DNSAPI.dll is missing

4 yr old Qosmio laptop, Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials

On 10/31, working on a downloaded Lesson file in Dreamweaver in conjunction with the associated video, I received a notice that I needed to something like "update video" - I probably clicked the corner X.  Then MSE blasted in red, Severe threat! - I did a scan and two items were listed; I deleted them. I'm not sure of the exact sequence, but shortly, I could not open Firefox, IE, my free version of Malwarebytes or MSE.

I deleted suspicious folders and files and removed programs in the Control Panel, such as RinoReader and something like VideoCinema.  A couple of times, a rogue browser roared open.  When I click on All Programs I saw DNSproxyserver or proxybrowser at the top but didn't delete it because I don't know if it's good or bad.

Secondary concern:  I copied my huge document folder (wpd, txt, doc in that order with many graphics) from the infected laptop onto a flash drive, pasted it into my new desktop (8.1 upgraded to 10), and deleted it from the infected laptop.  Fearing this could have infected my desktop, I purchased Malwarebytes Premium, installed it, and ran a scan which showed no threats.  However, the next day I discovered that Malwarebytes Premium is not working as to real-time coverage or scheduled scans, and I don't know if this is related or not related to the laptop virus. I know it probably wasn't a smart thing to do, but a comment as to how likely it is to have cross-infected would be be appreciated.

Hereafter, I'll be briefer.

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll try to help your with your issue.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • We're primarily oriented on malware removal here, so you must know that some issues just cannot be solved and you must be prepared for this. Some tools we use here will remove your browser search history, so backup your important links and all the files whose loss is unacceptable.
  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time. Keep in mind that private life gets in the way too. Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything not covered in my instructions happens, please stop and inform me!

:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.

Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on FRST.gif icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.

(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).

  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.

I'm able to open Firefox and IE.  I can get to things like MapQuest, Bing, but it appears that anything related to sound is not working.

WCPE "Listen Now" produces ads instead of music.

Same with Youtube and Netflix - ads.

I did not click on MSE for fear of a repeat attack.

With regard to sound, I mentioned somewhere that yesterday I received a message that the sound system was off, and I thought possibly I had accidentally deleted a file or folder it needed.

When I clicked on Download Free Malwarebytes first, I got ads.

When I used the URL of the link you posted, I got to the Products page okay.

I clicked on the Free version in the list.  The usual Download arrow upper right did not appear.

Instead, across the bottom in a gold band, it says "Do you want to run or save mbam-setup 22.0.1024exe (21.8 MB) from

data.cdn.mbamupdates.com?"  Is that okay to click on?
