Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc on your computer, and open up the HOSTS file in Notepad. Here is what it should say:

127.0.0.1 localhost

If it has more in it than that, you will want to delete all of the extra stuff.

If it tells you the file is read only, then close Notepad, right-click on the file, select 'Properties' from the bottom of the list, uncheck the "Read Only" box at the bottom of the window that popped up, and click OK. Once you do that you will be able to edit the HOSTS file.

If that does not work, then other fixes are available.

Can you get online and follow the directions below from another PC?
save file to cd and then unzip to system that can't get online.

Download the HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager.

• Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
  
• Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  
• Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  
• Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
  
• Click the X to exit the program.
  
• Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
