Is Malwarebytes' right for me?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right sub-forum to post this in but I have a pretty nasty virus on my computer. I have AVG free on my computer but apparently that didn't work because it allowed a virus to get through on my PC. What it's doing is acting as an anti-virus software called Antivirus-1 (I think) and keeps on giving me pop-ups saying I need to pay $80 to remove this virus on my computer (which is obviously a fraud). I'm also getting this windows error message:

Anyway, a friend recommended this program to me, but I was just wondering if this will infact get rid of this virus or if I will just have to completely reformat my computer. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Last sentence isn't very clear, my friend recommended Malwarebytes to me, I'm wondering if this is the appropriate program to get.

The great thing about MBAM is that it offers a FREE fully functioning detection and removal engine :)

With that you have nothing to lose by trying out MBAM versus your fake alert infection but certainly a reformat and reinstall is not called for to cure this!

The only time MBAM will cost if if you choose to purchase its realtime protection component.

That is of course optional and not mandatory :(

Ok cool thank you! Is it just the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Free Download then that I'm looking for?

Hi,

All downloads of MBAM lead to the free version as it has the payfor components also in the install but just locked out by default until purchased registration code is entered.

Just install update and run a quick scan. Let MBAM remove what it detects and reboot all for free :(

No problem,

I know that at the moment i had just sent of firing solution for the most recent AntiVirus1 rogue variant earliar to HQ for updating our main DB.

If you have one of the older variants then we will RIP it and if it is the new one then you will have to wait for next DB update for MBAM to rip it but the update should be in the next 12 hrs :(

Everything seems good! Looks like it successfully deleted all the files and my computer is clean! I might just have to buy the full version now!

Great:D

Well purchase is optional as i said we provide a fully functioning detection and cleaning engine for FREE

Probaly our selling pitch is that our realtime protection module can prevent in realtime what the engine rips of the infected PC so we are always a good purchase to compliment any AV in protecting someone's PC from getting infected in the first place :(

Just an interesting bit of info, but that 'windows error message' is probably just a screensaver that the rouge software installed and locked. It's designed to look like a windows error so that you trust it.

Also, keep in mind that even with the paid version of MBAM you WILL need a seperate antivirus installed... they are designed to work together, and MBAM isn't designed as an antivirus. Instead it will try to kill the malware that a virus scanner generally misses.
