Full Version: Rootkit, Trojan disappear??
Malwarebytes Forum > Computer Help > Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs
KMW
I previously posted in this forum about problems I was having with a rootkit and Trojan which MBAM could detect but not remove. I was advised to reformat by Extremeboy, so I've been getting all the necessary discs as well as saving my files on an external hard drive. But I noticed something weird: when I now run MBAM it is no longer detecting the two viruses! Now I haven't taken any action to try to remove them, so I am wondering what happened? I can't imagine they just disappeared. Or is it that MBAM can no longer detect them? I still plan to do the reformat, but I find this puzzling. I'm posting the log I first posted here, and then the new log. If anyone has any ideas I'd be glad to hear them.

Well not sure what other AV software or Security software you're running and / or if this Malware was able to cloak itself even further.

Its up to you, we can scan and find more information and possibly clean it but if you're going to FDISK/FORMAT/RE-INSTALL then not much since in doing that.

Let us know. IF you do want to try and locate or remove it then please follow the steps below.

STEP 01
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your DESKTOP : how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
NOTE!!: You must save and run ComboFix.exe on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.
Also, DO NOT click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:
ComboFix.exe
ComboFix.exe
ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

STEP 02
Download DDS and save it to your desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

Disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, the DDS.txt will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt

STEP 03
    Please create a BOOTLOG
  • Restart the computer and press F8 when Windows start booting. This will bring up the startup options.
  • Select "Enable Boot Logging" option and press enter.
  • Windows prompts you to select a Windows Installation (even if there is only one windows installation)
  • This boots windows normally and creates a boot log named ntbtlog.txt and saves it to C:\Windows

If you're already running inside Windows you can enable it the following way.
  • Click on START - RUN and type in MSCONFIG go to the BOOT.INI tab and place a check mark by /BOOTLOG
  • Click on OK and you will be prompted to RESTART Windows. Please do restart now.
  • After Windows restarts open the file C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt with Notepad
  • From the Edit menu choose Select All then Edit, COPY and post that back on your next reply.
  • NOTE: If the file is over about 150 lines or so then DELETE the C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt file and restart the computer and post the NEW one it creates.
  • NOTE: Vista users can type in the Search and it will show on the menu, then Right click and choose Run as Adminsitrator
  • The tab is called BOOT on Vista. Then choose Boot log

STEP 04
RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector
  • Please download the following tool: RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector
  • Direct download link is here: RootRepeal.rar
  • If you don't already have a program to open a .RAR compressed file you can download a trial version from here: WinRAR
  • Extract the program file to a new folder such as C:\RootRepeal
  • Run the program RootRepeal.exe and go to the REPORT tab and click on the Scan button
  • Select ALL of the checkboxes and then click OK and it will start scanning your system.
  • If you have multiple drives you only need to check the C: drive or the one Windows is installed on.
  • When done, click on Save Report
  • Save it to the same location where you ran it from, such as C:\RootRepeal
  • Save it as your_name_rootrepeal.txt - where your_name is your forum name
  • This makes it more easy to track who the log belongs to.
  • Then open that log and select all and copy/paste it back on your next reply please.
  • Quit the RootRepeal program.

I am posting the ComboFix and HiJackThis logs. One note: when I first started having problems with the computer, a Malware tech asked me to download ComboFix, and we could never get it to download to the machine. So I was surprised it actually downloaded this time.

Did you reset MSCONFIG back to Normal Startup?

Where are the other logs from DDS, BOOTLOG, and Root Repeal?

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup217.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run (basically the very top, uncheck it)
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts

Download and Update Java Runtime
The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.

I did reset MSCONFIG back to normal. Sorry I did not run the other logs, I thought you wanted me to do one step and then post. I've run the rest, as well as removed and reloaded Java, and run CCleaner. I will post the logs in multiple messages.

Open a new Notepad session (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and set the location to your Desktop, and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFscript.txt" .

Using your mouse, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the Combo-Fix.exe icon as shown:

  • Disconnect from the Internet.
  • Disable your Antivirus software. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well.
  • A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.
  • It may identify that Recovery Console is not installed. Please accept when asked if you wish it to be installed.
When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post back the Combofix log on your next reply.

STEP 04
Run a NEW DDS scan and post back that log and let me know how the computer is running now.
KMW
I am posting the new ComboFix and DDS logs below.

As for your question about performance, the machine has actually been running fine. My main issue had been problems running Explorer - windows opening and closing by themselves, pop-ups, etc - but that seems to have disappeared even before the rootkit and trojan were removed (or hid deeper, whatever the case may be). Otherwise, the computer runs fine, no slow downs or other issues. My main question/issue is, are these two viruses really off my machine or can MBAM just not find them any more? By the way, I tried a number of other anti-virus software before MBAM and none of them could even detect the viruses!

Also, just wanted to say thanks for all your help in this issue.

============= FINISH: 10:05:58.04 ===============
AdvancedSetup
The log looks pretty clean now, we just need to remove the cleanup tools and do an Anti-Virus scan to finish up for the most part.

Did you save and run that REG file above and then reboot your computer?

Please click on START - RUN and type in EVENTVWR and look in the Application and System logs and look for any RED or YELLOW events that might indicate an issue and let me know what you find. You were having problems with the Server services not starting at one point.
KMW
I did reboot the computer after I saved the reg file. I've been saving everything basically!

