  1. I do not do system backups to my external harddrive, only the files. I am wondering, how do I erase what is on my external hard drive so that I can backup my files. The last backup didn't work so I had to backup files manually.
  2. I'm back. Lot's of manual cleaning. CCleaner picked up a lot of files too. I used CCleaner to delete Windows (and other) restore points because there were none showing up in diskcleanup. (see attached) Chrome Settings - will need to learn more about those. There was no java setting options like described so I just disabled all plugins. I am not sure what some of these plugins are. (see attached)
  3. Hi Ron, Thank you. I will do the clean up today. My computer allows me to automatically reinstall Windows. There is a partitioned drived that supports the reinstall. I have already done it a few times. My computer appears to be working fine for what I have been using it for recently. Yeh! Will read through all the linked material over the next week or so. Thanks for your help! Heidi
  4. Hi Ron, Yeh! Malwarebytes works again! Browsing is fast again. Programs I normally use are opening up fast again. What I have noticed: - VLC was very slow to open. - Sound to hear my voice through the computer microphone (Realtek) is not working. I tested my voice in Skype and it starts out normal but then my voice drops and then there is no more sound. I can hear others fine. Sound while watching videos is fine. - Computer startup is still slow. About 6 months ago I was playing around turning off Windows processes using a Geek guide. I may need to reset to default settings. This is in part why I have been thinking to reinstall Windows. It would be great to find out what I can do to make my computer run better with less running in the background. I have heard that reinstalling Windows once a year is a good idea. I am not sure what you discovered in the logs. Did I download the Java malware? I remember when tired I accidentally fell for it. Was there also an issue with Chrome? I also noticed Realtek in the logs. Some things I would like to know secure settings for: - Chrome - Windows (what processes are running that can be turned off) - since I use Chrome, do I still need to keep Internet Explorer running? I do not understand why IE temp files are created since I am using Chrome. I had some issues with scans at one point as IE was apparently running in the background. I had no clue how to turn it off. I would like to keep only the programs I use on my computer. There always seems to be things added that I have no idea whether they are essential programs or not. Like all the Live Windows and mobile apps - I do not own a cell phone and I don't use hotmail chat anymore. Bonjour service is another. Then there is Adobe - Air, Reader; Apple Mobile Device Service. Programs like this are annoying as they always seem to require updates. It might be good for me to talk to someone about some of the programs installed on my computer so I can know what to delete. And, I may need a course on computer etiquette. I move my laptop around a lot and have already had to replace the power cord once and the battery as well because the power cord wires must have split and I wouldn't always notice that the computer was running on the battery. I also tripped over my headsets more than once and first damaged the headset/mic plug sockets in my computer and then more recently completely damaged the USB socket. I'm brilliant. It's imperative to my business to have working headsets and mic. I am looking at purchasing a second laptop, probably an upgrade to what I already have as a result. I haven't reinstalled Java. I suspect some of the above can be addressed in the forums. Thanks for your help! Heidi
  5. So far things seem to be working fine. They have since a few scans back. I will see if Malwarebytes will now work!

  7. Done! Just one element with a few files that were cleaned. This was the file that popped up after the reboot: AdwCleaner[s1].txt. There was no AdwCleaner[s0].txt file. # AdwCleaner v4.201 - Logfile created 21/04/2015 at 14:34:35# Updated 08/04/2015 by Xplode# Database : 2015-04-20.1 [server]# Operating system : Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (x64)# Username : Heidi - MOBILEM00KSTER# Running from : C:\Users\Heidi\Desktop\adwcleaner_4.201.exe# Option : Cleaning ***** [ Services ] ***** ***** [ Files / Folders ] ***** ***** [ Scheduled tasks ] ***** ***** [ Shortcuts ] ***** ***** [ Registry ] ***** Key Deleted : HKCU\Software\Local AppWizard-Generated ApplicationsKey Deleted : HKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Local AppWizard-Generated Applications ***** [ Web browsers ] ***** -\\ Internet Explorer v11.0.9600.17728 -\\ Mozilla Firefox v -\\ Google Chrome v42.0.2311.90 [C:\Users\Heidi\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Web Data] - Deleted [search Provider] : hxxp://www.ask.com/web?q={searchTerms} ************************* AdwCleaner[R0].txt - [2391 bytes] - [07/04/2015 15:30:16]AdwCleaner[R1].txt - [2098 bytes] - [09/04/2015 19:47:40]AdwCleaner[R2].txt - [1315 bytes] - [21/04/2015 14:32:18]AdwCleaner[s0].txt - [2149 bytes] - [09/04/2015 19:52:35]AdwCleaner[s1].txt - [1174 bytes] - [21/04/2015 14:34:35] ########## EOF - C:\AdwCleaner\AdwCleaner[s1].txt - [1233 bytes] ##########
  8. The software was updated, and the log file produced before the restart. I ran as a normal user not as an administrator (instructions weren't clear). Thanks! Fixlog.txt
  9. That's an intimidating disclaimer! I'll be sure to back up files again. Thanks, Ron. Will do this later today.
  10. My screensaver popped up during the ComboFix can at Stage 5 then again later when it was processing the log. iObit - I didn't see it in the Control panel or CCleaner's program list nor is it showing up when I search in start. I went ahead with the ComboFIx scan anyway.
  11. I am good with following the ComboFix instructions but the Windows Recovery Environment instructions are completely intimidating. I do not have a printer to print out all the instructions. Is there any way I can make sure I already have the Windows Recovery Environment installed? Wouldn't it be easier for me to just reinstall Windows? My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742-7789 and the drives are partitioned. I backed up Windows on CDs but I believe I have to be connected to their website to do reinstalls. I can't remember. Another solution would be to borrow someone else's laptop to show all of the instructions.
  12. FYI Since I did run iObit and some changes were made, I thought I would share the results. 2 threats and 18 outdated device drivers (some of which updated). IObit Malware Fighter Report.log
  13. Checking in. I have been away for a few days. Will be doing the above today and tomorrow. Thank you!
  14. The Remove Jave is not starting. I get a message saying that IE is open when it is not. I rebooted. Still getting same message. I don't know how to quit IE from running. I've attached the error report. By the way, I am not clear as to why I have Mozilla Firefox on my computer. I use Chrome. JavaRa.log
