Currently I make use of both Norton AntiVirus 2009 and Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware for protection. Last night while browsing the web I began getting several notifications in a row from Norton informing me that it was blocking several harmful actions.

According to the logs the first event was this:

At this point a Norton dialogue box requested a system restart to finish dealing with the threats. I restarted the machine as requested but Norton failed to load.

Since then I have been unable to get Norton to load up, except in safe mode, where it’s scanning abilities seem to be extremely limited and not at all useful. I also can’t get Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware to load either (including in Windows (XP) safe mode). When loaded by me, Internet Explorer usually fails to connect to the internet the first two attempts, and after that it usually either shuts down when I attempt to visit Norton’s site or, at times, redirects me elsewhere. I have also received two browser pop-ups since last night which warn me that my system is unprotected and advise purchasing a specific anti-virus software (although the name and exact details escape me).

On top of this I have been keeping an eye on my task manager and an entry for “iexplorer.exe” seems to pop up on the list every 10-15 minutes, and given enough time multiple iexplorer.exe copies show up there (but no actual internet explorer windows are open on screen). If I choose to terminate the process it just eventually reappears shortly after.

Beyond that, since last night my system has either slowed to a crawl or frozen completely after running for more than a couple of hours.

I’d appreciate any help I could get. I ran HijackThis and here are the hijackthis.log and startuplist.txt files it produced.

Next, please perform a rootkit scan:

• Double-click the randomly name EXE located in the C:\ARK folder that you just downloaded to run the program.
• When the program opens, it will automatically initiate a very fast scan of common rootkit hiding places.
• When the scan is finished (a few seconds, click the Rootkit/Malware tab,and then select the Scan button.
• Leave your system completely idle while this longer scan is in progress.
• When the scan is done, save the scan log to the Windows clipboard
• Open Notepad or a similar text editor
• Paste the clipboard contents into a text file by clicking Edit | Paste or Ctl V
• Exit the Program
• Save the Scan log as ARK.txt and post it in your next reply. If the log is very long attach it please.

• It is very important that save the newly renamed EXE file to your desktop.

Very Important! Temporarily disable your Norton antivirus and antimalware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and even remove onboard components so it is rendered ineffective:

Also, disable your firewall!
You can enable the Window firewall in the interim, until the scan is complete.

Note: The above tutorial does not tell you to rename Combofix as I have instructed you to do in the above instructions, so make sure you complete the renaming step before launching Combofix.

Running Combofix

In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it as this is a new version.

• Close any open browsers.
• Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

1. Double click on the renamed combofix.exe (bingo.exe) & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

Please post back ARK.txt and C:\Combofix.txt

Thanks for the help. I hopped on this immediately but it took quite a while for the scans to finish.

I also ran into a little trouble while running Combofix. I was unable to deactivate Norton AntiVirus because it hasn't been showing up in my taskbar since this problem I'm having started the other night. I did disable Avira AntiVir, however (which I had installed shortly after visiting here), in addition to my Window's Firewall and Adaware. However, when I ran Combofix it warned me (twice) that Norton AntiVirus was still running. Prior to running Combofix I had disabled the Norton Antivirus entry through my msconfig=>services tab. When warned that it was still running I checked my task manager and could find no signs of it, so I prompted Combofix to continue running anyway.

Shortly into the run Combofix requested a restart and presented me with a list of filenames (and asked me to write them down in case they were needed later, which I did). I allowed Combofix to restart the machine, but the process of rebooting caused Avira AntiVir to reload with Windows, and a warning from (regarding Combofix) popped up once Combofix began it's process again. I told Avira AntiVir to ignore Combofix but I was unable to disable it again at that point as Combofix had caused the majority of my desktop controls to vanish.

Anyway, it eventually finished and here are the requested logs. Ark.txt is uploaded as file due to its size.

Also, after following your instructions Malwarebytes is now able to load. I also re-enabled Norton AV through my msconfig=>services tab and it is also loading when the system boots into Windows. However, I haven't done scans with either program yet (and won't until you suggest that it's time to do so). The HijackThis log I pasted in my last post is with Norton AV still disabled from the Combofix session.

By all means, go ahead and scan wit both your AV and MBAM then post the results.

You will get some hits in C:\Qoobox\Quarantine because of the items Combofix quarantimed and you will also get hits in System Volume information, but there is no need to worry about threats detected in either of these loctions.

Post those logs when done please.

Are you retaining Antivir as a second on demand scanner?

