MBAE Premium Yearly Subscription Manual or Automatic?

Is MBAE Premium yearly subscription manual or automatic using a credit card?  I encountered the message below before making a purchase.  I prefer manual, letting myself decide before the expiration date when to renew, depending on current monthly cash flow.  Though I currently use MBAE latest beta and happy with it, my decision whether or when to upgrade is dependent on this.  If automatic, have to wait until I have a credit card that expires less than a year from now.  Too many problems with automatic billing (not MB) with other prodcuts and services in the past.

'I confirm that I am signing up for a subscription product that will be billed in regular intervals. Continued use of the purchased product is contingent upon my payment of the subscription. Details about the price and frequency of the billing were shown to me in the shopping cart above.'

Doing some Googling since my OP, found below URL post this for MBAM product, which assume also applies for MBAE, but hoping for an update to below posted in April.  I also like the manual renewal as found on renewals on other software, maganzines, etc., taking advantage of any sales, etc. just before expiration.  Like MBAM Premium, hopefully Malwarebytes will have soon have some authorized online etailers selling MBAE Premium (since it just released this week, have not found others selling it, which is somewhat to be expected).

Hello,

I have read elsewhere that the auto-renewal does also apply to PayPal. With PayPal tho, you can always cancel your auto-renewal via your PayPal account easily...

ow do I cancel a subscription?

Cancelling a subscription cancels all future scheduled payments of that subscription. A subscription can be cancelled up until the day of the next scheduled payment.

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click Profile near the top of the page.
  3. Select My money.
  4. In the My preapproved payments section, click Update.
  5. Select the merchant whose agreement you want to cancel and click Cancel.
  6. Click Cancel Profile to confirm your request..

Hi puff_m_d,

Thank you for the step by step instructions for cancelling  pre-approved payment on PayPal.  It seem as though, In my case at least, that no auto-renewal for payment of MBAE was set on my account.  Hopefully that will be the case for other users using Paypal.

BTW when I was a child the Puff the Magic Dragon song use to make me cry. :(

Hello MCFatTongue,

You are most welcome  ;)  ...

I am glad you were able to verify the status of your auto-renewal. FYI: It has been a while since I had subscription/auto-renewal purchase through PayPal, but if I remember correctly, your emails from PayPal after purchase will state it is a subscription and provide a link to cancel it.

I had to jump through hoops to cancel the auto renewal subscription for MalwareBytes, had to do it over the phone.

No simple way to look at your account on clerbridge and cancel it, PLUS the fact they now have our Cedtt Card/ Finicial information in their records which we have NO CONTROL OF, this is a very SHADY BUSINESS PRACTICE and very unsafe for some company to hold your financial info on their records without your consent.

I've delt with other software subscriptions on cleverbridge and was able to in the past cancel auto renewal and remove my financial info, but not with MalwareBytes subscription, do not believe this is legal.

Gettining ready to contact Consumer Protection/Attorney General of the State of West Virginia over this practice of no control for the customer and forcing to agree to AutoRenewal while subscribing.

I think the main problem here is a lack of an opt-out at point of sale.

Many customers don't want to be auto-enrolled into a recurring subscription. Giving us a choice to opt-out at POS would be the best thing to do.

As you pointed out you can "cancel the subscription at any time" but cleverbridge are not always the easiest people to deal with. As 'tds' pointed out he had to phone them up to cancel which is a bit of a pain.

I see what you mean and I understand but this is the provider we have and this is how they work. Also you don't need to call Cleverbridge. AFAIK you can cancel your subscription from the confirmation email you receive.

What about a point of sale opt-out then ?

Malwarebytes must have some say / control over how their own product is sold. You are the ones who decided to use cleverbridge to handle online sales on your behalf. Perhaps you need a new provider then if they cannot provide the flexibility your customers require.

I agree with @Andrew6974 and @John A and the other members posting here & in the other thread.

I applaud Malwarebytes' drive to innovate in the security software market.

And I appreciate the cost involved.

I look forward to using MBAE.

For me, however, either a lifetime license option (for a higher cost) and/or a point-of-sale opt-out from auto-renewal needs to be available.

(This is especially so for this NEW software product that still needs polishing and tweaking, regardless of its' having recently gone "gold".)

Thanks,

For what it's worth, I have been reading about "Auto-Renewal" issues on 3 other forums.

Transactions don't proceed unless auto renewal is chosen, if unticked the transaction fails.

Inability of users to find the "Unsubscibe from Auto-Renewal" information/link/page, hidden in some obscure location.

Having to chase the dog via phone support and the list goes on.

In general with any online purchase, I feel this approach appears to be a forced 'marketing hook' from my perspective.

With all due respect I do not believe this has been blown out of proportion.

A fair number of your customers have expressed a strong desire for a point-of-sale opt-out from the auto-renewal subscription - not just for MBAE but for the purchase of MBAM Premium as well.

It is an underhand marketing tactic to force everyone into auto-renewal at point-of-sale.

Simply add a checkbox at the checkout which people can 'untick' if they do not want it to auto-renew - I'm quite sure it is within the ability of cleverbridge to do so.

They handle sales on your behalf - you are the client. If they value doing business with Malwarebytes Corporation and if they are a good sales company then they should be flexible, responsive and be able to deliver tailored solutions based on their clients individual needs.

If they can't (or won't) then perhaps you should start looking for another online sales partner.

I shouldn't have to cancel after the sale, and as Wilpower and others have pointed out the process of cancelling is not as smooth / problem free as you and cleverbridge would like to have us believe...

I applaud the progress in making it a bit more transparent for customers to opt-out of auto-renewal.
Thanks very much for a good step in the right direction.

However, as others have pointed out, this is NOT the same as a one-time purchase with an immediate, point-of-sale, opt-out from auto-renewal.
And the devil is in the details.
"Cancelling a subscription" after purchase means what?
What does "clicking that link" actually accomplish?
Does the e-commerce partner retain on file the payment info/credit card information, even though supposedly there will be no future billing?
As for PayPal, while it may add a layer of transaction security, customers ought not to be compelled to use that payment method.

All of the distasteful marketing implications of auto-renewal aside, this subscription cancellation is a "straw man" for the real issues: protection of the customer's financial info, and the customer's right to control software (or any other) purchases.
As a white-hat security company, Malwarebytes ought to be sensitive to these concerns.

I do not auto-renew ANY software product.
Alas I'm not about to start now, not even for MBAE.

I would like VERY much to support Malwarebytes and the development of this innovative product.

But, as with the other users, I'll need to have EITHER a lifetime license option (for a higher cost), OR a point-of-sale opt-out option.

Thanks for listening,
