Hi all,
Thanks in advance. Malwarebytes removes but then keeps finding a number of the same files - most consistently, seneka related entries.

Here is the mbam log - panda and hijackthis to follow.

Thanks again

You will want to print out or copy these instructions to Notepad for Safe Mode/offline reference!
These steps are for member cjr2113 only. If you are a lurker, do NOT try this on your system!
If you are not cjr2113 and have a similar problem, do NOT post here; start your own topic

Do not run or start any other programs while these utilities and tools are in use!
Do NOT run any other tools on your own or do any fixes other than what is listed here.
If you have questions, please ask before you do something on your own.
But it is important that you get going on these following steps.

STEP01
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

* Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
* Double-click on the My Computer icon.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* After the new window appears select the View tab.
* Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
* Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
* Press the Apply button and then the OK button and exit My Computer.
* Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

STEP02
    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup215.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts

STEP03
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
This should apply to AVG8:
To disable the Resident Shield, please:
open AVG User Interface
double-click on the Resident Shield
un-tick the option Resident Shield active
save the changes.

STEP04
Please download and run the following file to repair file and registry permissions
fixacl.exe

STEP05
If you have a prior copy of Combofix, delete it now !

Download ComboFix from one of these locations, saving to DESKTOP:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
If your I.E. browser shows a warning message at the top, do a Right-Click on the bar and select Download, saving it to the Desktop.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • If and only if you are prompted to download a new version of Combofix, reply NO .
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Please watch Combofix as it runs, as you may see messages which require your response, or the pressing of OK button.

IF you should see a message like this:

then, be sure to write down fully and also copy that into your next reply here and then await for my response.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
-------------------------------------------------------

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light.
If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

STEP06
IF and only IF the Combofix has worked without exceptions, only then, do the following. IF it has exceptions, then please provide all details and put that in a reply pronto, and STOP, and await my reply.

Only if Combofix has a good finish:
I'm going to have you get and run a special tool. It will hopefully take out most remains of this beast. Keep in mind that not all files I list here will be found on your system; so do not be alarmed. This is a general-type list of typical infectors.

Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below textbox to the clibpboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.

  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard icon, button.
  • :!: Make sure that what appears in Avenger matches exactly what you were asked to Copy/Paste from the Code box above.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • If that is the case, it will force a BSOD on the first reboot. This is normal & expected behaviour.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. Please copy/paste the contents of c:\avenger.txt into your next reply.

Not all the items will be found; so do not worry. Hopefully enough of the rootkit will be removed so that we can continue forward with more cleaning.
If you get a blue screen abort when it reboots, please write down all the information, STOP codes and description.
and then reboot the system again.

Please then reply with a copy of C:\Combofix.txt, C:\Avenger.txt, and a new HijackThis
and advise, How is your system running now and are there still any signs of an infection?

RE-Enable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications.

I deleted the first two files you asked me to delete. I ran the hijack this and followed your instructions. I was not able, however, to find the files that you wanted to zip up and upload. I have attached my gmerlog. thank you for the continued help.

Are you sure you rebooted? What other Security type software do you have running on the system?

Please find all your current GMER logs and delete them. Clear your Internet cache.

Shut down your computer, then restart it. Close ALL open programs.

Then run GMER FULL scan one more time and post that back.
If the size is less than 1K as they have been, you can go ahead and post it directly without attaching it.
cjr2113
i definitely rebooted. The only security software that im aware of is trend micro. Should i be closing the programs in my system tray as well (eg. google desktop, quicktime, etc.)? ill try again.

Thanks, let me review all of your logs and information and get back to you later tonight or tomorrow. Initially it looks like your clean, but your original posts seemed to indicate you might have had something a bit more difficult to remove so I just want to double check and make sure I didn't miss something.
cjr2113
great, thanks again. i'll stay tuned.
cjr2113
i suspect my system is not entirely clean. occasionally, in firefox, when i do a google search and click on one of the entries, i am redirected to various other sites. It does not do it consistently, and I can't figure out the pattern of when it does and doesn't, but something is definitely fishy.
AdvancedSetup
That could just be bad searches returned. Even bad stuff makes it high on the Google search lists at times.

Try deleting all cookies, history, etc.

Please run the following routines.

Please Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • While connected to the Internet, Click on the green CleanUp! button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.
  • It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.
NOW please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process

Then disable your current AV and run this
Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:

If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

When that's done please run this again.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update - (Don't forget to UPDATE!!)
  • When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then RESTART the computer and AFTER the reboot run HJT Do a system scan and save a logfile
The post back NEW MBAM and HJT logs in that order please.

If any of the scanners find something let me know please and post back the MBAM and HJT logs.

regarding the searches: it's not just bad sites returned. Perfectly legitimate sites (cnet for example) will redirect me to some other site. if i hit back on the browser to return to the search entries and then reclick on the same entry, it will take me to the right link. If i retype the same search to try to replicate what happened, however, the same link will not redirect me anywhere. currently working on the dr. web cureit.

Here is the drweb log: I dont know if this format is weird. I just opened the csv file with notepad - if tghere's a better way to do it please let me know.

That's fine for now. That is from the System Restore which we will be cleaning up when done.

Please run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section and on the left side look for the button
labeled Open Uninstall Manger and click on that.

