Hello, I came to this site after Googling the two pesky issues Malwarebytes keeps detecting and deleting- Vundo and Malware Trace. They appear to delete and then as soon as I scan again, they reappear.
My computer is freezing up, seemingly when I open I.E. and Firefox is randomly popping up with a blank window.
My IT guy at school tried running the Symantec Vundo patch, but it didnt work, and he say's "reformat." I know this can be fixed, but it is a bit outside my realm. Loading all my programs takes many hours.
I followed the directions that were given to the previous poster with the same issue, and I will copy the reports below. Any help that can be provided is sincerely appreciated; I am an architecture student and depend on this machine. If I can't fix it by Sunday, I will have to reformat.

Your log shows that you took no action. Are you sure you are running mbam correctly? Let's try this:
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
- Open mbam and run a manual update.
- When the update completes, click ok, then click on the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM. Also, please post back a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks!

Please download combofix from This Webpage...and read through the instructions there for running the tool.
***Important Note***
Please read through the guidance on that web page carefully and thoroughly...and install the Recovery Console. Using this tool without the Recovery Console installed is NOT RECOMMENDED.
If you have Windows Vista, you can skip the recovery console step...in Vista it's in the System Recovery Options menu. The System Recovery Options menu is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If Windows doesn't start correctly, you can use these tools to repair startup problems.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot into a special recovery (repair) mode that is not otherwise available. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It's a simple procedure that will only take a few moments.
Once installed, a blue screen prompt should appear that reads as follows:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
When you see that screen, please continue as follows:
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post back the following on your next reply:

The computer seems to be running much better. It has not locked up since the first Combofix, and the blank Firefox pop-ups seem to have gone away. However, it seems that whatever is in here still is automatically disabling my McAfee. I might just need to reboot again, but I am trying to wait to see your response.
After I ran the Combofix for the first time the other night, my AV found a bunch of copies of the Vundo virus, and says it deleted all of them. Another scan revealed no further infections.
Thanks again for your help!

Yeah, there is still a problem...this driver should have gone away but is still present:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\wqoxkkm.sys
...and I need now to see if you can locate these folders and tell me what's inside them:
C:\83a315ef9c993f1beca0e07b
C:\180c2cfde52617f95a
c:\windows\system32\drivers\wqoxkkm.sys
...and I need now to see if you can locate these folders and tell me what's inside them:

1972Vet, thanks again for your response.
Here is what I found in those two folders:
83a315ef9c993f1beca0e07b
There is a subfolder "update" with these two files inside
1) update.exe - Properties says it's a Windows Service Pack Setup?
2) wpdinstallutil.dll
180c2cfde52617f95a
There is a subfolder "update" with these two files inside
1) update.exe - Properties says it's a Windows Service Pack Setup?
2) wudfcustom.dll
That is all I can see, and I have the folder options set to show hidden files.
Looking forward to your response, and thanks again for all your help.

OK, we'll try this again a different way...
Please open another blank Notepad by clicking start-->run
Then, in the run box type Notepad.exe and click "OK".
Copy the below text in Bold and paste it into the blank Notepad. Save it as CFScript.txt...Change the "Save as type" to All Files and save it to your desktop. Now drag the text document over to your Combofix.exe
Combofix will run again automatically. Please post back the new log that will be generated. Thanks!

Whatever it is, it is still disabling my AV at startup, but it is also not freezing up anymore. Also, my IT guy said I should have Adaware and Spybot installed. Is this true? Should I go ahead and install these two programs?
Thanks for your help!

