Error message pops up at the very end of the install process - Error Code 718 (-2146893798, 0). I rebooted and got same error message when trying to open the program.

Uninstalled via Add-Remove programs, rebooted and ran the mbam-cleanup tool - rebooted - then tried to install again with another download of mbam-setup - same result.
This was with v1.31, had same result with v1.32. Same result also in safe mode.

Normal precautions taken before install - clear temp folders, turn off all active security programs, am using an Administrator account, etc.

This computer has no infection of which I am aware.

Computer info: Win XP SP3
Active "security" software:
AVG Anti Virus v8
Zone Alarm Firewall v5.5.
Windows Defender
Sandboxie
(all disabled during installs)

I am convinced that the problem is something on this particular computer, and so far I haven't been smart enough to figure it out. But I am smart enough to know when to ask for help - and any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Error 718 means, "Could not load the MD5 hash generator."

I'm not really sure what could be causing it. I'll have to ask Marcin, if he ever gets done doing whatever he's doing...

Due to the many different computer configurations around, and the various obscure problems contained in many of them, this might be one of those issues that is both rare and difficult to reproduce for testing purposes.
No problem.
My thanks to anyone who looked at this and tried to come up with a solution.

I would like to make it clear that I got a very rapid response from Malwarebytes' Support.

An email from Marcin was sent me shortly after my original post here in the forum.

My email provider - in it's infinite wisdom - routed that email to the spam folder. There it sat for several days until I noticed it.

These are the steps suggested by Malwarebytes Support along with what worked on this particular computer:

1. Uninstall/reinstall mbam according to these instructions:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7038

2. Make sure you have the latest Windows updates. "This error is known to happen on Windows 2000 when it does not have the latest patches from Microsoft installed.
You may need to reinstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware after updating your system."

3. "If your computer is running Windows XP then the Cryptographic service needs to be repaired. There is a special tool that is capable of doing this called Dial-a-Fix:
http://djlizard.net.nyud.net:8080/software...-v0.60.0.24.zip
Remember, that is only if you are on Windows XP."

I ran the Dial-a-Fix tool as suggested. The only area I had it check was the "Fix SSL/HTTPS/Cryptsvc" section.
This solved the problem, mbam then installed successfully and is now scanning the computer.

"Well Done" to the Support Team.
