OK. Wife's PC is infected with Windows Police Pro... She did some things, but I'm not sure what, other than delete the program files, maybe try to uninstall it, and now her PC is fubar.

Condition of PC:
Normal boot of Windows XP (SP 3) gets you to login screen, to the wallpaper only. No bars, no icons.
Can ctrl+alt-del to get to task manager and whack two *.exe files that are malicious- an a.exe and a svchast.exe
However, you can't run a new task- it will give a "no permissions" error.

You can do safe mode and get to a black screen and that's it- you can start task manager w/ ctrl+alt+delete. And that is how I copied malwarebytes to the PC from a flash drive. I did the install, and it could not update (732 error), and it will quick scan for about 2 seconds then crash (I think)- task manager shows the process winlogon still running, but no CPU use, etc.

I'm posting from my computer, which isn't infected.

MrPatience
One more thing, in safe mode, the two mal *.exe's are not running.
MrPatience
And... After reading some other threads here, it would probably be helpful to know more about the Windows the infected PC is running:

It is Windows XP Home- more specifically Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206- 1234: Service Pack 3
MrPatience
OK. I managed to run ComboFix off the flash drive on the infected PC in Safe Mode... It detected a rootkit, rebooted... Then it did it's deal and there was an infection that it fixed... Here is that log:

Still no internet. No explorer.exe access.

However, I was able to run m-bytes in safe mode- I did a quick scan. Here is that log.

MrPatience
OK... Waited 48 hours for help. Now I am bumping...

I'd rather not reformat the HDD. But, it could be a quicker solution at this point.
AdvancedSetup
Could be quicker and cleaner.... but let me give it a look over and get back to you in a few.
AdvancedSetup
If you're not getting a desktop then how are you running these scans?

STEP 01
Disable the Spybot Tea Timer - DO NOT continue until you've disabled the Tea Timer

Disable Teatimer
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

STEP 02
Please download Avenger 2.0 from here
Open and copy the program file avenger.exe to your Desktop then double click to start it.

Copy and paste the following text from the code box below into the main window of Avenger.
CODE
Files to move:

OK. Still no desktop (just wallpaper).

Tried running the requested commands after completing Avenger through task manager, but still no desktop, task bar, start button, systray, etc...

Tried running explorer.exe through task manager, just for a lark- no dice. Still do not have "appropriate permissions".

Bummer.

What next?

Please download to your Desktop: Dr.Web CureIt
  • After the file has downloaded, disable your current Anti-Virus and disconnect from the Internet
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file, then click the Start button, then the OK button to perform an Express Scan.
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click on the Complete scan radio button.
  • Then click on the Settings menu on top, the select Change Settings or press the F9 key. You can also change the Language
  • Choose the Scanning tab and I recomend leaving the Heuristic analysis enabled (this can lead to False Positives though)
  • On the File types tab ensure you select All files
  • Click on the Actions tab and set the following:
    • Objects Infected objects = Cure, Incurable objects = Move, Suspicious objects = Report
    • Infected packages Archive = Move, E-mails = Report, Containers = Move
    • Malware Adware = Move, Dialers = Move, Jokes = Move, Riskware = Move, Hacktools = Move
    • Do not change the Rename extension - default is: #??
    • Leave the default save path for Moved files here: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\
    • Leave prompt on Action checked
  • On the Log file tab leave the Log to file checked.
  • Leave the log file path alone: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\CureIt.log
  • Log mode = Append
  • Encoding = ANSI
  • Details Leave Names of file packers and Statistics checked.
  • Limit log file size = 2048 KB and leave the check mark on the Maximum log file size.
  • On the General tab leave the Scan Priority on High
  • Click the Apply button at the bottom, and then the OK button.
  • On the right side under the Dr Web Anti-Virus Logo you will see 3 little buttons. Click the left VCR style Start button.
  • In this mode it will scan Boot sectors of all disks, All removable media, and all local drives
  • The more files and folders you have the longer the scan will take. On large drives it can take hours to complete.
  • When the Cure option is selected, an additional context menu will open. Select the necessary action of the program, if the curing fails.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the files.
  • This will move it to the %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\ folder if it can't be cured. (in this case we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your Desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously to your Desktop in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

MrPatience
I'm going to folloe these directions. However, I want to point something out- you keep mentioning that I can disable my software by clicking on an icon in the system tray- I don't have one. You mention a clean task bar- I don't have that, either.

When I am running things, or getting into AVG to disable it- I have to use the "New Task" function through the Task Manager.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I thought you should know.
AdvancedSetup
Okay please try the following.

In the Task Manager see if you can run MSCONFIG and set ALL SERVICES to Enabled.
Try to set to NORMAL STARTUP and restart as required.

Try to run this on the system as well.

Please download and run these tools which are designed to restore some standard policy settings. They are not harmful.
    VArestorepolicies.INF
  • Download this INF repair file from here: VArestorepolicies.zip by MS-MVP Miekiemoes
  • Unzip or open the file VArestorepolicies.zip
  • Open the folder VArestorepolicies and Right-click the file inside, VArestorepolicies.INF and choose Install
    FixPolicies.exe
  • Download this self-extracting ZIP archive from here: FixPolicies.exe by MS-MVP Bill Castner and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close
  • These fixes may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes on your next startup. You can safely run these utilities again.

AdvancedSetup
Is this XP Home or Professional version?

Please try to run this

Click on START - RUN and type in SIGVERIF and click OK
This is a Microsoft File Signature Verification program that will check some file status for us.
  • Click on the START button and let it run.
  • It will popup a box when it's done to show the status, you can close that box.
  • Close the File Signature Verification application.
  • Find and attach the file C:\WINDOWS\SIGVERIF.TXT to your reply.
  • DO NOT post the log directly into your reply, attach the file please.

Also... XP Home. No Start button, when you give me commands, I'm running them through task manager.

Also did this... Not sure if the command prompt window ever opened. But, I've got the files here and can run them again.

Finally, one more thing-- maybe it helps. My wife took this PC to here work (it's County Gov't- probably secure when she did it, probably little updating since). There appear to be OS files from both Windows XP Home AND Windows NT on here- if you hadn't figured that out by viewing the logs.
AdvancedSetup
I'm looking to see if we can get one of these tools to replace that explorer.exe file which I think is part of the main issue here.

Okay, please check your Private Messages

Okay since you're only running from Task Manager try the following.

Click on File -> New Task (run) and type in NOTEPAD and hit OK
Then write down exactly what it says below in the code box and save the file as c:\documents and settings\HPH\Desktop\CFSCRIPT.TXT
Then from Task Manager run the following. File -> New Task (run) and type in:
"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Combo-Fix.exe" "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CFSCRIPT.TXT" and hit the OK
CODE

MrPatience
Also, One last FYI before I have to disappear for a few hours- while ComboFix was generating it's log, Windows Firewall blocked "some features of Logitech Mouse Updater" and prompted me- I chose "continue blocking".

Don't know if that's helpful or not- just trying to give a complete report.

I know nothing about programming and little about computers, but... THIS looks like bad news:

QUOTE
scanning hidden files ...

c:\windows\TEMP\TMP0000001797D7DACEBD3A0B16 524288 bytes executable
AdvancedSetup
STEP 01
Open your CFScript.txt file on your desktop and remove the current contents and add this
CODE
KILLALL::
File::
c:\windows\TEMP\TMP0000001797D7DACEBD3A0B16
c:\docume~1\HPH\LOCALS~1\Temp\IadHide5.dll

Then drag and drop it onto Combofix and let it run and reboot if needed.

STEP 02
Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.

STEP 03
Download DDS and save it to your desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

Disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, the DDS.txt will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt

STEP 04
Please temporarily disable your current Anti-Virus in order to run this Online AV scanner.
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

MrPatience

Well at this time your computer does not appear to be infected anymore.

Please download the following program to your Desktop and run it. OTC.exe
When prompted to reboot your computer please allow it to.

Then please check for updates to the following programs
Adobe Acrobat 5.0
Adobe Reader 7.1.0

Please uninstall or update the following programs
Safari
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Then run the following.

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.
Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.
Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.
Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on START > RUN > and type in %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and click OK
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "Create".
  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use the Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr.exe
  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
  • On the Disk Cleanup tab, if the System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores entry is available remove them also.
  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.

Give me a little bit... Was offline for a while. Will follow up now.

OK. I did all that. When I ran AVG the first time, it came back with this:

"C:\Documents and Settings\HPH\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\A0083105.exe";"Trojan horse Generic14.BJKL";"Moved to Virus Vault"
"C:\System Volume Information\_restore{1D1D6F93-1B0C-4060-8D79-09274A81BD2A}\RP844\A0084656.exe";"Trojan horse Generic14.BJKL";"Moved to Virus Vault"

Now, on scan number two, it is coming back with this:

"C:\Documents and Settings\HPH\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\msa.exe.vir";"Trojan horse Generic14.BJKL";"Moved to Virus Vault"

Maybe someone can explain why these files are never deleted and overwritten... Perhaps it's no problem? I see them in other logs.

These files have already been neutralized and moved to quarantine by Dr Web.

You can delete the entire Dr Web folder including the quarantine files now.
You can also uninstall the NOD32 AV scanner now.

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.
Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.
