I appear to have a similar issue to other recent users with the MBAM.exe. I've tried reinstalling and changing the executable name and it did not work. Next is the log of the hijack I just ran. Any help appreciated!

After reading some other threads, I went to another pc in my house that did not have the issue, updated malwarebytes, and copied mbam.exe to a flash drive. Renamed the executable fix.exe and copied it to the malwarebytes folder (where mbam.exe normally resides) on the infected machine. Ran fix.exe and it ran through to completion. There were 5 entries that were not removed prior to reboot. Rebooted and ran again, same 5 files still there. Here is the mbam log from the run:

Glad it helped. My machine appears to be in the same state as yours. Still running sluggish. I'm hoping one of the admins here will let us know what we can do to finish cleaning this mess up!

I tried the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool last night, and this trojan even deletes the exe file from it (mrt.exe). I tried running it from a CD, and it actually starts the scan but then stops almost immediately.

Not knowing quite enough about computers, I can't figure out how to do the same trick with the mbam.exe file (changing the name to fix.exe). I can't find it in the program files. How can I do this?

Or how ELSE can I get rid of this thing?

I'm not sure if this will help you, I had the same problem and found instructions on a website help forum.

What I had to do, and it was difficult, was delete MBAM and then reinstall it. You'll need to have the folder where it is going to install the MalwareBytes program open (i.e. Program Files), find the MalwareBytes folder, open it, copy the MBAM.exe file, paste it to your desktop, and you'll only have a few seconds because as soon as the installation is complete the .exe file gets deleted. Then you cut and paste the .exe from your desktop back into the folder. The program worked.

It took me several attempts to do this and found that I could succeed by using the "refresh" command in in the list of folders, typing "M A L" to quickly jump to the new MalwareBytes folder, open it, click on the .exe, CTRL-C to copy.....at that point you beat the clock.

I know this might sound confusing, good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I got MBAM to run per Chris's tip, and it finds several instances of Vundo, but everytime I restart, it is still there (duplicating from the registry?). I have been trying the Microsoft tool but can't get it to run either, nor will several other antivirus programs. This trojan stops everything.

We need to know what ELSE to do besides MBAM, as it doesn't seem to get it all.

Kathy, I am struggling with my machine getting re-infected too....so I dont' have the answer.
What I have done that has worked is:
a. started my machine in safe mode
b. run combofix to get my machine back up and running
c. run malwarebytes to remove vundo / trojan horse

The problem I have had is that they keep returning, so I have posted a help topic myself. But what I have done has given me use of my machine and if happens again I know what to do.

By the way, my PC would not start in safe mode so I chose one of the other options (something about directory services) and it worked.

I've been having the same problem as you guys have about the mbam.exe file being deleted upon completion of the install. So I needed a clean .exe file and since I don't have another computer in my house I thought I was screwed. I had read on the forums yesterday that there was a way to copy the file during the install process before it becomes corrupted/erased. (funny cause everyone says the file simply vanishes but in my case the file renames to MBAMGUI, which is essentially a ghost file). However this process of copying the file was not explained very well until I read isnadd's post this morning. I just want to say thank you isnadd! MBAM is working now and currently scanning. I'm sure I'm going to run into the same problem of malicious files not being erased upon reboot, but at least the program is working and step 1 is complete. I'll continue to follow this thread to see if these issues can be resolved.

Assault, you're welcome and I'm glad I could help. If you thought my instructions were clear I would hate to see what else you were reading. After I posted it I thought "nobody is going to understand what he heck I'm talking about."

Just an update...

Someone recommended vundofix, but I had tried it 2 nights ago, and it would not run as well. This damn trojan gets to everything. I have not tried it again today, but if anyone has any luck getting it to run, let me know.

Does combofix get rid of vundo?

little bit of an update....MBAM ran through it's scan and there were several Vundo - related issues...got rid of them and rebooted...ran MBAM again and the only thing that showed up was a registry issue : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.

I don't know exactly what the effect this will have on my computer's performance but I'm not having issues with pop-ups, slow downs, or hijacked search results so far. (crossing fingers!!). Anybody have a clue as to what this registry error means?

A quick question to all who have posted here. Are you using the free MBAM or the purchased version? I have been using the free version, and I am wondering if the purchased version would work better. Also, if you are using the purchased version, are you having the same difficulty with the trojan erasing the exe file? Just wondering if downloading the purchased version will be more of the same.

I have tried running MBAM over and over, but it finds the same vundo trojans every single time.

no..i am using the free version. The free version provides as thourough a scan as the paid version and removes the items in question. The paid version also acts to PREVENT such infections from occuring (something I wish my paid McAfee subs. would do!!!!). Along with that there are also other ameneties such as scheduled scans and auto updates. But as far as scanning and removing they are the same.

Hopefully my final update:

I ran MBAM over and over, and it continued to find trojans every time I restarted in safe mode. I finally restarted with a regular boot, and when I went back to the computer again, Norton had run and asked for a restart. When I restarted, I ran vundofix (which would not run 2 nights ago), and it found no vundo trojans or anything else. I then was able to run the Microsoft tool, and it found nothing as well. Everything seems to be fine now...no popups and e-mail access okay.

I really have no idea what worked, but I thought I would pass this on. Good luck to everyone.

You are probably not getting help because the forum administrators look at the total # of posts within a message to tell if it is being addressed (as per FAQ). Because you have posted back and forth with other people, they probably assume someone is helping you. I would suggest you start a new thread for just yourself. Just my 2 cents.
