Pirated copy of Windows

Recommended Posts

Hello,

First forgive me if this topic is not allowed in this forum.

Last week my wife want to upgrade to w8.1 and she borrowed the CD from cousin and activated with the product key bought from Microsoft. But today my wife tells me that the CD borrowed is pirated and system files all are modified/hacked. Is there a way to restore the system files she doesn't want/like pirated copy of software?

SFC/DISM able to fix?

If someone had a retail version of the Win8.x OS and installed that on a system, the KeyCode used would be tied to that system.  If the disk was used with the same KeyCode, that's pirating.  If the disk is used with a new and legit KeyCode, that's not pirating.  Under the above circumstance I doubt that "system files all are modified/hacked" but may be your interpretation.

If that's the case, go to Microsoft and purchase a KeyCode and then activate Win8.x using that newly purchased KeyCode.

if the CD was/is a legitimate (aka : real) W8.1 disk from MS (with the holographic label or other similar features) and used with a purchased key , you are good to go .

as DL pointed out , it is the activation key that is unique to each computer ... not the OS (keeping in mind the right version) .

i have installed several different versions of an OS on different machines with cd/dvd i have burnt from downloaded OSes and then activated them with a purchased key .

this requires me to have a few disks on hand as opposed to ordering and waiting for a disk and key combo to arrive .

makes customers , family and friends happy too .

The only thing my wife worries is the CD which seem to be pirated.

If you are worried you can download the disk from MS directly and make your own. If you are worried about something that was added by that suspect disk you can format and reinstall with the disk you create from MS.

yeah ...

to be safe , i would download a copy of the 8.1 OS and burn it to disk ... this is about the easiest way to (re)install windows .

very soon you will be able to "upgrade" to W10 for free .

for the sake of curiosity ...

how does your wife know that the disk she borrowed from her cousin is *hacked-n-cracked* ?

I had a similar experience. Many years ago I bought a computer back then it was Windows 98 SE and I then bought Windows XP cd. The computer was properly licensed but the Windows XP cd was cracked/pirated. I then, went on to install it and it caused a major havoc out of my windows 98 SE computer (which was properly licensed) and used to get tons of pop ups and malware.

Best choice and recommendation to you from me, is that since your want to upgrade to windows 8.1 (I assume previously was Windows 7 and the computer is properly licensed). I will wait for Windows 10 to come out and buy the windows 10 cd and upgrade to Windows 10.
