Is this thing hiding in XP's System Restore? Do you turn off SR then do the Malwarebytes scan/run HiJack? Or do I need to boot to safe mode and run it there? Please advise! thanks!

    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Then RESTART the computer and AFTER the reboot run HJT Do a system scan and save a logfile

Let's remove FlashGet for now and you can re-enable it later on. Also remove the old java entries.
Close ALL open browsers and chat programs
Then start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\ssv.dll
  • O2 - BHO: gFlash Class - {F156768E-81EF-470C-9057-481BA8380DBA} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\getflash.dll
  • O3 - Toolbar: FlashGet Bar - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\fgiebar.dll
  • O8 - Extra context menu item: Download All by FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_all.htm
  • O8 - Extra context menu item: Download using FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_link.htm
  • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\ssv.dll
  • O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\ssv.dll
  • O9 - Extra button: FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe
  • O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: &FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

Then go into your Control Panel, Add/Remove and remove ALL versions of Java, Sun Java
Then run this to complete left over java entries.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then another update and scan
Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then run the following scan again

Please download the following scanning tool. GMER
• Open the zip file and copy the file gmer.exe to your Desktop.
  • Double click on gmer.exe and run it.
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • Do not make any changes. As soon as it's done and the COPY button is available click on the COPY button.
  • DO NOT Click on the SCAN button.
  • This will place the scan in your clipboard. Paste that into notepad or into your next reply post please.
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
Then run a new HJT scan and save log

ok when i was deleting Java in the control panel Norton found a virus called "Infostealer.Gampass" in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WOW849_102.dll. At that time it said it was "Unable to repair this item". I then ran the Java.ra and then another Mbam scan. During this scan Norton found the same virus again and this time said it was deleted. The Mbam scan continued and found nothing. The results are below:

The people that write this Malware found a method to circumvent the old Java and Acrobat Reader to install their junk on your system. That's why we have you remove the old versions.
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your DESKTOP : how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
NOTE!!: You must save and run ComboFix.exe on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.
Also, DO NOT click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:
ComboFix.exe
ComboFix.exe
ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.
Make sure you disable your Antivirus, and other Security Tools that could prevent this tool from running.
Also DO NOT use the mouse or keyboard while it's running. Disable your screen saver and power saver if you need to.

I notice that I have alot of processes in that log. I disabled the Norton/script detection and also Zone Alarm and SuperAnitSpyware but I was not expecting a restart so those loaded right back up. Hope that did not taint the scan? Does the fact that the scan completed on its own mean those did not have an adverse effect on the tool? Hope so cause I thought I was being really carefull with the instructions. Just didn't count on the reboot.

P.S. Is Zone Alarm a valid firewall or is it mickey mouse? I have a router but I've always used the free version of Zone Alarm as well.

Thanks Advanced!

All seems to have run well. ZoneAlarm is considered one of the better Firewalls but some people don't like it for different reasons, some don't like all the warnings, some do, some have had conflicts with other software but ZA as with other big players tries to fix those quickly when they can.
But, no it's not Mickey Mouse.

Please see if these files exist and if so I would either rename and move them or delete them. Doubt their legit files.
c:\windows\system32\atlsystem175215.exe 65244 bytes executable
c:\windows\system32\atlsystem734837.exe 106203 bytes executable

Please update your Anti-Virus and do a FULL SCAN and let me know if it finds anything or not.

Advanced--good to know scan looks ok. I will look at those files and try to delete them tonight when i get home. I did a re-boot last night to test things and Norton found the "infostealer.gampass" again instantly. It said it cleaned some and could not clean others. Are those files in the System32 directory related to this virus? thanks again!

Hello advanced- ok looking in the System32 folder their are 7 of those "atlsystem" executables.

altsystem175215.exe
altsystem241345.exe
altsystem262856.exe
altsystem329969.exe
altsystem652304.exe
altsystem734837.exe
altsystem926783.exe

booting up tonite Norton found the "infostealer.gampass" in the temporary internet files in documents and settings. should I delete the temp folder? also should I go ahead and delete all of the above. they include the 2 files you told me to delete earlier. thanks!

Yes please remove those as well and run this. Then update MBAM again and do another Scan

    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup215.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts
