  1. I reinstalled windows and everything seems to be working fine. May I use this thread to ask what you think the best (free) antivirus and spyware software I should install on my computer to protect and maintain the system. I've already downloaded MBAM but would like to be prepared.
  2. Understood. How do I get one? who do i contact? HP? Windows?
  3. I couldn't get this Vista CD to work. When it came to the list of boot devices I had two different ones. I tried each one different times and neither booted up with vista upgrade. It only started windows normally. What should I do?
  4. I don't have any CD. I've moved twice in the past and i'm guessing the CD has been misplaced. I do have 2 CDs that are supposed to upgrade my system to Vista, but I never used them because I was happy with XP. The disc says that it is a new installation and any personal files or programs will be overwritten as a result of the upgrade.....do you think this may help? If not where do I get a CD?
  5. Looks like i'm in trouble. I thought I had the XP disc that came with my computer but now I can't seem to find it. The one I thought was the disc turned out to be just for an HP printer and not my computer. I don't know what to do now. Can I make a CD from a computer? Can I Not re-install windows now? I feel like an idiot. I have all the paperwork and other stuff but not the actual disc....this is making me crazy. Help
  6. Lol thanks. I'm completely fine with formatting and reinstalling. I had planned on doing it for a while but now I have a reason to. I've saved my files that I want to keep and will be trying to follow those directions to fix the computer. I'll post (from another computer) if I have any problems
  7. I did the first part of your last post......now I'm running DDS and it's not really doing anything. It says it should take about 3 minutes to complete and then a logfile will popup but it's been about 20 and i'm not seeing any change. What should I do?
  8. I will try this when I get home but have a quick question. When you say "lost cause" do you mean my computer will not work again ever? Or that we will just have to reinstall and reformat Windows? If it's just reformatting and reinstalling then I'm fine with that and ready to go......but if it's really a problem and my computer won't work at all.....I should probably seek more help or something right?
  9. Trying to do it in safe mode and it's now stuck on the same spot. The "Rebooting Windows...please wait". I'm also worried that it won't change my clock settings back to the normal time if it can't finish with this process. I'm willing to just reboot the whole system so if this combofix isn't a necessity then I'm willing to forgo it.......but if it's necessary - what should I do next? It's been on the Rebooting phase for a while now.
  10. Combofix seems like it's done scanning but has has the text "Rebooting Windows...Please Wait" on the screen for the last like 20 minutes.....i'm not exactly sure what to do. Should I wait? or try to manually reboot the computer? I'm posting this on a separate computer from the one that is being scanned
  11. My fault.....I'll do that and then post it here. Sorry...wasn't sure if I was supposed to do something else.....but i'll try it now. Thanks
  12. Alright.....I tried that site but it wasn't really worth uploading all my files one by one.....my computer is being slow enough as it is. I was able to save the very important files that I wanted on DVD-R's so I'm ready to move forward. What is the first step I should take to fix my computer?
  13. Cool.....i'm going to look into that skydrive site. That would possibly help. I'll respond when I've got my files backed up and to find out the steps I need to do next. Thank you
  14. Ok.....so I tried backing some files up using DVD+RWs. When I put the disc in another computer nothing was there. Then I read something that you should use DVD-R or DVD-RW to store files.....is this true? What is the best way I can save a few GBs of files? Also after trying to save them, there was an issue where my wallpaper disappeared and said something about being infected and i'm getting popups - I think the Antivirus2009 spyware or whatever it's called is now on my computer. I'm posting this from a different computer, and would like to know if there's a way to save my computer? I don't mind reinstalling my system - I just want to be able to save a few photos/videos to DVD Data discs. If I reinstall would that fix my computer or is it going to be screwed completely? Let me know what to do next. I'm awaiting a response . Thanks
  15. At this point i'm not too worried about losing my stuff . It sucks but I'll deal with it because I let this happen to my computer. I will begin making copies of the stuff I want to keep.....and report back here when I'm ready to move on. Might be this weekend. I appreciate the help and I don't expect miracles. Anything you can do is great, thank you for the assistance.