Looking at it, I've never been to http://www.winpcap.org/. At first I thought it might be a component for a program I had installed several years ago called "Net Limiter 2 Lite", but now looking at the properties on the WinPcap directory I see that it was created on 4-29-09 at 5:38 in the evening. (so, a few weeks ago). I can't think of anything I installed recently that would make use of it.

The .jnlp-applet folder was created on 4-28-09 at 5:39 in the evening (almost exactly 24 hours after WinPcap). I have no idea why it's there either.

As for AntiVir, I had run a scan with it after my initial post and by the end it had 11 events of malware detections. I'm not sure if they were false positives, but I'm a bit disturbed that having just run a virus scan a few days ago Norton AV turned up empty while AntiVir is flagging 11 files (some of which I've had for a while) as being infected. Is there any harm in keeping it as a backup scanner? Honestly, at this point I'm thinking Norton should be my backup scanner as this is the second time now that I've had a serious virus problem and both times Norton failed to prevent/fix it. Instead I had to rely on other tools (like MBAM) to save my system.

I'm in the process of running MBAM, but twice now it seems to become unresponsive while scanning "C:\Windows\Installer\b8290d.msi". During MBAM's first scan attempt Norton popped up a message warning me that it had detected and removed a heuristic virus threat called "Packed.Generic.200" from my system.

I would delete the WinPCap program from Add/Remove programs and at a minimum, rename the jnlp-applet folder. Then you can make sure isn't needed for your normal PC activities.

You can keep both Antivir and Symantec as long as you have only one of them enabled for on access scanning. You should disable the protection module service on the one you want to keep for demand scanning only. This may help you decide whoch one to keep for active protection:

You should do only a quick scan with MBAM, because that is enough to detect any active malware that it contains definitions and heuristics for.

This is a Windows installer for some program:
"C:\Windows\Installer\b8290d.msi"
If you navigate to that location and then double-click it, you can see what application it installs. You have to enable viewing of hidden files and folders first.

However, don't continue with the install or uninstall - just cancel out of the install once you identify the application it is associated with.

You can always move the above file to some other media, and move it back again after the MBAM scan is complete, but I don't think the "quick scan", scans that folder.

I just completed a scan with Norton-AV and it's come up with the following three alerts:

* Packed.Generic.200 has been fully resolved <= Norton just claimed it fixed this 2 hours ago yet here it is again.
* Downloader has been fully resolved.
* Backdoor.Tidserv has been resolved. Restart required.

When this scan was completed I restarted Windows as requested (keeping in mind this is where everything went horribly wrong the first time), but Norton seems to be still up and running now that Windows has reloaded. Norton's security history log now shows that Backdoor.Tidserv has been "removed".

After that I did a quick scan with MBAM and it didn't find anything.

I did another scan and log of HijackThis and now I'm going to run a Norton-AV scan again just to be safe. I also uninstalled WinPCap, renamed the jnlp-applet folder, and disabled Antivir. Iexplore.exe doesn't seem to be loading silently anymore in the background but somehow during all of this Firefox got flagged as my default web browser (which I'm fine with, I'm just wondering if that's why the Iexplore.exe problem has vanished).

Anyhow, does everything look normal with this log now?

No sooner did I finish sending the above post off when Norton popped up new warnings about Backdoor.Tidserv and Packed.Generic.200. It requested another restart and after I did that I ran another scan with Norton-AV and it didn't find anything else. The log lists both of those threats as "removed" (again), and for the past few hours nothing new has popped up. Maybe they're really gone at this point, but I can't help but wonder if I still have an infected file on my system somewhere that keeps reinfecting it.

Your HJT log is clean but your Java is outdated and this can make your system insecure.

You should update your version of the Sun Java Platform (JRE) to the newest version which is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13:

1. Download the latest JRE version at the http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Sun Microsystem's website
2. Select the option that says: Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13 - "This release includes several key security updates, the highly anticipated 64-bit Java Plug-In (for 64-bit browsers only), Windows Server 2008 support, and performance improvements of Java and JavaFX applications", and click Download button.
3. Select your platform: Windows, in the pull down menu.
4. Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement."
5. Click Continue.
6. Under the Windows Platform - Java ™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 13 section, click on the link to download the Windows Offline Installation and save the installer to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Next, remove all older versions of the Sun Java Platform using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Program feature (as they may contain security vulnerabilities).
9. Reboot your system
10. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version of the Sun Java Platform
12. The Yahoo Toolbar is prechecked for installation with this version of Java. Make sure to UNCHECK it, if you do not care to have it, or already have it installed - it is not part of the JRE install and totally unnecessary.
13. You may verify that the current version installed properly by clicking http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp here.

