Full Version: All updates for Office 2003 Fail
Malwarebytes Forum > Computer Help > PC Help

I have my updates set to install when I turn my computer off, but by now I know better than to trust my computer will successfully install all of 'em. This time it did good; installed 8 out of 9. But, the one it didn't was another Office 2003 update. (Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB959995)) And I know better than now to try and manually do it myself--it'll just error.

I'm wondering why the updates for Office 2003 never work; could someone tell me why?

My virus protection (avast) or firewall (online armor) shouldn't be on when my computer is updating, so that shouldn't be an issue. And I don't ever use Office 2003 (or any other Microsoft thing for that matter since we lost the disk for Word and I use Jarte instead). So, so long as continue not using Office 2003, will I be ok? 'Cause I can't remove the Microsoft Works components can I?
Lunora
Oh, and both my Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office say 'Re-install' at the bottom of the programs list when you hover over 'em. And none of the stuff works in Office ^^; *tried powerpoint to see* All of 'em say install.
exile360
Wow, this is like the third or fourth time you've had issues with updates. I suspect something is seriously hosed on your system. Though troubleshooting further might fix it, it's doubtful (considering all the steps we went through before). It might be time to throw in the towel and back all your needed stuff up and reload the OS.
Lunora
Actually, when I did that that's when all my microsoft stuff poofed. And my wireless ^^; Everything else works fine...just not my microsoft works/office. I think the wipe deleted 'em.

And it's only the updates applied to Microsoft Works/Office. All the rest install fine =3
exile360
OK, I think I get it now. With OEM PC's (meaning ones you didn't build yourself) they come with (usually a trial) of Office and they also include Works, but they need to be installed first. To do that, start one of Office's programs (Word, Outlook or whatever) and it will ask you for the product key. If you purchased the full version you'll need to put the key in, if not then it was most likely a trial version. For Works it is the same except you should have a full product key since that's the one they usually include for free, you just need to track down the discs and documentation that came with the PC to get the product key for MS Works.
Lunora
I think we only have the disc for MS Word.

Quick Question; what is inkobj.dll? Does it need to auto-run? I googled it and it said it's for a tablet--but I don't have a tablet. blink.gif
exile360
Yeah, it's tablet related. What are you using to look at autorun files? Sysinternals Autoruns or what? Also, if you're in Vista (which I seem to recall that's what you were using), you can disable the Tablet service by clicking the Start Orb and selecting Run and typing or copy/pasting "services.msc" without the quotes. Just find the Tablet PC service and double-click it, then select the startup type drop down box and select "disabled" and then click on the Stop button on the bottom.
Lunora
Online Armor dry.gif It loves to tell me anything and everything. wacko.gif And then I spend days trying to figure out which thing is trying to auto-run on my compy and whether to tell Online Armor to block it or what not. wacko.gif

Nawps. Not a Vista (the compy...I uh...ruined was...but not this one). Windows XP.
exile360
Hmm, then since it's just a dll file and not a service or executable, I'd just leave it alone and let it do what it does. Any other issues so far, or is everything else going ok?
Lunora
No issues on my compy =3 Its as fit as a fiddle--minus the old age part. I wish I could say the same for my grams compy, but that's a different story in a different thread.

Can I remove the Microsoft Office/Works files since they aren't installed on my compy? Or would that mess my computer up?
exile360
Yes, you can safely remove them smile.gif .
Lunora
Ok smile.gif I will do so. That way there's less useless stuff on my compy! I have a lot of Microsoft stuff in here, like Microsoft framework .net , etc. Would that delete with it? Or should I only remove the ones that specifically say 'Microsoft Works' and 'Microsoft Office'?

Quick Question; when MBAM 'successfully quarantines and removes' something, does that mean you can delete it from the quarantine? And that its not gonna pop up again? What is 'c:\Programs Files\ComPlus Applications'? Thats the thing MBAM found in a recent scan. It said it quarantined it and I didn't find it in my Program Files...but still...

Quick Question 2; If another compy is infected, can it get your laptop infected if you use a lan cable from it?

