Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) software is the premier platform for rapidly developing and deploying secure, portable applications that run on server and desktop systems spanning most operating systems. J2SE 6.0 is a significant release including many new features and updates while preserving compatibility and stability. The development of J2SE 6.0 was led by Sun and progressed following the Java Community Process (JCP) to include input from a variety of constituents.
Java allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. These applications, written in the Java programming language and access from your browse, are called "applets". Corporations also use Java applets for intranet applications and other e-business solutions.

Java technology was created as a computer programming tool in a small, secret effort called "the Green Project" at Sun Microsystems in 1991. As it turns out, the Internet was ready for Java technology, and just in time for its initial public introduction in 1995, the team was able to announce that the Netscape Navigator Internet browser would incorporate Java technology.
Now, the Java platform has attracted over 5 million software developers, worldwide use in every major industry segment, and a presence in a wide range of devices, computers, and networks of any programming technology. Today, you can find Java technology in networks and devices that range from the Internet and scientific supercomputers to laptops and cell phones, from Wall Street market simulators to home game players and credit cards -- just about everywhere. The best way to preview these applications is to explore java.com, the ultimate marketplace, showcase, and central information resource for businesses, consumers, and software developers who use Java technology.

Key features:
• Write software on one platform and run it on practically any other platform
• Create programs to run within a web browser and web services
• Develop server-side applications for online forums, stores, polls, HTML forms processing, and more
• Combine Java technology-based applications or services to create highly customized applications or services
• Write powerful and efficient applications for mobile phones, remote processors, low-cost consumer products, and practically any device with a digital heartbeat

Oracle to ship 40 security fixes for Java SE

Oracle has pledged to improve Java's security features in the wake of high-profile vulnerabilities

IDG News Service - Oracle is set to release a patch set for Java SE that targets 40 security vulnerabilities.

Thirty-seven of the weaknesses can be exploited over a network without requiring an attacker to have a username or password, Oracle said.

Affected products covered in the patch batch, which is set for release Tuesday, include Java SE as well as a number of versions of JDK (Java Development Kit), JRE (Java Runtime Environment) and the JavaFX rich-client development platform, according to Oracle's announcement.

Oracle is recommending that customers apply the patches as soon as possible "due to the threat posed by a successful attack."
The Java SE patch set comes after Oracle released some 128 fixes for its database, middleware and applications in April.

Oracle came under fire in recent months over Java security after a spate of high-profile vulnerabilities.

The company subsequently pledged it would work to shore up Java's security measures, as well as do more outreach with community members.

Oracle revealed some specifics of its planned security improvements last month.

===============================================================================================

( Java SE 6u51 (N/A) / Java SE 6u45 End of Public Updates )

Where can I get the latest version of Java 6?

We highly recommend downloading and installing Java 7. The latest release for Java contains many new features, performance enhancements, and bug fixes to improve the running of Java applets or applications.

REPEAT: Java SE 6 End of Public Updates

Oracle no longer posts updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. All Java 6 releases up to and including 6u45 have been moved to the Java Archive on the Oracle Technology Network, where they will remain available but not receive further updates. Oracle recommends that users migrate to Java 7 in order to continue receiving public updates and security enhancements.

Critical Update Plugs 40 Security Holes in Java

Oracle today (6/18/2013) released a critical patch update for its Java software that fixes at least 40 security vulnerabilities in this widely deployed program and browser plugin. Updates are available for Java 7 on both Mac and Windows.

The latest patch brings Java 7 to Update 25 (looks like Oracle has finally followed through on its promise to stop shipping updates for Java 6). In its accompanying advisory, Oracle notes that 37 of the 40 vulnerabilities fixed in this update may be remotely exploitable without authentication — that is, they can be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password.

If you really need and use Java for specific Web sites or applications, take a few minutes to update this software. Updates are available from Java.com or via the Java Control Panel. Keep in mind that updating via the control panel will auto-select the installation of the Ask Toolbar, so de-select that if you don’t want the added crapware.
