Full Version: Faught Virus - Can you help confirm it's gone?
Malwarebytes Forum > Computer Help > Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs
c_man
Hi, I've somehow managed to 'contract' a virus (I think) and am hoping some experts here may be able to help.

After running the recommended programs (MBAM and HiJackThis), there is sign of progress:

Initially my XP desktop was changed to the image notifying me I have a virus and also that pop up window asking me to install the 2008 Anti Virus Software - now the desktop is simply bright blue with no prompt to install 2008 Anti Virus Software.

Before I could not see, [from right-clicking on desktop, selecting Properties], the Desktop and ScreenSaver tabs - but now I can.

Most importantly, MBAM states it will perform a "Delete on reboot." for several files, but this does not seem to function properly, as the files in question are always picked up on a fresh scan (after a reboot). Only now there seems to be a break through, but I'd like some confirmation that the problems have been firefighted!

I've done some reading prior to posting this, so here are my logs, as requested:

Hi AdvancedSetup,

Thanks for the quick response. Here is the first scan below, I'll now move on to performing the second... - though is it required, considering the below scan doesn't bring anything infected up?

...1hr 33mins later, here is the 2nd of the requested logs.

Of the entries that appear in the MALWARE section, only a few appear unknown to me (that is, I have not placed them in their location and do not know their purpose) which are: pskill.exe, wmplayer(3).exe, wmplayer(2).exe, OLDB2.tmp, and the last 3 DLL files. The other entries, I know what they are and to my knowledge, are 'okay' and not troublesome.

All the entires in the SUSPECTS section, I am aware of, and again, have not seemed to be troublesome.

Ok let's clean up some things with HJT.

Run scan only and put a check next to the following items, then click fix.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Reboot the machine.

Do you use a Logitech mouse or keyboard? The lines below are from Logitech if you have that installed, but are not necessary to run at startup if you are not using those features.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Logitech Utility] Logi_MwX.Exe
O4 - Global Startup: Logitech SetPoint.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\SetPoint.exe

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

Your running an outdated and unsafe version of Adobe Acrobat Reader latest version. Or get the alternative faster lighter on resources Foxit PDF Reader and Editor Look at the Downloads tab here or Downloads if you don't want to see the features etc.

Update MBAM run a quick scan post that log and a new HJT log.

Hi JeanInMontana, thanks for the input. I did everything requested in your post, however, the following line does not seem to disappear:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

Everything else seemed to go, and I updated to the latest versions of Java and Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Yes I have Logitech peripherals - whilst Logi_MwX.Exe may not be needed, SetPoint.exe is, as it 'runs'/'drives' my mouse (Logitech G7) and its settings.

From the previous logs, is it fair to conclude that I DID have a virus for sure? (I'm assuming it may have been the AntiVirus2008?)

No you did not have a virus, you had several trojans and adware. It is ok if that line won't go it's not malware. All of the stuff connected to Logitech is needed if your actually using the features they add. The drivers are not installed in those lines. However, it's probably best to leave them alone if your using the features.

Your log clearly shows you did not update Adobe Acrobat Reader
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll <========== The current version is 9 and lower versions are known to be exploitable. Java also doesn't look to be updated. 1.6 update 7 is current.

Your log looks clean. We need to now reset a clean System Restore point. If you don't and you need to use System Restore you will reinfect yourself. Go to Start>Control Panel>System. Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. Then click OK.

Now go to Start>Help and Support > Undo Changes to Your System or System Restore depending on the make of your PC. Click on what ever will open the System Restore box. You will see two options, Choose Create a System Restore Point. Give it a name like Clean Restore Point and today's date. Now if you need to use it you have it.

Many of these infections can be avoided with an added layer of prevention. All recommended programs are free and easy on system resources. You should install them as part of your protection arsenal. Keep MBAM and Spybot Search & Destroy and always immunize SBS&D when you update. You will also need at least one other scanning program Asquared or SuperAntiSpyware are good and there are several other excellent programs with free and paid versions. Read the overviews of what each program below does so you have an understanding of their importance and how to use.

A firewall and antivirus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP and Vista is not sufficient.

Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.

Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.

SpywareBlaster from Javacool Software

WinPatrol by BillPStudios

SiteHound by FireTrust

RogueRemover

hpHosts

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I use and recommend Online Armor Free

Also the full protection of MBAM is offered at a very low price.

Hi,

Thanks for confirming all is okay now.

I have created a restore point, which I can use in future.

Though I didn't quite understand why you reccommend we turn off system restore:

"Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. "

and then turn it back on (which has to be done to create a restore point).

I did it anyway.

Thank you for your time, effort and help, very much appreciated.
JeanInMontana
We create a new restore point because if in the future you were to use one created during the time you were infected you would reinfect yourself. By deleting them all and creating a new clean one you have a good point to use.
