Windows update problems

Hello,

After running all the patches I found out that some were installed twice. (windows update.jpg)

When I check “programs and features” I see the installation only once (programs & features.jpg)

Since 2 updates failed (in the end they did not) I ran “check for updates” again and got the error

0x8007005 access denied.

Searched the net, found out it might be malware, did a malwarebytes scan, found nothing but ran also ADW cleaner, that cleaned two small entries (report attached).

I also attach the windows update log file.

Did a disc cleanup for windows updates and checked again : error 8024419 showed up.

Ran the fixit from microsoft 50123 msi

Also ran KB 890830 to be sure but nothing was found.

Don’t know if did any good but normally after the computer is started Windows automatically checks for updates. But it does not anymore, I have to do it manually.

The configuration for the updates is :

Download updates but let me choose whether to install them

checked : give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates

checked : give me updates for ms prod.&check for new optional ms software when I update windows.

Check SUR was the next one (report included)

Ran windows update diagnostic diag.cab

the first window says error 0x8007005 not fixed. In the report (pdf) it has a green checkmark.

Next I checked for updates again, it says Never checked (1st pic)

Clicked check for updates : Never installed (2nd pic)

Update history & programs and features items remain unchanged as to the updates so it seems that everything is installed.

Checked with Scancircle to be sure.

Last one is sfc /scannow found and repaired corrupt files (CBS report included)

Finally my question is : after all, don't know for sure, is everything repaired or is there still a problem with the error 8007005.

I'm confused that after the update checks it says never checked and never installed.

Thanks in advance.

Hi arleetel :)

It seems that a lot of files were repaired from the component store via SFC. This being said, SFC didn't return any file that needs to be addressed after that. I don't see a proper CheckSUR.log in the .zip archives you provided us, is it possible to run it again, and provide me the CheckSUR.log after (copy/paste it here)?

IGJdB0T.pngSystem Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan

Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;

  • Download the right version of SURT for your system;
    • Your version of Windows is: Windows 7 SP1 x64
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

Thanks for your reply.

This is so confusing, tried to solve it myself and it got more complicated since I found "different" solutions.

Here is the CheckSUR.log :

I suppose it's clean... I'm surprised but I'm not an expert at all.

This is normal. Some Windows Updates can be installed more than once on a system, because they are reissued (and therefore updated). The best example I can give is the KB3035583 which have been reissued on every Patch Tuesday. Also, if your Windows Update control panel says that Windows never checked, nor installed updates, it's because your C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder is corrupt and cannot log information properly anymore. In that case, I suggest you to rename it (to something like DS.bak) and let Windows rebuild it. Of course, it'll only start logging information starting on the new Windows Updates you'll install.

Normal... OK  but all those double updates have been installed twice the same day (according to the history), I find that strange but I do not keep

records every update session of the installed KB's, I had 2 of them failed, I uninstalled them and searched for updates and they showed up again

and I installed them again.(3121461 and 3109560) and I did not see they were already mentioned in the history.

I checked on the other computers and this did not happen, same system Windows 7 64 bit SP1.

You mean rename the folder Data Store to DS.bak, I can do that.

Right after the updates on the 13th, I ran Windows Update troubleshooter as well, which also can result in the mention update : never.

I hope that if I change the name of that file I will not loose the whole history of all updates installed.

You will loose it, yes. You will still be able to see all your Windows Updates under See installed updates however. If you rename the DataStore folder from DS.bak to DataStore, the history will comeback.

If you want, an Expert here, David, created a small script that can reset the Windows Update components for you (it does more than simply renaming the DataStore folder). Would you prefer to run it instead?

Sorry for the delay, I live in Europe.

OK, I would like that script, but what does it do exactly and as long as it does not hurt my SSD drive

which health decreased to 98 % (probably due to a system restore a month ago).

Is it possible that Boostspeed 7.9.0.0 is the reason of the problem, too much cleaning perhaps ?

Something must have caused it.

And no I never defragmented the C drive.

This script won't hurt your SSD at all, so I wouldn't worry about it :)

Also, personally I don't recommend the usage of "PC Optimizer"-like programs, since they are pretty much useless and do more harm than good.