Please do this first:
1. Unplug or turn off your DSL/cable modem.
2. Locate the router's reset button.
3. Press, and hold, the Reset button down for 30 seconds.
4. Wait for your Power, WLAN and Internet light to turn on. (On the router)
5. Plug in or turn on your modem.(if it is separate from the router)
6. Open your web browser to see if you have an internet connection. If you still don't have an internet connection you may need to restart your computer.
Once you establish an internet connection, please open another blank Notepad by clicking start-->run...Then, in the run box type Notepad.exe and click "OK".
Copy the below text in Bold and paste it into the blank Notepad. Save it as CFScript.txt...Change the "Save as type" to All Files and save it to your desktop. Now drag the text document over to your Combofix.exe
Once again, combofix will run again automatically. Please post back the new log that will be generated along with a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks!

Please do not. Spybot is fine and I will give you instructions for it's proper use once we are finished with this cleanup. Adaware however would be a bit of overkill and in my opinion, would not be necessary given the fact that you will have been running your on board antivirus solution, mbam and spybot...those are sufficient.

1972Vet,
Thanks again for your quick response. I did everything as you asked, and it looks like my router was successfully reset; the network name reverted back to "linksys" and is now unsecure. Unfortunately, whatever it is, it is still disabling my AV.
Here is the Combofix report:

the network name reverted back to "linksys" and is now unsecure. Unfortunately, whatever it is, it is still disabling my AV.
On most Linksys routers your username/password combination becomes empty on reset (no username) / with password "admin" (without the quotes). You need to establish a new strong password. I can't do that for you.
Run hijackthis again and check the box next to this entry:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
...close all open windows except for hijackthis, then click the Fix Checked button. Reboot the computer to properly record the change to the hard disk.
Do you have your McAfee installation CD? Most software issues are resolved upon uninstall/reinstall of the software.

Why is it unsecured? Are you not the system administrator?

1972 Vet,
The network was unsecure b/c you had me reset the router, I was just letting you know it had been done correctly. I can reconfigure everything there to make it secure.
I also removed and reinstalled McAfee, and rebooted after fixing the item in Hijackthis, it seems that the AV is working normally. After updating the AV and running a scan, no infections were detected.
Here is the newest Hijack this log:

So far, the machine seems to be running great, no problems. Does this log look good to you now?
Should I go ahead and install Spybot?
I really aprreciate all your time and effort 1972Vet, you are my new hero. I'll never listen to my IT guy at school anymore. Reformatting would have cost me a whole lot more time.
Any other tips to prevent a similar future situation would be appreciated.

Please download "Spybot search and destroy"
After installation, Go to Start-->Programs-->Spybot - Search & Destroy and when the program opens, click on the mode tab at the top left of the application window and select "advanced". Notice the additional options that now appear in the left pane (column of buttons).
Next, in the left pane, click on the Tools button (near the bottom). In the right pane, you'll see a listing of options...make sure these are checked:
Resident
Browser Pages
IE tweaks
Hosts Files
...there may be others checked (which is fine by the way), but make sure that at least those mentioned above all have checks in the box next to them.
In the menu on the left hand side you should see "Resident", click there then in the right pane under "resident protection status" put a check mark in the box next to "resident SD helper (Internet explorer bad download blocker) and Remove the check from the box for Resident Tea Timer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
Look again to the left pane under the Tools section. From the left pane, click the Hosts File button. Now in the right pane, click the green + Add Spybot-S&D hosts list button.
Next, from the left pane, please click the Spybot-S&D button. From the right side pane, click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and download and install the Updates (make sure all the updates it found has a check in the box).
When the updates complete, please click "immunize" from the menu on the left. Then in the right pane click the +immunize button...you should see a progress bar as the application begins to immunize the system.
When the progress bar completes, you should see "0" in the Unprotected heading. If you do not, then click the green + Immunize button at the top just above that progress bar. You will see the numbers roll back until it reaches "0".
Next click the "Search and Destroy" button from the left pane menu then click the "check for Problems" button in the right pane.
Spybot will now scan your computer and display in the "problem" window any bad programs it finds. When the scan completes, it may show red, black, and green entries. Please put a check mark next to all the RED entries and click "fix selected problems". When finished, close the application and reboot the computer. Post back your results. Thanks!
