Earlier today I ran a quick scan to get rid of one of those fake anti virus programs. Anyway, long story short after Malwarebytes got rid of it the "Malwarebytes Anti-malware (reboot)" entry appeared and I've rebooted several times only to find that, that entry is still there.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this might be?

I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

Hi Missing it is currently being investigated. Do you have the MBAM logs for the system that you can post please.

This is the quick scan I was talking about.

I've since run one more scan and came up clean.

Is this what you wanted?
AdvancedSetup
Yes, but now update MBAM and run one more quick scan and post back that log please. Thanks. If this goes any further though and we need to do more then I'll have to move your post to the HJT forum.
Missing
I have the latest database version so it's not letting me update at the moment.
AdvancedSetup
I'm sorry yes, you're correct. 2834 is the latest. Please reboot your PC and do a NEW Quick Scan and post back that new log.
Missing
This is the scan I ran after the reboot.

So the entry still shows for the reboot script in your registry run ?
Missing
Yes it does.
AdvancedSetup
Do you feel comfortable removing it with Regedit on your own?

If not let me know and I can write you a command line to remove it.

Back up your registry with ERUNT
  • Download ERUNT from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click erunt-setup.exe to install the program
  • Follow the prompts, and then uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen.
  • At the next screen, uncheck Show documentation and check Launch ERUNT
  • If ERUNT doesnt start by itself, launch it from the desktop shortcut.
  • At the configuration screen, make sure all 3 checkboxes are checked
  • Click Ok to run the backup process
    Note:
The backups can be restored from here:
    C:\windows\ERDNT\<todays date>\ERDNT.exe

Missing
Is removing the entry going to cause anything? Can it cause any trouble? would be a better question.

I'm not all that comfortable doing it myself, would you mind helping me?

Thanks and sorry for my ignorance on the matter.
Missing
I didn't know how to edit my previous post.

So I think that I should also say that this incident deleted all of my restore points or ccleaner says there's none are left.
AdvancedSetup
It's possible that the Malware did remove or damage your Restore Points but we did not remove them.

Please run a new HJT log for me so that I can review it.

Missing
Oh no, I didn't mean to say that you removed them. I'm sure it was the malware, that's what I meant to say.

Here's my log.

Status update.

My computer is running as it normally was. Even seems a bit faster but the entry is still there even after updating and scanning again.

Anyway the real reason I'm posting is because I've been wondering if it's ok to remove ad-aware seeing as it's the slowest start up.

If you wonder about Norton AND avast, Norton is inactive, has been for a while, I'm not removing it because the last time I did it caused all kinds of problems and forced me to reformat.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

Then from within Internet Explorer go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and click on the RESET button and then quit and restart Internet Explorer.

STEP 02
You have the AIM toolbar, the ASK toolbar, the Winamp toolbar, the Google toolbar, the Norton toolbar.
I doubt you really need or use these and I would recommend removing all of them and if you want one of them then go get the latest version and install it.
You have both Symantec, and Norton components that are not deactivated and do slow down your system and intefere with it.

Let's do a little more cleanup and then we'll use some tools, methods for backup and then use an approved tool for removing the Symantec/Norton stuff.

STEP 03
Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

STEP 04
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

  3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  5. Close any open browsers.
  6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
  7. Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  8. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  9. Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.

To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."

If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..
This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...

How do I disable everything you wanted me to disable?

Also, I'm sorry but I may not be able to perform all of these things until Wednesday. Is that ok?
Missing
Never mind on that. The link you provided tells me how, thanks.

Still might not be able to perform these things until Wednesday though.
Missing
Sorry for the triple post and sorry if I seem pushy. My Norton360 is expired so it's not letting me open the settings window. Do I even have to disable norton? seeing as it's expired in the first place.
AdvancedSetup
It depends on if it tries to stop Combofix from running or not.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Well if you want a good free Anti-Virus then you may want to consider removing Symantec and using Avira which many users seem to like much better.
Missing
Alright, I was able to these things tonight.

However it's not letting me attach the logs so I'll just go ahead and paste them if that's ok.

This is my JavaRa log.

While running combofix it prompted me to install windows recovery console, is that normal?

I do want to get rid of Symantec/Norton, but the last time I tried to unistall it half the time it wouldn't even let me login to my user account so I was forced to reformat. I never saought help though.

Thanks for your help so far!
AdvancedSetup
STEP 01

STEP 02
Click on START - RUN and type in REGEDIT and hit Ok
Then one by one browse down the Registry tree and find the following keys and then highlight them and right click over them
and choose PERMISSIONS, make sure Administrators has a check mark in it and that below it is checked for FULL CONTROL, then click on the
ADVANCED button and then the OWNER tab and highlight Administrators Group and place a check mark in the
"Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" box. Then click OK, OK

I found the first registry key and when I tried to follow the instructions you gave me I got this.

Also, I removed all java in the previous set of instructions.
AdvancedSetup
Continue with the process in the Registry and ignore the error for now.

HJT log indicated that you did not run it properly or something or it was an old log because old java was still there.
Missing
All registry keys gave me the same error but they all have the full control box checked off.

I can't find bonjour on the list of installed programs and the only thing viewpoint I see is Viewpoint Media Player. Lavasoft is prompting me to restart my computer now. Do I continue anyway or do I restart and then continue? I'll run JavaRa again after this, just in case.
AdvancedSetup
Yes, restart the computer every time you're asked to restart please.
Missing
Alright I restarted my computer. There's still the I can't find bonjour or viewpoint manager service problem, the only thing I find is "viewpoint media player" do you want me to just move on and continue with the rest of the steps?

Thank you for your patience with me.
AdvancedSetup
Bonjour is part of your iPod software and may have some other name in front of it. Yes remove the Viewpoint Media Player.
Then keep doing all the other steps please.
Missing
I don't have an ipod or any ipod related software, that I know of.

by the way, I found C:\WINDOWS\java do I delete that?

Please remove the following in the order provided and reboot if requested

Vuze
Norton Confidential Core
Norton 360 HTMLHelp
Norton 360 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton 360
Symantec Real Time Storage Protection Component
Symantec Technical Support Controls
LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation)

Then download and run this Symantec Norton Removal tool and use it to finish removing Symantec/Norton products.
www.symantec.com/nrt/

Missing
When I try to remove vuze I get this.

and the only Norton/Symantec related items on there are:

Norton 360 (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation)
AdvancedSetup
Ignore Vuze then for now. Then choose just the Norton 360 and we'll remove the other Symantec stuff in a minute.

When done with this please post a NEW HJT log.
Missing
Remove LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation) as well?
AdvancedSetup
No, that has to be one of the last. Leave it for now.

Then this tool will help us to finish cleaning up Symantec/Norton software. www.symantec.com/nrt/
Missing
So I'm assuming that I'm not to download this until you tell me to do so, correct?

www.symantec.com/nrt/
AdvancedSetup
You can download it but don't run it until you remove the Norton 360 from the Add/Remove and reboot.
Then you can run it.
Missing
I think I confused myself, haha. I finish uninstalling (which is doing that right now), reboot, run that tool, and THEN give you a new hjt log?
AdvancedSetup
Yes, correct.

Did you run the other stuff like DISK CHECK and IP RESET?

Steps 8, 9 from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.p...st&p=131597
Missing
In step 8 and 9? Yes I did. It's done uninstalling, will reboot now.
