restore was ran from when a known date when everything was running correctly but it did not correct the problem.

The Malwarebytes program was installed and ran and successfully deteceted three bugs and removed them. There were no bugs titled desktop.exe after the scan was run. After a reboot, the files/folders were still in the wrong locations. Hijackthis was installed and ran and I am showing the log file here.

I also had them update their Norton Anti-Virus which had expired and then a new scan with updates was ran.

Just wondering if anything is wrong with the registry now. Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

Hello.

Your logs don't tell us about the condition of your registry.

Have you been able to do a search on the files missing and locate them?

Can you be more specific about which folder disappeared, when and possibly some of it's contents? filenames and the like are fine. I need no further details then that.

Yes, after doing a search the folders and files were located, both in different locations. I will have to get more information from the owner before I can tell you exactly where they were found. The folders were all located in the MY DOCUMENTS folder from MY COMPUTER with all of the shortcuts being on the desktop. She did a search and found both folders and files in different locations. I'm not sure if a virus or malware caused this but I had her do a hijack log and posted it here. Please let me know if I need to do anything further.

Without more information, I could only speculate as to what might have happened.
The hijackthislog in this case doesn't provide any clues.
