Please read: Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm It works with all browsers. See this review https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3145/reviews Firefox add-ons are much more complicated to maintain and some conflict with each other.

Not many people know the difference between baud and bps. With quadrature modulation you can send many more bits on a baud. http://sattlers.org/mickey/tech/help/baud-v-bps.html I worked with enginers that developed the 56K bps modem for IBM in Raleigh N.C. and Bill Gates got a hissy fit at that time with IBM for OS/2 so he decided to develop Windows further and as the saying goes The rest is history. Who would have thought you can get 6MB on twisted, copper pairs with DSL. -
I think that the Gutmann 35-pass method is overkill and only needed if you want to get rid of the hard drive. I agree with CWB to shut down all open programs especially the browser. I usually only use CCleaner before I shut down the system.

I feel your pain. I had to use OS/2 Warp Communication Manager to set up those 300baud modems. This will be familliar: The Sound of dial-up Internet -
I don't use Firefox but I do use IE8 and I do not know why Finjan has not updated for the latest Firefox. Whatever security browser extension you choose is a matter of preference but I do know that Finjan Secure Browsing works well on both IE8 and IE9. For some reason I have an aversion to anything from Norton(Symantec).

Plus it only takes 5 minutes to pack and not 5 days to make up my mind what I want to take.

It sure supports Windows 7 with IE9. I have not tried Browser Defender but I'll give it a try. Added: It really slowed down my IE8 on my XP Pro system so I removed it.

Neither. I have used both and found that McAfee SiteAdvisor is not well maintained and even rates sites with known malware as safe. WOT is driven by user biases and knowledge. I prefer Finjan SecureBrowsing from M86 Security Labs http://www.m86security.com/labs

Does it come with memory upgrades that enable it to instantly recall every conversation you have that will help you stay out of the doghouse?
