thanks for the info.

I have used this program forever! what are your thoughts on Defraggler? (by the same company)

I like the fact that you can just select certain files and have it ONLY defrag those files...it seems to take longer, but on heavily frag'd drives, it usually only has to make 1-2 passes, where with the default defrager, it may take many.

Not trying to go too far off topic tongue.gif
exile360
I've heard of disc errors related to defraggler. You can read about it on the Piriform forums (the company that makes Defraggler, Ccleaner, Recuva etc). I generally just stick with the built in Windows Defrag program. An added tip:
CODE
defrag %systemdrive% /b
This will do a boot-time defrag (it defragments the files called when the system boots) and it can speed up startup times for a system.
chimpy
Trend micro says it not been updated since 2005? http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/CWShredder/
or it that site a false one?
exile360
CWShreedder is a different tool, it is used to remove an old spyware infection/browser hijacker known as "CoolWebSearch". Ccleaner on the other hand (A.K.A. CrapCleaner) is a program used for removing unnecessary temp files from a computer (like cookies, temporary internet files etc) and also has the ability to control what programs run when your system boots, uninstall programs, and delete unnecessary keys from the registry.

Sorry about that! I miss read blink.gif
I have downloaded it though laugh.gif

I use Defraggler on my XP and Vista systems but I only use it to defrag individual files and not to defrag the whole hard drive as I prefer to use the Windows defrag for the whole drive.

CODE
defrag %systemdrive% /b
I tried it in Vista cmd window but it indicates that it has to be run by an Administrator.
exile360
Yes, in Vista you must use an administrative command prompt or run the .bat file as admin (if using a .bat file) because the built in Defrag tool requires administrative privelages.

I'm a Vista n00b.
How do I get a command prompt with administrative privileges?

exile360
Click on the Start Orb and and type cmd. Once it shows up at the top of the list, right click on it and select Run as administrator. Although the easiest way would still be to create a .bat file with the command and just right click it and select Run as administrator (less typing in the long run smile.gif ).

This thread might benefit from a title edit. CCleaner v2.17.853 is out of date and it appears to have become a signature update thread for updates to CCleaner slim no toolbar.

This thread might benefit from a title edit. CCleaner v2.17.853 is out of date and it appears to have become a signature update thread for updates to CCleaner slim no toolbar.

I can't change the title unfortunatly.
exile360
I could always just make a new thread if you guys would like smile.gif . And I'm not a big fan of toolbars either. I can also add links to the portable version if you'd like.
YoKenny1
How about closing this one and make a new one just titled CCleaner?
ahsenag
It's too bad you can't just edit the title and keep the continuity of this thread on CCleaner going. All the comments about each update and the history are interesting to read and keep up with in a single thread updated over time; even the side issues that get brought up keep a thread going over time and enhance it's readability and interest. Just my two cents. This is a great forum - keep up all your good work biggrin.gif
exile360
@YoKenny1: Unfortunately I don't have the power to close a topic, but I can start a new one of course and even considered it when I started adding to this one because of the title, I just didn't want too much redundancy (ie 2 CCleaner threads in the Updates area).

@ahsenaq: Yes, I don't think even the OP can change the title of the post once it's been made and I agree there's some pretty good and informative stuff in here. I think once a new version comes out I'll just do a "CCleaner" topic and put in the details and links to both the Slim build and the Portable one (sorry, I'm just not a fan of toolbars tongue.gif ).
sho-dan
On most forums the thread poster has the power to change the topic title until a reply has been posted, also contacting a Mod (if they have full rights to edit) can edit the thread topic title.

btw. the topic title has been changed to just CCleaner wink.gif

ps. as a Mod at a different forum, I have full rights. tongue.gif
exile360
Cool beans smile.gif . Thanks for the heads-up sho-dan and thank you mighty Admin or Mod for changing the title of the topic. They have looked down upon us from the lofty heights of Olympus and smiled, shedding the light of their glorious mercy upon us but they still won't share their Ambrosia laugh.gif . I guess redbull is reserved for the higher ups biggrin.gif .
ahsenag
@ ADMIN and MOD - whoever worked their magic and edited the title of this thread, thanks biggrin.gif

@ Exile360 - I'm with you - no toolbars! not a fan either of toolbars, but I'm a fan of CCleaner slim no toolbar

Nice idea to keep this thread going with the latest update information. cool.gif

Version 2.19.901 is released. It fixes a bug introduced in build 2.19.900 that stripped saved passwords from Firefox. My experience with 2.19.900 was that it also stripped the recent history from the smart location bar in Firefox as well. That appears to be fixed with this release.

What I have not yet tested is the deletion of IE8 cookies. Version 2.19.889 was supposed to have fixed an IE8 cookie bug , but then 2.19.900 also claims to have fixed disappearing IE8 cookies on reboot.

This is a great program. Well worth a couple of annoyances now and again.

As an aside/extra - Re : Windows > System tools > Disc Cleanup -
Will this remove 'almost' as much as C Cleaner or is this action one that M/soft has overlooked - mellow.gif
I do use both, (C Cleaner seems to remove heaps more) so is this one item they (M/S) left more to 3rd parties - rolleyes.gif
yardbird
Ccleaner will clean out more, disk cleanup, you can see what it will clean up, but if you install & remove programs, CCleaner will get out whats left over ie: dll files, theres a forum for ccleaner,
noknojon
I know of the forum - Have been there and I am now a member -
The other half of the statement related to the fact that M/Soft seems to again rely on 3rd parties to do the work that they could have included ??-
Is that the case, or does it seem they feel they have done enough ? - huh.gif Like MBAM is more efficient and superior to Defender - rolleyes.gif

EDIT -
Also relating to the company (Piriform) -
C Cleaner 'seems' to be having a lot of complaints with their Defraggler lately -
I have deleted it as I was having slow defrags with it and installed Auslogics program - As I am also having slow defrags with M/soft defrag -
Auslogics seems a lot quicker program, although maybe not a thorough as M/soft inbuilt -

Ccleaner removes some of the things that MS would leave there deliberately, as they can be used for things such as advanced diagnostics and certain indexing features. Ccleaner also removes some of the logs and temp files created in custom directories by third party programs.

Auslogics isn't nearly as effective sad.gif . Most of the faster defraggers aren't. Aside from the built in defrag, the only other one I'd really recommend is O&O, which unfortunately isn't free, however they do have a free trial so you can test it out.

Removed Auslogics version and I have replaced it with the latest Piriform Defraggler - Slower and deeper defrag - Almost seems like early Windows defraggers -
I only need to use it because the 'inbuilt' one seems to have a 'file' missing and rarely gets past 3% then jams ?? I have used all the usual (Windows restore/repair etc.) but it still has a problem -
