Can anyone throw any light on a problem I have been having with my now circa 4 year old Acer Aspire 1640z please? It runs very slowly, working at full capacity on sometimes the smallest task. The problem is cured temporarily by a system restart, but gradually after 5-6 weeks the pc goes back to a slow-running freezing state. I am running Windows XP

Thanks OrangeAlert

I would start by looking in the Event Logs to see what's going on.

No that's not the Event Logs

Click on START - RUN - and type in EVENTVWR and hit OK

Then look at the various entries with RED and YELLOW which indicate there is an error.

My guess is that some applications are either having memory leaks or are crashing and corrupting the memory pool.
Are you running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 ?

Make sure you have your files backed up in case this pushes the hard drive over the edge.

You may have corrupted files on your disk. Please try running the following.
First close ALL Applications as this routine will automatically restart your computer.

Click on START - RUN and copy / paste the following entry into the box and click OK
CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /F | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

Ok, did that - no problems reported

Try running this and when that's done defragment the hard drive

    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup215.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts

Then we can look at other items.

Hi! Ran CCleaner as instructed, but ran into problems with defrag. The screensaver had kicked in, and after I thought defrag had been completed (several hours later and all being quiet again) I tried to see the result. All I saw was my background image and curser... I switched the pc off and on again, and then went to check out defrag again. I got an analysis error message stating the disk may be corrupt, and to run chkdsk/f. Tried that - didnt work. So I tried using the code you gave me. That ran and threw up a load of disk modifications in connection with my anti-virus program. The anti-virus software was installed only a few weeks ago (after a system reset), but the problems I am having go back a lot longer.

Never, let me say again NEVER shut down a computer while it is in the middle of a Defrag.
The system is moving files around and if you quit it like that then the MFT (Master File Table) does not know anything about those files which could be core Operating System files which could easily prevent the computer from starting back up.

More than likely it was very busy and memory was full and it needed to take time to swap code from memory to disk and finish up tasks. Basically you need to be patient and give the PC time to come back and respond. In the future let me suggest you disable any screen saver and power save modes and just turn off the monitor while it is doing any task that is going to take a long time.

At this time it's difficult to tell what damage may have been done to the data on your PC.

What current issues, or errors are you getting?

Patience, yes, received and understood. Hopefully I have not added to the situation... As regard to issues or errors, I am still getting the same as before - chip overload and freezing 'spasms'. Speech, for example, is drawn out as if a very tight echo effect has been applied. I did in fact run a (screensaver free) defrag to completion very shortly after posting that last reply and for about, say, twenty minutes the pc seemed to work a little quicker

Please run a NEW CHKDSK on your system to ensure that the file system is okay.

Then download this tool and do a Registry backup (do not allow it to add the program to the startup folder as it requests during the install)

ERUNT - The Emergency Recovery Utility NT

Then there is an option to do an NT Registry Optimizer run that, but only after doing the CHKDSK on the system.

Then we'll next look at the Startup Programs. When you're done with the above let me know and we'll proceed from there.

PS. When replying to a post please use the ADDREPLY button below, not on the REPLY button.

Thanks.

Please run this tool Add Remove Entries - which will list all the items in the Add/Remove along with the uninstall strings.
It will save a text file log in C:\AS_XYZ

If there are more than 400 entries listed please ATTACH the file DO NOT post it direclty into the post. Use the Post Preview button to ensure the post is okay.
