just to preface this post: im running windows XP, sp 2, AMD Turion 64 CPU, 789MHz

i have an instance of malware on my pc that i think i picked up at the computer lab at my school (their virus potection is stinky). the malware file is called m.exe and comes with an autorun.inf file that claims to be created by skype ltd (everything in the properties looks legit), but every removable drive that gets connected to the computer becomes infected and won't open correctly. not only that, but when you connect it to another comp, IT gets infected too! :) the files (m.exe and autorun.inf) are hidden, and every time they get deleted, they return within seconds. :) after hunting around, i found some other files that also claim to be created by skype hanging around in the C:\WINDOWS folder...I was able to delete these files, but...

after running malware bytes anti spyware and rogue remover, i assumed my problem was fixed...but i checked the quarantine, and nothing about these files appeared in the scan. after using the file assassin tool about 5 times (the files kept coming back) on each of the files (thats on 2 jump drives), i went to open one of the drives and lo and behold...the files are back. i ran the scan once more, but it still didnt find anything malicious. for one of the drives, double-clicking brings up my docs, not the jump drive! but, i dont even know when i picked this up - i def. didnt want it, and still dont want it. any suggestions on how to remove this booger?

btw, linux's ubuntu 8.1 (thats what im running on my other comp) can clean the removable drives effectively, but as soon as i connect it to my PC or laptop, they become re-infected. :)

id gladly appreciate any help with blitzing this bug...

i'd love to post those logs, and also to use the hijackthis program, but none of my infected comps can access the program, nor can it even access the proper forum for this...i can't figure it out - unless this bug knows im trying to get rid of it... :) so i've attached my scan logs...

enclosed are the logs from mbam and panda, but this particular problem i have apparently is detecting HijackThis, disabling access to it, and even the forum (i had to access someone else's post with a site search, then click add new topic), and any time i tried to access the forum OR the program, my browser completely shut down (both firefox and IE). so enclosed are the best i could do: mbam and panda. if you need something else, please let me know. i posted earlier in the week for help, and was instructed to do the scans and such, so here's the link if you need specific info regarding my problem: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.p...amp;#entry44523
thanks in advance

Did you have the AV remove what it found?

If the PC can't get on the Internet then copy this stuff to a CD and take to the infected PC.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

* Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
* Double-click on the My Computer icon.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* After the new window appears select the View tab.
* Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
* Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
* Press the Apply button and then the OK button and exit My Computer.
* Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
• Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup215.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts
Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    Posted Image
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Then see if MBAM will install and run.

Then after you've done this come back and give me a status update please.

i kinda had to sneak around behind the bug to use HijackThis (use another comp, then try to open, reboot, etc.) but these programs seemed to have worked - my usb drive now opens correctly, dr. web doesn't find anything, nor does mbam...im still uploading logs, though. i did notice, however, that one of the questionable files is still urking in the c:\WINDOWS folder. should i try to delete it? also, if you need the dr. web log, let me know...thanks for the help thus far!!

one more thing - 1 out of 2 of the original programs were deleted (autorun.inf), but 'm.exe' is still on the usb drive and hidden...just thought i'd throw that out there, too...

    • Click Update
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then RESTART the computer and run HJT Scan and Save log.

Please do not scan different computers and post logs of them in the same post.
If you have another computer to scan then let's finish one first THEN start on the other in another post.

For now please redo the scans for the computer we were originally working on.

Please reboot the computer and then run the following again.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab

Then RESTART the computer again and AFTER the reboot run HJT Scan and Save log

Post back NEW MBAM and HJT logs please.

Close ALL open browsers and chat programs
Then start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZCxdm768YYUS
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

How is the system running now? Are there still any signs of an infection?

I would highly suggest you update your Windows Service Pack to level 3 and take a look at the following.

I'll close this post now since you appear to be clean, and leave you with some information to hopefully help you stay safe.
Also take a look at this posting here
At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install hpHosts
Download it from here
hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,
tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites
by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.
hpHosts Support Forum

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
I recommend Online Armor Free

A little outdated but good reading on how to prevent Malware

Keep safe online and happy surfing.