Quick Question 3; If I dont use a program or have it on my compy anymore can I delete its files in the Program Files? (Zone Labs -> Zone Alarm, Toni Arts -> Easy cleaner are two of such things)

O_o Zone labs/alarm told me access restricted for a .dll when I tried to delete it (''Cannot delete zlavscan.dll: access is denied!') But the divx and Toni Arts -> Easy cleaner let me delete em =3
exile360
  • Yes, just remove the stuff that specifically says Works and Office and leave the other stuff alone.
  • As far as MBAM's quarantine, as long as you're sure it's not a false positive (you can post in the False Positives area if you suspect it is) then you can delete it from quarantine and will receive no further comments from MBAM about it.
  • As far as the LAN cable goes, if you mean connecting them both to the same router at the same time (wireless or wired) then yes, it's possible for it to infect your PC over the network, if you mean simply switching the cable from one computer to another (if you only have say a cable modem or DSL modem) then no, it won't infect your PC even if the other one was infected, cables don't store data from previous connections, so there could be no latent infection in the cable itself. There are however certain infections (like certain variants of the zlob family) that can infect a router, but only in the sense that they make the router redirect the sites that all computers that connect to it can go to (like blocking certain sites or redirecting to malicious sites), but such cases are rare and as long as you have a password set up for accessing the router itself to change it's settings (which can usually be found by entering 192.168.1.1 into your web browser) then it would block an infection like zlob from being able to alter it.
  • For deleting the folders in program files, yes you can delete the leftover folders and if you have removed Zone Alarm already and want to delete that .dll file you can go to the More Tools tab and use FileASSASSIN to delete it.

I hope I've adequately answered your questions. If you need anything else just let us know smile.gif .
Lunora
Ok =3

I don't think its a false positive cause it said it quarantined and removed it and there is no folder sitting there to the contrary =3

We have a wireless router that doesnt really work--we use a lan cable from it. So your saying my gram's infected computer could be getting mine and my dad's computer infected while I'm waiting for someone to reply to my thread in the Malware Removal board? ohmy.gif (It's been a day...) And our router has a passie...that none of us can remember >.> So dad won't replace it and tells us to use lan cables instead. But, if my computer got infected avast would tell me like it told us on Grams computer, right?
exile360
Potentially, yes. It would be advisable to keep your computers off of that router if the other one is on it and when you need to get it online (for getting help with it etc), only connect the infected one then. If you must have them online together, then make sure both clean PC's have a firewall and that it's set very high (even blocking file and printer sharing over the network) until you get the all clear that the infected PC is clean. Most infections won't spread that way, but there are many that do, so you can ask the helper assisting you if there seems to be such an infection on that system that would spread through a network.
Lunora
I have hers turned off while waiting for help. I'd ask the helper...but no one is helping ^^; We don't share files or printers. The most we do is if we need to print something put it on a harddrive and plug it in to her comp. So should we be good then? (Well aside from her computer)

What about Microsoft Office OneNote 2003? (Or will it remove when I remove the rest of the Microsoft Office?)
exile360
You probably have to remove OneNote seperately (but you'll find out by checking if it's still there after uninstalling the rest of Office). As far as file and printer sharing, even though you don't share, the services still run by default which means you'd still be vulnerable. To change that, go to the Control Panel and open Network and Internet Connections and go to the Network Connections folder. Right click on your Local Area Connection and/or your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties. Uncheck the option next to File and Printer Sharing. You'll want to do this on both of the clean computers. Once your other system is clean you can check that box again if you'd like in case you ever need it. Just for reference, I'm not on a network and just have the one PC so I leave sharing disabled on my system.
Lunora
I did that for both the Wireless and Local Area Connection; at least for my compy. I have to wait until dad gets home to do so on his. happy.gif And Im removing Onenote now.

Another quick question, I've kinda looked all over malwarebytes, but I haven't seen anything that really tells you what to do if one of your thread goes unreplied too. Is there a minimum for how many days before you can repost it? Or are you supposed to not repost it at all?
exile360
It's better if you don't repost it and if you don't reply to your own topic because the helpers look for ones with 0 replies because if there are replies they often assume another helper already replied to you.
Lunora
I had a member PM me that, and told me to PM an Adminstrator about it to let them know no ones replied to my topic--cause until yesterday I forgot I could modify my posts ^^;--so I PM'd AdvancedSetup to let him know all 4 posts were me...but I posted the thread on the 20th (around 4:30 it'll be two days since I posted the issues) and I haven't gotten a single reply. unsure.gif
exile360
You will don't worry. AdvancedSetup is the right guy to talk to because he handles most of the threads in there.
Lunora
Hard not to worry ^^; I know he's great but still two days is forever wacko.gif (especially when other people have gotten replies in less than half a day)
exile360
They usually don't get replies that fast, but the fact that you replied to your own probably delayed it a bit. I'm sure once he or one of the others breaks free from some of the other topics they're working you'll get the help you need. Unfortunately it's a very busy forum and there's only a few helpers.
Lunora
Yea I know ._. I guess just having her computer infected makes me worry more. Especially when everyones demanding I fix it and asking why it isn't fixed already. x.x; (It shouldn't take a week for someone to reply....right??)

Anyhoo, and thankies for all your help! wub.gif
exile360
Nope, it shouldn't take a week (and hopefully it won't wink.gif ). You're very welcome smile.gif . Hopefully all of your PC troubles will be over soon.