Then look for the button in the middle labeled Save list... and click on that. Save it to your Desktop.
That will save it and open it in Notepad. On the menu in Notepad click on Edit -> Select All -> and then Edit -> Copy
Then paste that entire list back here on your reply please.

Please go into your Control Panel, Add/Remove and remove all of these as they are old and susceptible to Malware attacks.
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java™ 6 Update 11 This one is actually new, but it should be removed to make sure all the other code is removed
Adobe Reader 7.0.8 (current version is 9)

Viewpoint Media Player (this one is not Malware but often labeled Foistware meaning that it was probably put on without your knowledge)

Then after removing the Java and rebooting, Open "My Computer" and browse to the following locations and delete any JAVA folders if they exist
C:\Program Files\Java
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
C:\WINDOWS\Java
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Then run this tool for additional removal of the old Java code.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

The when that is all done run the following again

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

Then update your Anti-Virus again and do another Full Scan. Think you should be about done now.

Then RESTART the computer and AFTER the reboot run HJT Do a system scan and save a logfile
The post back NEW MBAM and HJT logs in that order please.

Please note that I may be out of Town tonight but will try to get back with you this weekend.

Thanks a lot. I'm currently doing the antivirus scan. Mbam found nothing. Do you have any idea what may be causing these redirects? to give you an example, I google searched for "adobe acrobat reader" and I clicked on the first entry which was "get.adobe.com/reader/". Instead i was redirected to the site shown in my attachment. This happens pretty frequently for all sorts of queries. Generally, if i type in a product or something, it will redirect me to a seemingly related site at first. If i click back, and then reclick on the google entry, it will then direct me to the actual site listed. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks again.

The following programs are out of date and have code that is susceptible to attack by Malware
You should uninstall them and if you want or need the program then download the lastest versions from the Website for the program.
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
Adobe Shockwave Player
J2SE Development Kit 5.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Macromedia Flash Player
Macromedia Flash Player 8

Please delete this file: c:\windows\Tasks\yqgpigoc.job

Please edit this file with notepad: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
The only thing that needs to be in there is this:
CODE
127.0.0.1       localhost

Please try to edit the Firefox prefs.js and search.rdf files typically located here with notepad (while FF is closed):
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\random_name.default
The profiles.ini located here will tell you what the active profile is: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla
If you don't find anything like it in there then give this a try also.

QUOTE
Newer versions of Firefox install with a feature called URL Auto complete
that attempt to auto complete find what you might be looking for.

This feature becomes very annoying when you know what you want and try to type it in
and hit enter you often get directed to what Firefox thinks you wanted instead of where
you did want to go.

Here are some config changes you can make to disable this feature and similar features.

Start Firefox and in the address bar type in. about:config and press the enter key.
now you will be presented with a long list of changes that can be made, but you can type in
AUTO or any other keyword for a much smaller filtered list.

The one we're looking for is named: browser.urlbar.autocomplete
and by default it is enabled, you want to disable it.

That alone may not disable it, but setting this one: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 0
should disable that feature all together.

* To make a manual change to preferences, you can visit the URL about:config
* For more information, see http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html#prefs

browser.urlbar.autocomplete set to disable
browser.urlbar.maxRichResults set to 0

This setting is also controlled and saved in your "prefs.js" which is located here
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\randomfilename.default\prefs.js

The setting looks like this in the prefs.js file

User_Pref("Browser.Urlbar.Autocomplete.Enabled", False);
user_pref("browser.urlbar.maxRichResults", 0);

You can visit this link for further information on customizing Firefox
http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html

Close ALL open browsers and chat programs
Then start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.
  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:8080
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

Thanks again. I'm in the process of finding the updates for the programs you mentioned. As for the other processes, I deleted the Java and ran javara. I could not find the file: c:\windows\Tasks\yqgpigoc.job. The hosts file already had the code exactly as you said, so I didn't change anything there. I wasn't exactly sure what I was supposed to be looking for in the prefs.js / search.rdf files, but i didn't see anything that looked weird (but what do i know). I didn't run the url auto complete fix, because I quite like the auto complete function and it doesn't sound like the problem i am having at all.

some googling has returned this, but i wanted to ask for your advice first. Do you know anything about the program GooredFix?

At http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic119267.html, one person posts what soudns like the exact same problem ("... so the only strangeness I'm seeing is that sometimes when I click on a link in a Google search results page, I'm taken not to the URL I clicked but to an ad. For example, a search of "cbs nhl scoreboard" offers up a link to sportsline.c-m/nhl but when I click on it I am instead directed to ad1.doubleclicker.n-t/c.php?u-l=h--p%3A%2F%2Fsportsline.c-m%2Fnhl&p=1") and later he says that GooredFix solves the problem.

There are a couple other places that recommend using this: At http://www.computerforums.org/showthread.php?p=887441, someone also describes the same thing that's happening to my computer: "The malware redirects google links to ad2.doubleclicker.net and then another website. Strangely, it only affects the first couple of links. It seems it's a variant of the "goored" or "wdmaudio" exploit, pretty nasty too."

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.ph...5&p=5400905 also is on this topic.

I didn't want to run GooredFix until asking you, since i know those instructions could be specific to those computers. Any thoughts?

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install hpHosts
Download it from here
hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,
tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites
by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.
