Hi,

I've had this seneka malware for at least a week, with all the anti-virus sites redirected to 127.0.0.1 and frequent popups out of nowhere. I have tried Spybot, MBAM, Trojan Remover (TR), and SUPERAntiSpyware. Both (only) MBAM and TR would find/remove those seneka's but upon reboot, the seneka's would come back. Taking the cues from this forum, I tried ComboFix, running it twice in normal mode - I started it the first time and it ran on its own after reboot. Now it seems the bad guys are gone but I'm not sure. Can you please check my log and see if it's clean? Thanks much in advance!!!

By the way, do I need to worry about my passwords considering I had those malware such as vundo and seneka? I noticed the last time my McAfee was updated was Dec. 18, 2008. And my credit card was rejected twice a few days back, although we are able to use it with another computer and we have not found any unauthorized use of the card. Thanks much in advance!!

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

• Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  
• DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows
  
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    
  • Select the Update tab
    
  • Click Update - (Don't forget to UPDATE!!)
• When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  
• Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then RESTART the computer and AFTER the reboot run HJT Do a system scan and save a logfile
The post back NEW MBAM and HJT logs in that order please.

I notice that you have eREAD6.0 Chinese text-to speech software installed, so I'm assuming you installed it and either speak Chinese or visit Chinese sites so wanted to make sure you installed this or are at least aware of it.

I have no idea if it's good or bad but it wasn't flagged by the Anti-Malware software

No. The system seems to be working fine.

You are right I visit some of the Chinese sites but am not sure when I got eREAD. I'm not using it so I have uninstalled it.

By the way, can I "fix" this sohutv_web and the items flagged as "missing" using HijackThis? None of those are needed.

Yes you can stop them from auto starting with HJT but best to see if there is an ADD/REMOVE for the program and if not then remove with HJT then restart the computer and browse to that folder and delete the folder and all contents.

Then to be on the safe side maybe tomorrow run new MBAM, HJT scans and I'll review them one more time for you.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  
• Click Properties.
  
• Click the System Restore tab.
  
• Check Turn off System Restore.
  
• Click Apply, and then click OK.
  
• Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  
• Click Properties.
  
• Click the System Restore tab.
  
• UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
