PUM.Hijack.StartMenu - What does this do, exactly?

Recommended Posts

Hello, everyone!

About a week ago, my laptop was virused, so I reformatted it, and was worried, so I scanned my desktop computer before changing passwords on everything. Malwarebytes and AVG had found NO infections, AT ALL. Then last night, I scanned my computer with Malwarebytes after updating to the new version. It had now found something called PUM.Hijack.StartMenu. I'll post the log below:

It kind of happened out of nowhere, and this was after updating, so I was hoping that perhaps this was a false positive, or something that it had only started finding after updating. I heard that it may just be some changes that I or another program had caused, and that it might not be dangerous or a real infection at all. If this was the ONLY bad thing it had found with no real virus or malware, is it safe to assume that it was just a change that I had caused? And if that is the case, should I honestly worry at all?

Okay! Part two of my worries. I installed the new version of Adobe Reader, and that means that once again, reader_sl and adobeARM are running on startup, so I went to MSconfig to turn that off. HOWEVER, I noticed some really really odd symbols in the program lists and am now worried about that. I turned them off, and restarted the computer. Two more appeared, kind of with a circle and square symbol as the file name. I am wondering if anyone knows what the heck that can actually be.. I added two screenshots of my MSconfig window so people can see what I mean... it just has me worried. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention!

Hm, so, last night, I did a reformat of my desktop to be on the safe side. Reformatted everything cleanly and everything. But now, not even a day later, there is a bunch of Chinese writing again! This is stupid... I honestly can't tell if these are anything bad, or if they are for something I actually have on my computer... it's really getting to me..

I uploaded pics of the Chinese writing and it's path and everything from msconfig again. The PUM.Hijack.StartMenu, turns out, is just from me telling Help and Support to not show up in the Start Menu, which is fine with me, but now this Chinese writing is getting to me, because I have heard it may be on some form of keylogger, but it's IMPOSSIBLE for me to be virused again already, I JUST reformatted, completely. Unless someone is specifically targeting me with some form of hack or something that they can just keep giving me crud with, I don't know what to think... any thoughts or help are appreciated!

Okay, an update on what I've been noticing with the Chinese-character'd program in MSConfig.

It's there, so I uncheck the boxes to make it not run on startup anymore. I don't restart my computer, so I can recheck it. There are now two more programs with Chinese names there. So I uncheck them, once again, not restarting the computer. This time, the other ones that appeared after unchecking the first ones have vanished completely. I am unsure of what this is...

Sorry for all the repeated posting, but I decided I should do one more thing and finally add my HijackThis log so people can take a look over it.

Hello welcome to Malwarebytes.

=====================

The chinese language is usually a part of Acer is this an acer laptop or desktop?

The other are simply corrupted entries they can be fixed with Hijackthis under supervision.

You haven't posted any dds log or anything for anyone to see other than the mbam log.

The PUM means a potentially unwanted modification it does not mean that you are infected.

Please post a new hijackthis log please as well as a dds log.

Sorry I thought you had it already.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open as well as attach.txt.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

---------------------------------------------------

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

attach.txt

============

Also run Hijackthis and post that log so we can fix the entries.

Okay, I added the two DDS files in zip format here, to give room for the Hijackthis log. Here's that:

They are not in every acer just some.

So tell me why these entries never showed up before?

I do not know that would be an acer question.

Revo doesn't see everything if it points to a old registry entry that is not present then there is nothing to uninstall.

Malwarebytes would have no effect on those entries.

You are welcome.
