Nuclear Weapons on a Highway Near You

Big rigs with bombs are secretly cruising America's interstates. But how safe are they from terrorists or accidents?

Nuclear trucking routes in the US - (Graphic by Jeff Berlin)

"Is that it?" My wife leans forward in the passenger seat of our sensible hatchback and points ahead to an 18-wheeler that's hauling ass toward us on a low-country stretch of South Carolina's Highway 125. We've been heading west from I-95 toward the Savannah River Site nuclear facility on the Georgia-South Carolina border, in search of nuke truckers. At first the mysterious big rig resembles a commercial gas tanker, but the cab is pristine-looking and there's a simple blue-on-white license plate: US GOVERNMENT. It blows by too quickly to determine whether it's part of the little-known US fleet tasked with transporting some of the most sensitive cargo in existence.

As you weave through interstate traffic, you're unlikely to notice another plain-looking Peterbilt tractor-trailer rolling along in the right-hand lane. The government plates and array of antennas jutting from the cab's roof would hardly register. You'd have no idea that inside the cab an armed federal agent operates a host of electronic countermeasures to keep outsiders from accessing his heavily armored cargo: a nuclear warhead with enough destructive power to level downtown San Francisco.

Well that is an unplesant thought. Especially if you listen to these quotes...

Moreover, in recent years the OST's nuke truckers have had a spotty track record—including spills, problems with drinking on the job, weapons violations, and even criminal activity.

and

a bomb or rocket attack on a truck, DOE had projected, could kill 18,000 people and cost $10 billion to clean up. Such concerns led some activists to dub nuke truckers "the axles of evil."

With that in mind, I would think that they would have an escort at the least.. but I guess they are not a target. But I am sure it wouldn't take much to become one.

This has been going on for some time and its really not new (at least to me). Also if you have escorts during the move, it just advertises even more and then you know that its something important. Its better to be more as business as usual so that they do not stand out like a sore thumb...

DISCOVERY CHANNEL, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and CNBCNews have run specials on these haulers of nuclear materials and it was mention more than once that while trailers are nondescript and blend in well, the trucks ALSO have GPS locater beacons, military-grade radios, panic buttons and armed drivers as well as inconspicuous escort vehicles so I would doubt any terrorist could mount a successful attack..

I forgot; 60 MINUTES also got into the act. ;)

YEAH, saw some of those, pretty good but i saw the cuban missile crisis live and this is nothing compared to that. kinda redundant information. people know about this but its on the back burner with all the daily life problems everyone has. i mean if it happens im prepared wrote my social on my arm. if its still there after blastwave and heat wave lol

The real crisis is all the billions of US $$ we spent preparing the Utah mountain underground storage facilities for nuclear waste from all the nuclear power plants, currently being stored in large pools of water on-site to keep the fuel rods cool, and congress, listening to their constituents for once, all are yammering "No nuclear spent fuel rods traveling through my town" on the way from power plants to the storage facility...

Spent fuel rods still on-site at the power plants, 100%; amount of spent fuel transported to that mountain storage in Utah, 0%..

Trucks mentioned in original article are transporting nuclear warheads for decommissioning at the only two places in the US authorized to do so; The Pantex Plant in Texas and the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee.

Idiots..

the end is near..... run for your lives....... supermarket has B.O.G.O on canned beans...time to stock up and pass out from the methane inside bomb shelter. hey if i cannot rent my rental property they can use it as a depository for nuke waste hahahaha but really more important stuff to worry about then this . this is uncontrollable and they will do it anyway so why worry about this. ;)

What? No little dots in Indiana? I thought Purdue University had a reactor for research purposes?

Edit: I was right, there is a live nuclear reactor at Purdue University, and it has been active since 1962. It is capable of producing 10kW of power, however they only use it to generate 1kW of power, which cannot provide power to more than a few devices at a time.
