Hi, I like Malwarebytes and I have some questions and suggestions.
1. How come the protection module only finds malware running in the background and doesn't notice if I open/download a virus?
2. I have a collection of malware (mostly viruses and spyware) that Malwarebytes does not and cannot detect and I would like to contribute them so that Malwarebytes can be better. Where/how can I give this?

Also, Do you have any ideas for additional antiviruses or firewalls for my new uninfected computer?

We are only adding definitions to current malware and we define that as malware that a user can become infected with with normal computer use . We are not padding our definitions with obsolete info based on samples that died many years ago .

We work hard to keep MBAM strong against current malware and give priority to the malware that antivirus software is failing on .

MBAM is not antivirus software and is designed to compensate for the problems we see with typical antivirus software .

If you have samples that have a live URL to go along with them please PM me and we can work out a way for you to help .

If you have a malware archive I will be up front and tell you now that there is no way I will be taking time away from current malware research to investigate malware that might have lost its source years ago .

Greetings, I don't like da virus either (heh heh). Anyways, if you're looking for a good AV to go with MBAM, I recommend Avira (free), and if you are going to use a paid AV, I'd recommend Kaspersky or NOD32. As far as why MBAM doesn't detect a virus or executable when it's downloaded instead of when it's executed is because in realtime MBAM isn't a file scanner, as nosirrah stated, it looks for threats that are active on your system. If it did scan all files as they were downloaded, it would probably slow a system considerably as this is exactly how %99 of anti-viruses work in realtime, they scan files as they are downloaded, on execution and on access, so having 2 programs do that at once could create conflicts between the 2 as well as seriously slow system performance. In addition to an AV and MBAM, I also recommend using a hosts file to block malicious sites. You can use one like HPHosts or just use a tool like HostsMan. I also recommend installing Spybot Search & Destroy and using it's immunize feature as well as SpywareBlaster as they don't run in the background and will block bad sites and downloads passively by using your hosts file and restricted zones in IE and FireFox. As for a firewall, Comodo is excellent and if you're on Vista, Vista Firewall Control by Sphinx Software is good and light on resources. But of course, your best protection is your mind. Practice safe browsing habits and don't download warez or other files illegally using filesharing programs etc. And avoid sites like Facebook and Myspace as they are often compromised.

The paid edition will provide you with a real time protection from malware, as far as antivirus goes just like listed above you should run something else. I personally like AVG Internet Security. But as you know theres alot more out there. I can tell you this, I run both malwarebytes and AVG with no problems at all. Make sure to keep up on the updates of the free edition of malwarebytes as it will not auto download and install them, along with your OS. Unpatched exploits in the OS can leave a system with even the best AV on it still have vulnerabilities in security. Along with browser updates too.
