Malwarebytes Launches on the Mac With Acquisition of AdwareMedic

One of the biggest request from customers has been a version of Malwarebytes for the Mac. As of today, I'm happy to say that has officially changed with the announcement of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac!

While we firmly believe that the threat landscape for Mac is not as mature as it is for Windows, there are still significant issues around the operating system. One prime example is the evolution of adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) which Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac detects and removes extremely well.

I wanted to take a moment to introduce Thomas Reed, our new Director of Mac Offerings. We acquired Thomas' product called AdwareMedic and his blog The Safe Mac because we truly believed that his product was the best in the market. Thomas will lead us through the same battle on the Mac that we've been fighting on Windows for 7 years now. A post from him will follow mine.

For the time being, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is only a removal tool. It will scan for, and remove adware, PUPs, and various types of malware, and it will do it all for free if you're a home user. If you're a business user, just fill out a form here and we'll let you know when we have a business version.

I'm very excited to have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac join our portfolio of products and to have Thomas on the team :).

Thanks for the introduction, Marcin!

I'm very excited to be working with everyone here at Malwarebytes, and plan to help make Malwarebytes not just a force in the Windows world, but also in the Mac world now. I think we're off to a strong start with the first release of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac, and am looking forward to what we'll do next!

If you'd like to learn more about me or this new release, I've posted details in the Malwarebytes Unpacked forum.

If anyone has questions, please feel free to ask!

I'm sure there's tons of people that have been waiting for years for this! As soon as my girlfriend comeback from Québec, I'll install it on her Macbook, her sister's Macbook and both her parents Macbook. And if there's ever a paid version that comes out, you can be sure that I'll tell them to buy it :)

Congratulations to both Malwarebytes and Thomas for this, and thank you!

My download/installation of MBAM-Mac-1.0.1.7.dmg w/dtbs 4 was quick & unremarkable.

3 different scans took between 24 to 30 seconds each and no finds.

Very nice indeed.  I'm looking forward to real-time protections.

Congratulations to all! :)

Looks like you've already found some stuff to remove! (Either that or you're playing with adware samples!  :) )

jeje... Just playing with some adware samples to test the new MBAM-for-Mac  :D

Works great!

What about iOS now? :)

There's no way to create an iOS app that can scan the system or other apps, due to sandboxing restrictions. Plus, Apple has spoken very clearly by removing from the iOS App Store those anti-virus apps that did try to make weak and somewhat misleading attempts at running on iOS. That's not a market that any anti-malware vendor can tap into right now.

Thanks.

I understand iOS (9.2) is safe then?

iOS is safe, provided that you don't jailbreak it and that you never accept any offers from a website to download an app. Only use apps downloaded from the App Store.

If you ever accept the download of an app from outside the App Store, you may be infected. If so, the only method of removal on iOS is to reset your device to factory settings, without restoring from backup.

I seem to remember that one of the original plans was to create a Premium version of the Mac product (Business version?) that would give real-time protection. I think this is a critical requirement as Macs become more vulnerable to attacks. Has any progress been made, any timescale?

Thanks

That is still in the works, but it's far too early to give any kind of timeframe for a release.
