Help, MalwareBytes finds a Registry Key Trojan (Trojan.BHO.H) and appears to remove it. However, it keeps re-appearing. I've searched several forums on the internet and haven't seen anything that I've felt comfortable with.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.37
Database version: 2273
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion and program version is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • In case you can't update the database via the update option, please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

To get a HijackThislog,

* Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi,

Please uninstall the Ask Toolbar / Ask Searchbar via software > add&remove programs. This because this toolbar is not recommended.
The other ones that Malwarebytes found can be ignored since those entries are set by Norton in your case. smile.gif

How are things now?
bgriffin184
Basically, I'm experiencing a pop up that tells me that my firewall is disabled and something else that I can't remember at the moment. The pop up looks as if it's generated by the Norton (Symantec) software. However, I cannot get rid of the pop up. It keeps coming up regardless of how I close it. I'm guessing that Norton would not create something so annoying. Even after running MBAM and disinfenting, it immediately pops up. This was true even after completing the MBAM database update as you suggested.

Oh, also, the Norton software is old and out of date.
miekiemoes
Yes, that's indeed caused by your Norton and I know its extremely annoying.
So please enable the firewall in your Norton Internet Security.
I don't know if you purchased Norton Internet Security though. Because that may also explain why it acts so annoying in case you didn't purchase.
In that case you need to purchase it or uninstall NIS and install another Antivirus and enable your Windows Firewall.
bgriffin184
Ok. I've uninstalled Norton completely. The pop up is gone....finally! I checked and my firewall is active (windows). I have installed differnent anti virus software scanned and cleaned all found infections. The only thing I wasn't able to do was to delete the Ask Tool bar /Search bar. When I go through the control panel and use the add/remove programs I receive the following message:

"Error Loading C:\PROGRA~1\AskBar\bar\1.bin\Ashbar.dll The specified module could not be found"
miekiemoes
Hi,

Isn't there any other reference of the Ask Toolbar in Add & remove programs? Because according to your HijackThislog, it's another version than the one you are mentioning:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0579B4B6-0293-4d73-B02D-5EBB0BA0F0A2} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A2SRCHAS.DLL
O2 - BHO: Ask Search Assistant BHO - {0579B4B1-0293-4d73-B02D-5EBB0BA0F0A2} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A2SRCHAS.DLL

If not, then check above entries in HijackThis and click the Fix checked button below. Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click "Fix checked".
Then reboot.

After reboot, navigate to and delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\AskSBar
C:\Program Files\AskBar

Then, Update your Sun Java, because previous versions are vulnerable:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:
Let me know in your next reply how things are now.
bgriffin184
Everything is working correctly now. Thanks for your help
miekiemoes
Glad I could help. smile.gif

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
