Full Version: hit by seneka virus
Malwarebytes Forum > Computer Help > Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs
largemango
Hi, I'm posting because I may have removed the viruses and trojan successfully, but I wanted to make sure. I also wanted to offer some help -- I was having the recurring seneka virus that couldn't be deleted, plus I could not connect to any anti-malware sites. The various scans helped -- but what really helped was when I realized that a program "btdna.exe" was repeatedly trying to access the internet (norton alerted me). Turns out it was from a bit torrent program I had downloaded -- stupidly, especially since I never used it -- and as soon as I stopped it functioning (in Task Manager) and deleted the entire DNA folder my troubles immediately seemed to vanish. So, I hope that could help someone out.

I also hope someone could look over my logs, since I really want to make sure it's all gone! Thanks in advance.

Anyway, here are my latest logs:

You need to go into your Add/Remove in Control Panel and remove the Bit Torrent Client to remove all of the DNA

Quit all open Browsers and Chat programs
Then start HJT and do a Scan Only and place a check mark on the following items.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent DNA] "C:\Program Files\DNA\btdna.exe"
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [msiexec.exe] msiconf.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [msiexec.exe] msiconf.exe (User 'Default user')
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll

Then click on Fix checked and quit HJT

Othewise the logs look pretty good. Is there still any sign of an infection?

Thanks for the response. Shortly after sending my last post I decided to do another panda scan -- and was shocked to find 118 "infected" files! Maybe I had run it before in safe mode? Anyway, if you could cast your eyes over the panda log that would be cool. I realized that most of them were tracking cookies (which I deleted from the log) and it seems like the rest of them have already been quarantined?

I did the final Bit Torrent removal and HJT scan/remove you suggested.

Here's the panda scan:

It is basically stuff that is either in quarantine or an archive file. MBAM does not scan inside archive files because alone they are harmless as long as the parent process has been killed off and removed. Antivirus though does scan all files including archives.

If Panda did not remove them then I would go and delete them manually as you don't want or need them.

Please run this tool which should remove any of the old tools that were installed and used for cleaning your computer.

Please Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • While connected to the Internet, Click on the green CleanUp! button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.
  • It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.

NOW please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process and post back the log from OTMoveIt3

Please run the following again.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Great, your system looks to be clean now.

Here is some information to help you keep the system clean. I would highly suggest you update the XP Service Pack to SP3
I'll close this post so other won't post into it, if you run into issues again please create a new post.

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install hpHosts
Download it from here
hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,
tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites
by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.
hpHosts Support Forum

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