I looked in the Application and System logs as you asked. In the application logs, I repeatedly get this error - it looks like it happens when the computer is booted:

Error 4/5/2009 10:33:59 AM Media Center Phone Service None 8 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

I also get these errors/warnings repeatedly:

Error 4/4/2009 12:02:23 AM Application Hang (101) 1002 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

Error 4/2/2009 10:13:55 AM Application Error None 1000 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

Warning 3/31/2009 4:39:02 PM System.ServiceModel.Install 3.0.0.0 None 0 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

Warning 3/31/2009 4:38:48 PM ASP.NET 2.0.50727.0 Setup 1020 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

From the system log I got these:

Error 4/7/2009 9:32:14 AM Service Control Manager None 7034 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

Error 4/7/2009 9:32:13 AM Service Control Manager None 7031 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

Warning 4/6/2009 9:07:18 AM Dhcp None 1003 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

Error 4/5/2009 8:02:59 PM Service Control Manager None 7001 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57 (this error occurred dozens of times some days, usually within seconds of each other)

Warning 4/3/2009 11:15:52 PM W32Time None 36 N/A KAREN-FC4119C57

So what does it all mean?
AdvancedSetup
Well you would probably need to save the .EVT files for me to look at and see if I can track down the cause or not.

From within the Event Viewer you would highlight one of the trees on the left like Application and then System and for each right click and choose Save Log File As and give it a name like Karen-Application.evt and Karen-System.evt then zip them both up and if they're not too big attach them to a Private Message to me, or upload them to a site like http://www.rapidshare.com and send me a Private Message with the link to the download that Rapidshare gives you. Save or write down that link so you have it for later.

How To Use Compressed (Zipped) Folders in Windows XP
Compress and uncompress files (zip files) in Vista
KMW
I have sent the links in a PM.
AdvancedSetup
Okay the logs actually don't look too bad, but something is killing services randomly.

Let's try the following please.

Please download and run this program: Dial-a-fix

Then after that is done and a restart of the computer run the following.

Please click on START - RUN and copy and paste the information below into the box and click OK
CODE
CMD /C SC QUERY state= all >C:\MYSERVICES.TXT | NOTEPAD C:\MYSERVICES.TXT

This should open NOTEPAD with information regarding the current services on your system. Copy and paste back that information on your next reply.
If it's too big to post you can attach it, but it should post.
KMW
OK, I ran Dial A Fix and the script you posted. Here's what I got:

Looks good.

How is the computer running now?
Are there still any signs of infection?

Did you visit the Windows Update site and check for updates?
KMW
I checked Windows Update and the machine is up to date.

It seems to be running fine. No problems with either Explorer or Firefox browsers. Speed seems good.

So is it safe to assume that the trojan and rootkit have been removed?
AdvancedSetup
The logs look clean. You should update your Anti-Virus to the latest rules and do a full system scan and also update MBAM and do a quick scan with it as well and post back the log and let me know if your AV finds anything or not, but so far it appears to be clean.
KMW
Here's my MBAM log:

Great. Let me know when the Anti-Virus scan is done and if it finds anything please.
KMW
Sorry, which anti-virus program are we talking about?
AdvancedSetup
eeek... I saw the Panda in your log and assumed you were running that. Now it looks like it was maybe only an online scanner.
You do not appear to have any Anti-Virus installed. That is a NO NO

Please install an Anti-Virus product ASAP and update it and do a Full System scan.
If you don't have one and are not sure then I would suggest the Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus

Please scan your system with Anti-Virus and let me know what it finds. Thanks.
KMW
I thought that buying the protection module for MBAM was taking care of my anti-virus protection. Geez. I wish I had understood that better. I used to use Trend Micro but got rid of it when I got MBAM.

OK, I downloaded and ran Avira. Here is what it said:

Well you can user Trend if you like it. Just didn't see any. MBAM is an Anti-Malware product which is not the same as Anti-Virus and BOTH type of products are needed. Often Anti-Virus suites include Anti-Malware these days, but often are not as up to date and rapid as MBAM is.

You can go into the Trend quarantine folder and delete all of those files now.

The system looks clean and good to go now.

How is the computer running now?
Are there still any signs of infection?

Do you have any other concerns before I finish up with closing information and actually close your post?

Thanks for explaining the difference. As you can tell, I don't know much about this stuff.

The computer is running fine. I haven't noticed any issues. I'm still puzzled about how those two viruses 'disappeared' - they were there so long (2 months!) and MBAM could never remove them. Then one day I run it, and they are gone - not even detected, just gone. But if the system looks clean now, after all this, then I guess I'll believe it.

Thanks for all your help. You really were persistent and clear in your communication.

Actually I have a question: on the Avira should it be set to scanner or guard? What is the difference?
AdvancedSetup
MBAM gets updated numerous times throughout the day with new instructions on how to detect and remove new threats. So basically in effect it gets smarter each day. Then when you updated MBAM it now knew how to detect AND remove it, so it did.

We reviewed and removed some other undesirable items using other tools so now your system appears to be clean.

The GUARD of Avira should always be enabled. It monitors suspicious files continuously when it's on so that it can protect you. If you have it off you could potentially get infected by something that it knew to stop, but you had it off so it didn't stop it.

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.
Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.
Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.
Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on START > RUN > and type in %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and click OK
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "Create".
  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use the Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr.exe
  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
  • On the Disk Cleanup tab, if the System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores entry is available remove them also.
  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.

Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
