General question about MBAM Premium 2.0

Recommended Posts

Hi folks! I don't know where to ask this question in the appropriate section. Hope it will help me here. I am asking this question on behalf of a user in Avast forum.

This user bought 1 license for MBAM Premium 2.0 (non-expiring and liftime) for NZ$29.95 http://store.downloadcrew.com/?act=search&brand=152

But in this following 2 links http://betanews.com/2015/06/28/arguably-the-best-anti-virus-for-windows-is-giving-pirates-a-chance-to-turn-into-legit-users-for-free/and http://venturebeat.com/2015/06/28/malwarebytes-offers-pirates-and-duped-customers-12-months-of-its-premium-antimalware-product-for-free/

It mentions that it will provide a 12 months of premium subscription for free.

I am assuming the first link is a scam? Would be appreciated for confirmation so I can pass this info to that person. Thanks. Much appreciated.

Hi:

AFAIK, most (all?) reputable online sellers have exhausted their stock of valid, 1-PC consumer lifetime licenses.

The only type of consumer license available now, either from the Malwarebytes online store or from trusted partners, would be a 3-PC subscription license.

There are many scammers out there, though.

A couple of basic principles:

As you suggested, we will need to refer this to the Malwarebytes staff for further investigation.

Thanks for reporting,

P.S. The mod team might move this post to a different area of the forum. No worries, though. ;)

Hi, SpeedyPC:

Alas, I'm neither qualified nor authorized to say whether any of those offers is or is not legit. :(

They may be fine.

I do not know.

So, please be patient until a staff member can research these sites and contact you, probably via PM.

Thanks for your understanding.

This user bought 1 license for MBAM Premium 2.0 (non-expiring and liftime) for NZ$29.95 http://store.downloadcrew.com/?act=search&brand=152

There are still a number of legitimate lifetime licenses being sold through resellers through our various retail channel and affiliate partners. So it's entirely possible to obtain a legitimate lifetime license, usually at a price around $24.95 USD (give or take).  So this downloadcrew offer could very well be completely legitimate.  And when I look at the purchase link for the site it appears to redirect to our ecommerce provider, cleverbridge, with an affiliate code so that's further evidence that it's a legitimate offer.

The offers to be leery of are the ones where the price is ridiculously low - like pennies on the dollar.  These are almost always fake and these sites are selling counterfeit keys.

The quickest way for you to tell would be to simply install the latest version of the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software, v. 2.1.8.1057 by downloading from this link.   Enter your key and activate as you normally would.  (Or, simply install over the earlier version.)  You'll be able to see your key details, including duration, on the My Account screen.  If it is a lifetime license, it will say Lifetime.

The program referred to in betanews and Venture Beat articles only applies to pirated or counterfeit keys, so legitimate keys aren't converted at all and are honored at their original terms.

Hope that helps.

G'day Becky,

Thanks for your feedback and I'll double check this when I see his laptop, however my father was using MBAM free v.2.1.8.1057 when it was automatically installed over the top of v2.1.6 before I gave him the license key so the key was activate on v.2.1.8.1057 not before. Fingers Cross on the My Account screen.  If it is a lifetime license, it will say Lifetime I'm begging for this when I see it.

G'day :)

I've checked my father laptop and it a real legitimate lifetime license as Becky said when I bought it at downloadcrew.....................PHEW! I was about to have a bloody heart attack and I would like to buy one more for my Uncle as well before it to late as I'm not 100% how many they've got left to spare and I'm not sure I should try again and buy it from downloadcrew.

I purchased directly from Malwarebytes from when they first offered the lifetime offer ... which hopefully continues to function in the future  :)  ... the original receipt was from Cleverbridge.

I needed to cover my daughter's computer, which unfortunately was taken over by a crapton of various spyware etc - becuase she "trusts" everyone!  Anyway, after completely reformatting the drive yesterday, I went looking for the lifetime license again - and as Becky said there are a bunch of shady places out there.

I did discover the downloadcrew and majorgeeks site that was seliing the lifetime license ... yes a little leary about downloadcrew, but since majorgeeks was sold out ... decided to give that a try ... $24.95 USD - for 1 lifetime licence/PC Malwarebytes Premium ... and guess what?   The receipt once again was from Cleverbridge!

I will say that once I downloaded the most recent version of Malwarebytes, I did get the screen that quesetioned whether my key/ID were legit.  I choose the "I purchased my key" and everything seems to be good to go!

That's not to say that at some point it will stop working, but I feel pretty confident that the seller was legit.

AS ALWAYS:  caveat emptor ... buyer beware / use common sense and your results may not be the same as mine  :D
