This one appears to be modifying itself on the fly and will require a custom script to capture it.
I will try to provide you with one later tonight or tomorrow.

DO NOT use this computer for any type of Banking or systems that require you to use a password.
This appears to possibly be a back door Trojan.

This is the typical CANNED MESSAGE that is often given.
One or more of the identified infections is related to a nasty rootkit component which is difficult to remove. Rootkits and backdoor Trojans are very dangerous because they use advanced techniques (backdoors) as a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information which they send back to the hacker. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans and rootkits as part of an exploit to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge.

If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums from a CLEAN COMPUTER. You should consider them to be compromised. You should change each password by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control before connecting again. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Because your computer was compromised please read How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Although the rootkit has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because this malware has been removed the computer is now secure. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, delete the partition, reformat and reinstall the OS.

Please read:

Should you decide not to follow this advice, we will do our best to help clean the computer of any infections but we cannot guarantee it to be trustworthy or that the removal will be successful. If you wish to proceed, disinfection will require more time and more advanced tools.

Please let us know how you would like to proceed.
Ok i think thats all well and good, we have a spare computer that we use and can access the internet(i'm on it right now).

What i would like to do if its ok, is to make sure the spare computer(which i am on right now) is clean.

If it is infact clean then i am good to go for changing my personal passwords on it.

Here is my current HIJACKTHIS log on "THe Changer"(The computer i'm using for the changes).

Please let me know if i'm clean on it so i can go and change personal information on banks and other institutions.

thanks.

First let me say thanks for all your help so far, i know often times people are impatient in getting there computers free of virus' and other things.

With that being said I would appreciate a response tonight(its 10:00PM here, i'm going to bed in less than an hour). I mainly say this because if i do need to change my passwords and stuff i need to do it tonight to give this hacker less time to get into my information.

I have to work tomorrow and wont be back home till around 6:00PM so I think waiting that long could cause a problem..

So please let me know if the system i'm on right now is clean(the logs are posted above this one), so i can move forward with changing the important passwords.

Thanks,

Andrew

NO, DO NOT change passwords with this computer either. It is infected as well, not the same stuff but it's infected.

We need to clean one computer at at time though.

Ok so lets clean up "The Cleaner First"

The second computer that I posted....I feel that the other one is unstable to use and thus i'm not using it(probally gonna choose to reformat the hard-drive on it).

Lets work on getting the second computer taken care of.

Then once the second computer(the cleaner) has been taken care of, i can change my personal information on it...then i'll worry about the first computer(the infected).

THanks for your timely responce.

I will wait patiently for your best measured approach on how to clean off the second computer...

THanks once again for all your help and time and effort.

God Bless,

Andrew

Well I don't think you're working on the same computer now. This log no longer shows the driver file that was there in the first log.

You need to make sure you're working on the SAME computer you originally posted about and clean that one up first.

Please make sure you do exactly as shown in the steps for the original computer and send back that GMER file.
Unless you've run some other scan or tool which I've asked you not to do, that file should still be there.

The second computer you posted about does not have this infection and I don't need or want any files from it for now, we'll tackle that one next when the first one is done.

Ok there seems to be a mis-understanding....

You told me that the first computer needed to be reformatted...therefore it has been sitting un-used for a long time now...i haven't even touched it.

The last logs i posted were from the second computer, and i figured we could fix that one first because the most important thing i need to do is change my personal information.

if i can't clean the second computer then i can't change my personal information.

So please ignore the first computer's information(files and logs etc) because I will format the HD and re-install..

Lets focus on what we can fix....and that is the second computer..

because if i can't get it fixed then all my online passwords may be in someone elses possession and to me that seems like the most dangerous part..

I want to fix the most dangerous part first(which is changing my passwords on banking accts and stuff). To do that I need a clean PC to do it from...and since the first computer needs to be reformated, i want to fix the second computer.

Thanks,

Andrew
I'm okay with that just want to make sure as I thought you indicated you did want to fix the first one. No issue.

Per your request we will no longer worry or work on the original computer and you will FDISK, FORMAT, and re-install Windows on that computer.
I'll pretend you never posted about it B)
LimeWire is a peer-to-peer file sharing program, which is reported bundled with malicious software that may make changes on your computer.
You should use the Add or Remove programs to remove it.

For now follow below and update your current AVG Anti-Virus software.
When done with this you may want to consider replacing it with this: Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus

Close ALL open browsers and chat programs
Then start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
  • O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpF879.tmp (file missing)

Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

Then run the following
You will want to print out or copy these instructions to Notepad for Safe Mode/offline reference!
These steps are for member DrewStar only. If you are a lurker, do NOT try this on your system!
If you are not DrewStar and have a similar problem, do NOT post here; start your own topic

Do not run or start any other programs while these utilities and tools are in use!
Posted Image Do NOT run any other tools on your own or do any fixes other than what is listed here.
If you have questions, please ask before you do something on your own.
But it is important that you get going on these following steps.

STEP01
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

* Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
* Double-click on the My Computer icon.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* After the new window appears select the View tab.
* Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
* Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
* Press the Apply button and then the OK button and exit My Computer.
* Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

STEP02
    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup215.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts

STEP03
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
This should apply to AVG8:
To disable the Resident Shield, please:
open AVG User Interface
double-click on the Resident Shield
un-tick the option Resident Shield active
save the changes.

STEP04
Please download and run the following file to repair file and registry permissions
fixacl.exe

STEP05
  • Download FixPolicies.exe by Bill Castner and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on FixPolicies.exe to run it.
  • Click on Install. It will create a folder named FixPolicies on your desktop.
  • Open the FixPolicies folder.
  • Double click on Fix_policies.cmd to run it. Command Prompt will open and close quickly this is normal.
  • Reboot your computer after it runs
  • This fix may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes at your next startup. You can safely run the utility again.
  • Note: some malware will block the running of this tool. So if you cannot run Fixpolicies, then, RENAME the EXE file to something like Mytool.exe and then run it.

STEP06
Download this INF repair file by MS-MVP Miekiemoes: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/tools/VArestorepolicies.zip
Unzip the download. Open the folder VArestorepolicies and Right-click the file inside, VArestorepolicies.INF and choose Install

STEP07
Posted ImageIf you have a prior copy of Combofix, delete it now !

Download ComboFix from one of these locations, saving to DESKTOP:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
If your I.E. browser shows a warning message at the top, do a Right-Click on the bar and select Download, saving it to the Desktop.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • If and only if you are prompted to download a new version of Combofix, reply NO .

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Please watch Combofix as it runs, as you may see messages which require your response, or the pressing of OK button.

IF you should see a message like this:
Posted Image
then, be sure to write down fully and also copy that into your next reply here and then await for my response.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
-------------------------------------------------------

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light.
If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

STEP08
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from one of these 3 locations
1 http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds
2 http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
3 http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

Disable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.
Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS.txt will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Please include the following logs in your next reply:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Please reply with a copy of C:\Combofix.txt, and a new HijackThis as well as the other logs

RE-Enable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications.