If you have the threat log with what Norton found when it flagged Tidserv (TDSServ) then that would help. I need to know the specific file. It's possible it's flagging something that is inactive and does not pose a threat.

If malicous threat wants to use Internet Explorer, it will do so regardless of whether it is your default browser.

You can try running the ARK scan again, with Norton OFF, because it is capable of detecting that infection.

I would like you to run a complete system scan with one of the following two scanners (DrWeb or ESET)- directions for both are included below. Expect some detections in Qoobox and system volume information (they will not be active malware so don't worry):

  • enable "Remove found threats"
  • Scan unwanted applications
• Click the Scan button to begin scanning.
• When the scan is done the log is automatically saved. To retrieve it
  • Close the ESET scan Window.
  • Now open a run line by clicking Start >> Run...
  • Copy/paste "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt" ino the Open box:
  • The Scan results will now display in Notepad
• Please copy and paste the ESET scan report that can be found in this location

Note to Vista users and anyone with restrictive IE security settings: Depending on your security settings, you may have to allow cookies and put the ESET website, www.eset.com, into the trusted zone of Internet Explorer if the scan has problems starting (in Vista this is a necessity as IE runs in Protected mode).

To do that, on the Internet Explorer menu click Tools => Internet Options => Security => Trusted Sites => Sites. Then uncheck "Require server verification for all sites in this zone" checkbox at the bottom of the dialog. Add the above www.eset.com url to the list of trusted sites, by inserting it in the blank box and clicking the Add button, then click Close. For cookies, choose the IE7 Privacy tab and add the above eset.com url to the exceptions list for cookie blocking.

As an alternative, to an online antivirus scan, you can run a scan with Dr. Web CureIt!. This scanner is an downloaded as a randomly named executable file that is ready to go with no extracting and no updating. It does take a while to scan, so be patient.. It also detects a lot of malware that other scanners miss and can repair many damaged files that are essential for your computer.

1. Please download DrWeb-CureIt by clicking the "CureIt! Download" button on the right-side of the page. Save the randomly named executable file to your desktop, but DO NOT perform a scan yet.
2. Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, an Advanced Options Menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

3. Double-click on randomly named EXE file you just downloaded to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
4. Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to "cure it".
5. Once the short scan has finished, Click Options --> Change settings
6. Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
7. Back at the main window, click "Complete Scan"
8. Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green triangular "play" button on the right), and the scan will start.
9. When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any threats were found.
10. Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
11. When the scan has finished, see if you can locate the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
12. Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click File and then choose Save report.
13. Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
14. Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
15. Important! Reboot your computer so any targeted files that were in use can be moved/deleted during reboot.
16. After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report by right-clicking the file and selecting "Open With" -> Notepad.

In your next reply, please include the following:

• Dr.Web Log or ESET log
• A new HJT log

Your ARK log shows only innocent entries. Yes, your ARK scan will vary based on many factors such as background programs, temp file content, system restore logging, Windows logging, etc.

There are TiDSserv entries in your Norton scan but those that occurred post CF do no mention a file name like this one does:

What we have to do is remove the CF quarantine, and then if you get detections after that it is a cause for concern.

Let's remove Combofix and all its associated files including those in quarantine:
Click start -> run, then copy and paste the following line into the Open box and click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\Bongo.exe" /u

This will do the following:

• Uninstall Combofix and all its associated files and folders.
• It will flush your system restore points and create a new restore point.
• It will rehide your system files and folders
• Reset your system clock

Here are some additional measures you should take to keep your system in good working order and ensure your continued security.

1. Scan your system for outdated versions of commonly used software applications that may also cause your PC be vulnerable, using the Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI)

Just click the "Start Scanner" button to get a listing of all outdated and possibly insecure resident programs.

Note: If your firewall prompts you about access, allow it.

2. Keep MBAM as an on demand scanner because I highly recommend it, and the quick scan will find most all active malware in minutes.

3. You can reduce your startups by downloading Malwarebyte's StartUp Lite and saving it to a convenient location. Just double-click StartUpLite.exe. Then, check the options you would like based on the descriptions provided, then select continue. This will free up system resources because nonessential background programs will no longer be running when you start up your computer.

If Norton gives any additional warnings after Combofix and its associated files are removed, then please report that back here.
