Hi wisdomatical, welcome to the Malwarebytes' HJT Forum

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Windows Live OneCare or McAfee.

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {95BBF92A-F063-4E0A-9E1F-6662C281F8AA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGwWmLF.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

After that, Reboot

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Thank you for your quick reply.
I uninstalled Mcafee.
I ran RSIT. I thought I ran it too quickly after reboot because I recieved errors about the registry not being available so I ran it again. It only produced the single log below. Please let me know if I need do something different.

I ran combofix and let it reboot. When it rebooted, it froze at the desktop. No icons, no windows taskbar, nothing but background and mouse pointer. Mouse is movable. No disk activity.

What should I do?

Thanks,
Cliff
SpySentinel
Hi Cliff,

Try a reboot again, and see if ComboFix runs.
wisdomatical
I was able to do a crtl-del and gracefully shut down. It did the same thing. I can do a crtl-del and see that processes are loaded. Please advise.

Thank you,
Cliff

I am not able to do anything on the infected computer. I do not have anything but a mouse pointer...

Please advise.

Thank you,
Cliff
SpySentinel
Do you have another computer you can use to download the tools with, then use a flash drive to run the tools on the infected computer?

If so, try using it to run ComboFix on as well as my other fix.
wisdomatical
Yes, I am on my other computer right now. The infected computer is in a state where I do not have the ability, or do not know how, to run any programs. All that is available is the task manager, no other icons on the desktop or windows task bar at the bottom of the screen, just a blank background with the mouse pointer.

Cliff
SpySentinel
Ok,try this.

Use either a flash drive or Blank CD, then install comboFix onto it. Go to your infected computer and follow my instructions for running combofix.
wisdomatical
I am somewhat technical, but you have stumped me. If I do not have a GUI interface to work with, how do I get to the other drives?

Thank you for your patience and help,
Cliff
SpySentinel
Sorry, I must have misunderstood you.

You can't access anything on your Infected computer, there is just a mouse point and the task manager?
wisdomatical
Correct. If I press ctrl-alt-del I can get to the task manager, but that is it...
wisdomatical
Should I try to boot in safe-mode to see if combofix will finish?
SpySentinel
Can you boot into safe mode?

If so, once you get into safe mode and windows boots up, navigate to C:\ComboFix and there should be a log that was produced by ComboFix.

If there is not a log, let me know.

How to boot into safe mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
wisdomatical
Safe mode did the same thing. Any suggestions?

How late will you be on the forum today?

Thank you,
Cliff
wisdomatical
I was able to run HJT from the task manager. Here is the log. I could not find the log for combofix in the C:\combofix directory.

Can you run ComboFix from the taskmanager?
wisdomatical
Is it ok in safe mode or should I go back to normal boot?
SpySentinel
If you can get ComboFix to run in Normal Mode go ahead and run it there, but if not, try running it in safe mode.
wisdomatical
In safe mode it is saying that I do not have recovery console loaded, I thought I did. it wants to install it, is that ok?
SpySentinel
Yes that's ok. if it fails to install it, but gives a log, thats fine post the log here.
wisdomatical
Combofix ran ok in safe mode, rebooted to normal mode and is now creating a log!!! Yea!

I would like to finish this if possible.
How late will you be on the forum?
Will you be available over the weekend?

I will post the log when it is finished.

Thanks,
Cliff

Glad to hear ComboFix worked.

QUOTE
How late will you be on the forum?
Will you be available over the weekend?

Yes I will be on over the weekend, during the nights mostly.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

It is running great. Do you think we got it all?

I have not been using it because I was waiting to make sure we were finished as to not cause any additional problems. I purchased norton 2009. Is it ok to install it now?

Thank you for all of your help,
Cliff

Looks like we got it all, but to make sure,

Please run random's system information tool (RSIT) and post the log.

Also, before you install Norton Internet Security 2009, make sure you remove McAfee.

Looks like we just have to clean up McAfee off your computer since you have Norton now.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    CODE
    :processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Program Files\McAfee

    :commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Now for some cleanup..
Please download OTCleanIt and save it to Desktop.
  • Please make sure you are connecting to the Internet
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  3. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  4. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  5. Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

  6. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

  • McAfee Site Advisor <= McAfee Site Advisor protects your browser against malicious sites and warns you when you go to one.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

By the way. I have another computer that has a slower internet speedtest results that other computers connected to the same network. Nothing appears to be wrong except it is just slower. I have compared settings i.e. MTU, TCP settings, and everything appears to be the same. I have run all of the virus tools and it appears clean. Where do you suggest I look for advice on getting this fixed?

Thank you,
Cliff
