  1. Okay, I added the two DDS files in zip format here, to give room for the Hijackthis log. Here's that: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4 Scan saved at 1:01:51 AM, on 15/12/2010 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG10\avgchsvx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\vVX1000.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Keyboard\Ikeymain.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgtray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgwdsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam\MSCamSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\Identity Protection\Agent\Bin\AVGIDSAgent.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\Identity Protection\agent\bin\avgidsmonitor.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgnsx.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgemcx.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG10\avgrsx.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgcsrvx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Desktop\HijackThis.exe R1 - 2. Oh. Yeah, I am on an Acer Desktop. It only worried me because I don't recall seeing them prior to this time. DDS Logs? Where do I go to start going about that.
  3. Not sure. Guess nobody really knows what the deal is with it. I've posted in a few other forums, and have done many scans and posted my logs and stuff, and so far, nobody seems to have found anything bad. I am very perplexed.
  4. So it's not just me then. That same error came up the first time I turned them off and restarted.
  5. Sorry for all the repeated posting, but I decided I should do one more thing and finally add my HijackThis log so people can take a look over it. 6. Okay, an update on what I've been noticing with the Chinese-character'd program in MSConfig. It's there, so I uncheck the boxes to make it not run on startup anymore. I don't restart my computer, so I can recheck it. There are now two more programs with Chinese names there. So I uncheck them, once again, not restarting the computer. This time, the other ones that appeared after unchecking the first ones have vanished completely. I am unsure of what this is...
  7. Hm, so, last night, I did a reformat of my desktop to be on the safe side. Reformatted everything cleanly and everything. But now, not even a day later, there is a bunch of Chinese writing again! This is stupid... I honestly can't tell if these are anything bad, or if they are for something I actually have on my computer... it's really getting to me.. I uploaded pics of the Chinese writing and it's path and everything from msconfig again. The PUM.Hijack.StartMenu, turns out, is just from me telling Help and Support to not show up in the Start Menu, which is fine with me, but now this Chinese writing is getting to me, because I have heard it may be on some form of keylogger, but it's IMPOSSIBLE for me to be virused again already, I JUST reformatted, completely. Unless someone is specifically targeting me with some form of hack or something that they can just keep giving me crud with, I don't know what to think... any thoughts or help are appreciated!
  8. Hello, everyone! About a week ago, my laptop was virused, so I reformatted it, and was worried, so I scanned my desktop computer before changing passwords on everything. Malwarebytes and AVG had found NO infections, AT ALL. Then last night, I scanned my computer with Malwarebytes after updating to the new version. It had now found something called PUM.Hijack.StartMenu. I'll post the log below: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.50 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 5247 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11 04/12/2010 11:06:56 PM mbam-log-2010-12-04 (23-06-56).txt Scan type: Full scan (C:\|D:\|) Objects scanned: 248018 Time elapsed: 1 hour(s), 5 minute(s), 23 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 1 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_ShowHelp (PUM.Hijack.StartMenu) -> Bad: (0) Good: (1) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected) It kind of happened out of nowhere, and this was after updating, so I was hoping that perhaps this was a false positive, or something that it had only started finding after updating. I heard that it may just be some changes that I or another program had caused, and that it might not be dangerous or a real infection at all. If this was the ONLY bad thing it had found with no real virus or malware, is it safe to assume that it was just a change that I had caused? And if that is the case, should I honestly worry at all? Okay! Part two of my worries. I installed the new version of Adobe Reader, and that means that once again, reader_sl and adobeARM are running on startup, so I went to MSconfig to turn that off. HOWEVER, I noticed some really really odd symbols in the program lists and am now worried about that. I turned them off, and restarted the computer. Two more appeared, kind of with a circle and square symbol as the file name. I am wondering if anyone knows what the heck that can actually be.. I added two screenshots of my MSconfig window so people can see what I mean... it just has me worried. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention!
  9. Ah. Well, my laptop is already completely wiped, so that's okay, I'm fine in regards to it being cleaned. I was just curious on what these said infections actually do is all, that's about it. Was just curious what it was in their nature to do really. Thanks for your help anyway though.
  10. ... I dunno why I keep typo'ing that. Sorry, DWM. ... I even turned it into DNW before... Anyway, sorry, I really should have put that in the proper title of this topic... meant to note the virus part.
  11. Er, no, I looked into it. I knew that NORMALLY those are files that are a part of Windows. However, DNW is a part of either Vista, or Windows 7, neither of which I have. Shell.exe running under my username doesn't seem right, nor does the SVCHOST.exe running under my user name either. (I had looked up this problem when it occurred.) These are viruses that are named the same as very valid windows programs, but are actually just posing as them. They change the person's internet into a proxy, and in many cases reappear. I was just curious if anyone knew anything about the viruses that pose as these files. I know that normally they are very valid files, however. (I have MANY cases of SVCHost running on my desktop, but none under my username, and no shell or DWM)
  12. Hello everyone! I had unfortunately run aground of these malware the other day on my laptop, much to my chagrin, considering how paranoid I am about the safety of my computers... Anyway, I was kind of curious about what the DMW.exe, SVCHOST.exe, and Shell.exe malware trio actually DO. Mostly because the only noticeable thing I could tell that they did was change peoples' internet proxies (and general internet settings) to a different one to shut it off. I was curious if that was all that these 3 did. Supposedly they are rootkits or something of the like, but I am still kind of curious as to whether or not someone can tell me what they do in the way of like... password stealing or anything like that. I had a sort of thought that they might be keyloggers, but then it occurred to me that they shut off internet use, and therefore people couldn't even get to the sites they use to put in their passwords anyway, so I put that thought aside. Anyway, I reformatted my laptop, because I felt it needed it despite the fact that it seemed I had cleaned my system, so cleaning it now is no longer my goal. I'm just searching for information to sate my curiosity. Anything anyone can tell me is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time and attention! (Also, forgive me if this isn't the right board for this, I tried checking other boards and this seemed the most appropriate for some reason)
