  1. Hmm, yeah that would work. I can't seem to get into command prompt anymore though. I think this malware has gone even further than it had when I first began on this forum. Now it tries to load windows and gets to the "welcome" screen with the dell logo and the windows 7 logo but then it goes blue screen and reboots. This thing is not very consistent though. Sometimes it lets me get further into the system. As we speak, I am faced with the welcome screen and I can actually move the pointer and there's a user available called "dell" (which i think it the admn account) but when I click it it tries to open command prompt, it goes to a black screen and then it goes back to the welcome screen after flashing once or twice. I just don't know what to do with this stupid computer!
  2. OK, nope nevermind. That missing .dll file screen seems to have been caused by the external harddrive I plugged in. I removed it and then it tried to start again. this time going to a blue screen, and then rebooting to the same error screen. still haven't gotten anywhere.
  3. Hmm, I don't have the Dell Backup & Recovery option in that list of recovery tools. I have startup repair, system restore, system recovery image, windows memory diags, command prompt. I chose system restore, but for some reason there is only one restore point even though I have had this computer for over two years. This restore point was made immediately after I downloaded Reaper, but before most of my problems...maybe it will work? I'm trying it right now. I am worried that maybe there isn't a recovery partition here since there are no Dell options in the list. I tried changing the boot order last night so that it started with the CD/DVD drive, and it does boot from the CD but maybe the CD doesn't have the right stuff because it doesn't load up anything. It just says "press any key to boot from cd or dvd" and then it does a "windows is loading files" screen and then it just goes blank and then reboots. OK, the system restore just finished -- but now it says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root\system32\hal.dll, Please re-install a copy of the above file." Is that something that can be done?
  4. I've tried to do these steps, but Windows can't even get into its own command prompt anymore. When I press F8 it has the option there for "repair computer" but when I click it it automatically goes back to the screen that says "windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause" and then it says "launch startup repair" and "start windows normally" (launching windows repair does nothing but reboots and then goes back to that same screen) I plugged the flash drive into the computer with the FRST.exe on there and it said that a hal.dll file is missing and windows can't start. Does that help at all? I just bought this second laptop to try and use in the meantime and it came with a windows 7 professional x64 disc, but that will not load either. Is there any way to completely wipe this OS and start over? Thanks!
  5. Hi. Yesterday I downloaded Reaper, which is a free home recording program that I have used successfully in the past but in order to get my microphone working I had to download a patch thing for the Blue Snowball so that it would work and once I downloaded that ASIO patch my computer started acting really weird. My adblock on chrome crashed and wouldn't let me repair it so I ended up uninstalling chrome and reinstalling; however, I think I clicked on a malicious ad instead of the chrome website because it wasn't an official google installer. I suddenly had like 10 different adware things on my computer like "super optimizer" and "web hub" and "tabletop games" and " bubble sound", etc. I used housecall from trendmicro as well as running a diag with ccleaner and the windows defender/firewall diags and then last night it appeared that I had it taken care of. No threats were being found by those programs so I went to bed. Now I get up and there was something called "ninja loader" or something installed on the computer and another thing that I can't quite remember and so I attempted to uninstall them and that's when my computer crashed. Now I can't get it to even boot up in safe mode. When I turn it on it immediately gives me two options: "start system repair" and "start windows normally". If I do the system repair it runs a short diagnostic that ends up with a blue screen and a Dell error message of 2000-123. Before it gives me that it asks if I want to do a system restore. If I click yes, it runs for an extra minute before going to the blue screen. If I click no, it immediately gives me the blue screen. If I say "start windows normally" it immediately goes to the blue screen. I can click F12 and get into the BIOS. I disabled my wireless and tried to run a diagnostic through the BIOS and then I get into this weird screen where it's making this sing-song beeping noise and telling me that the memory tests are failing. There are tons of weird errors with all different names and numbers and stuff. I don't know what I should do. Please help me.