Here's what the script does in short:

  • Stops the Windows Update service;
  • Stops the BITS service;
  • Stops the Cryptographic service;
  • Rename the Download and DataStore folders in the SoftwareDistribution folder to Download.old and DataStore.old, then deletes them;
  • Rename the catroot2 folder in system32 and delete it after;
  • Starts the Cryptographic service;
  • Starts the BITS service;
  • Starts the Windows Update service;
  • Launches a Windows Update check (to check for new updates);
Are you okay with the script deleting your Download, DataStore and catroot2 folders? Doing this won't damage your system and it's also a standard procedure Microsoft recommends to troubleshoot Windows Update issues.

Thanks for your advice on the "PC optimizer", I'll just use it to defragment the internal HD where all my software is installed.

CCleaner does the rest, by deleting temp files and cookies.

I'm OK with running the script.

You mention an SSD hard drive... if you are defragmenting this SSD drive you are putting unnecessary wear and tear on that drive, SSD drives should not be defragmented.

No problem :)

The script is easy to use. Download the .zip archive and extract it. Once done, go in the extracted folder, and drag-and-drop the Fix Windows Update.KiX file on top of the WKIX32.exe executable. This will launch the script. You can thank David for creating it :)

Hi Firefox,

I probably was not clear but I just defragment the internal HD (E)

the system is on C:\

and I never defragmented the C:\ drive.

I think I will never buy a computer with an SSD drive again, I have to install everything separately on the E drive,

the C drive is filling with all the temp files and, I do not know if I'm right but someone told me that I better

not move system files, being temps, documents etc. so I did not do that either.

I do clean all that stuff with CCleaner every day.

A month ago I did a system restore and I suppose this is "not" right for an SSD drive as well because

the health dropped to 98% (hard disk sentinel)

But I suppose that's not the topic I'm having a conversation about but I thank your for the information.

I did this, a black window with yellow text appeared with some errors like access denied but disappeared in a flash, I just hope

this is the normal procedure.

Thank you for your help.

When talking about SSD usage it is almost the same as HDD. Difference is that you must not defrag or format your SSD. If you're installing a new system, just delete existing partitions and make a new one. Don't believe what HDD Sentinel says about your SSD's health. This program should never be trusted, because it works from active Windows and it scans your drive while it is still in usage that doesn't show true information.

SSD is the best component and the best upgrade we got so far, HDD just can't keep up with SSD performance. I have it personally for more than three years and it works like the first day. HDD is history for me as a system drive, it only works as  a storage.

David just informed me that in order to run this script, UAC needs to be disabled. In that case, you should disable UAC, restart your computer, run the script again (drag-and-drop the script file on the executable in the .zip archive I attached), then once done, re-enable UAC, and restart your computer.

Here's a small guide on how to enable and disable the UAC: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/

You want to set it back to "Default" at the end.

Aura :

I think that this time it worked.

At first I got a screen displaying a red cross telling me to check for updates, I did.

Two updates showed up and I did hide them both.

the first one was kb 3006137 changes the currency symbol form Lt to € (don’t need this one)

the second is 3035583 which triggered me once with a huge file that was not really easy to get rid of and I do not want windows 10 on this computer, I have it on another one for testing.

Installed updates are still there, history disappeared.

I had a look at the services :

Windows update : started startup type : Automatic (delayed)

BITS                      started                       Automatic (delayed)

Cryptographic       started                       Automatic

I think (hope) everything will be OK from now on and Windows update will check automatically.

the catroot2 folder has some files and folders all dated today, the software distribution folders download and datastore as well.

I really appreciate your help, thank you but also David for writing this script.

Defrag : never an SSD that I knew. About installing a new system : I never heard about that and there is a big difference about doing stuff and knowing what to do and I don’t always know what and how to do things on the computer. I search first for a while and if do not find answers, well there is the forum here with really great help.

At first I downloaded Hard Disk Sentinel (free in the giveaways) because it monitors the temperature and that’s handy, it reports the health and the performance of the HD and SSD as well, I thought I could rely on that.

When you buy a computer they don’t tell you very much, I had to search for everything that needed to be configured the right way like hibernation (never) Page file : change only when really needed and Trim enabled, disable auto defrag in Windows (that last one was not even disabled by the seller).

System restore seems a bad idea either.

There are probably a lot of things I don’t know about computers.

Anyway I thank you for your comment, it’s nice to learn something.

Best regards.

Thank you for the follow-up arleetel, I'm glad that running David's script was able to help you. I'm sure he'll read this thread and be glad to know that he was able to help you with his script :) And I have the same start-up for the services you listed on my Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 laptop so you're good!
