No, it's not due to malware.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Hi - I started OTL scan about an hour ago - the only sign that's it's working is an hour glass on the screen - it doesn't show it scanning through the files like other scans - is it working or is it just hung up?

Regular.

Hello again -

I've read the instructions at the bleepingcomputer website but have not done the SFC.EXE scan yet -this is WAY above my comfort level. I also have an application on my computer that I've paid a license fee to use (for my job) - If I should have to do a system restore I don't know how that wil affect my licensed application. I'm must check with them first before proceeding any further.

It's not a system restore. This will just verify that all files are legitimate and if there is anything missing or modified, it will be replaced with the original file.

Hello - I ran SFC.EXE - I was not requested to run my Windows XP installation CD - here is a fresh DDS log and I've attached the attach.zip file.

Forgot to mention one more thing - I ran mbam yesterday. Here is the log - there was one infected windows/system32 file.

To where redirects you?

Usually to like another type of search page listing various websites to click on for the particular subject you're searching for. For example just now I did a google search on malwarebytes anti-malware. Google brought up all the various website options for me to click on. I clicked on what should have taken me to www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. instead I was redirected to an almost blank Google page with a search box and two buttons to click on - one says "Google Search" and the other says "I'm Feeling Lucky". I'm pretty baffled by this. Any ideas?

I'm not sure I'll be able to try this step - I don't have ready access to another computer.
