I'm running Windows XP SP2 on an Acer laptop. I got virtumonde.K last night and have been cleaning up since. I have done some manual removal (I work in IT) and have run MBAM, but HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS Juan keeps reappearing.

I was in the middle of a live chat with Norton on Firefox when I took this scan - they wanted £69 before they've even look!
I have tried removing the suspect add-ons from IE. There were several called "Secure Delivery" that had file names that corresponded with several odd-looking DLLs that appeared in System32 about the time I was infected. I've been able to disable them but it won't let me delete them, although I have deleted the DLLs. One of them made a bck of inself in there, so I've deleted that too.

Meanwhile, although I can get onto here via Firefox, IE is coming up blank and Norton 360 appears to have been disabled. Can someone help me get rid of Juan and get these working properly again?

Also, it won't let MBAM update - complains:
"Update failed. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and your firewall is set to allow Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to access the internet."

My other programs haven't had problems connecting, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I've checked my default for html files is Firefox, so I'm not sure if its trying to open IE and failing or if there's something else going wrong.

Things have improved since last night. I've managed to delete the registry folder by changing the privs on the sub-folders and deleting them manually. I've rebooted and it hasn't reappeared. Re-ran MBAM and it gave me the all-clear.
However, IE won't pick up any web addresses (even though Firefox is working perfectly) and Norton was disabled (have reinstalled from the original CD).
Would still appreciate some advice on fixing Explorer.

Then update MBAM and do another Quick Scan and fix anything found, then restart the computer.

AFTER the reboot please run a NEW HJT Scan and Save log.

Many thanks for the advice - my laptop is now cured.

I had to go into the Registry and change the permissions on the MS Juan folder's sub-folders one by one to delete them, then the top level last. Once I did that, I ran MBAM again and got an all clear. I then restored Norton 360 from the original disk and ran a complete scan with that. I did one more reboot and one more MBAM run, then I found IE had cleared, so I did an MBAM update and another run to be on the safe side.

Reran yesterday - still clear - so that seems to be that. Sadly, my TomTom that was affected at the time I was infected is still suffering, but that's a whole other story and not one I'd expect your help on.

Not that I can see - although I haven't managed to get my TomTom that was attached at the time working again. I've logged a fault call with them.

Microsoft KB article to reset TCP/IP
One of the components of the Internet connection on your computer is a built-in set of instructions called TCP/IP. TCP/IP can sometimes become corrupted. If you cannot connect to the Internet and you have tried all other methods to resolve the problem, TCP/IP might be causing it.
Because TCP/IP is a core component of Windows, you cannot remove it. However, you can reset TCP/IP to its original state by using the NetShell utility (netsh)
How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP

Basically you can type this in a DOS command prompt.


Make sure your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts file does not contain entries that are blocking those sites.
You can open that file with notepad. Unless you have a managed hosts file then only "127.0.0 localhost" will be in it.

If that is okay then you can try to reset some of the core Microsoft DLL files to see if it will restore the IE Updates.
Please download this file, double-click to open and then double-click the batch file in it.
Restart the computer and see if Windows Update works now..
